Thanks for posting a close-up of the caveman's face. When I looked at the full-sized image, I assumed all of the features of the face (particularly the bridge of the nose and the cheek) were blurred together. Looking at it now I can see the highlights standing out much more clearly. :)

B u r l
October 6th, 2009, 08:44 AM
teowil; thanks. yeah i was worried the face didnt read well. gonna do some more concepts of that guy i think and try and clear it up.

15 hours drawing today and now i'm waiting around for the chiu stream but i am so worn out dsgfsgfdgsdg

Teowli
October 7th, 2009, 09:02 PM
The way you color really makes his garb look fluffy. The lighting on the upper torso is really nice, too. But his lower half looks a little too dark to me. Is the light source pointing upward, or downward?

Sorry if they're lame critiques. I'm just now getting into critiquing again so I'm kind of learning as I go. If what I'm saying isn't hitting right or doesn't make sense please tell me. xD I won't mind.

Bendragon
October 7th, 2009, 09:19 PM
Nice work man! I guess you could apply the same render though out the piece, I think that will be great. And maybe some more dramatic lighting (or more intensity in there).
Whooooo! Another guy following the Chiu stream! Theyre amazing!!!!!!! <3 But alas I'll need to be up at 5am to catch them live :(

Ricardo Robles
October 8th, 2009, 10:02 AM
Cool characters, nice expressions.
I like your use of color but I think it needs more contrast sometimes.
cheers

B u r l
October 8th, 2009, 11:35 AM
teowli; cheers man. i know what you mean about the dark legs, but i was aiming to have the upper part stand out and have the rest receding kinda into the background. could still use more work though! the light source is supposed to be upper left

bendragon; thanks! yes the chiu stream is awesome. but being in england sucks! i missed it live last night. i made it to 3am but i was so tired and worn out it felt like i wouldn't get much out of it, so i went to bed. but at least they're recorded.

ricardo, thank you. yeah, man, i'm really weak with colour. it's something i need to focus more on!

trying out a new buildup approach i read from this blog - http://adamscreation.blogspot.com/2009/08/its-depressing-being-second-tier-street.html

seems to make a huge difference. looking forward to playing around with it more because i messed a few things in this experiment. feels quite flat at the moment

I'm working on a piece with a bunch of knights having a round of intense Jenga. Still getting an idea of the values first before getting jiggy with colour.

Composition is based roughly on Rembrandt's The Feast of Belshazzar (http://www.shafe.co.uk/crystal/images/lshafe/Rembrandt_van_Rijn_The_Feast_of_Belshazzar_c1635.j pg)

Hey dumpling - I've been hanging round this site for a while now, but just had to register so I could tell you that I just love the Santa Sack - made my day I really admire great cartoons for the painting skill as well as the humor - don't know how you think of them.

Excellent style and i really like your self portrait. Also i was looking at your Christmas piece and chuckled as you do at a ball sac but if an old man came along with his meat and two veg hanging out i wouldn't laugh.. i'd run or possibly cry or maybe even a run and cry combo.

jordyskateboardy
December 30th, 2009, 05:32 PM
Haha santa's sack was really funny. Loved it. You could have improved the pic by adding a good shadow on the balls and only leabing it lit on the sides. Would have increased the depth.
Anyway love your style. It's really funny and original. Enjoyable to look at.

@Pigeonkill: haha :P. cheers
@Jameshughes4789:haha thanks. it seems santa's sack was a little controversial.
@jordyskateboardy. thankyou! i agree, the depth isn't too great on it :)

Just a quick concept sketch for today. I also set up a portfolio website which I hope will help in getting some commissions.

I love the characters. Your humor is excellent, especially in the knight Jenga piece. Great!

I recognized from the first couple of posts a Chiu influence. These last two seem to have a distinct Silver influence as well.

Ivan: thanks man!

clifFroth: thanks! yeah the first ones where inspired by Chiu when i was watching his stream. what's Silvers first name? them 2 where inspired after i viewed the blog of Ben Reynolds (http://reynoldsben.blogspot.com/) :)

Current CHOW - Sergeant Dan and the terrible torture twin.

Still a long way to go. I want it to have an air of style of the old pulp comics but still keep it contemporary... :3

Update on the sketch. The idea: One of my old art teachers has a thing going on facebook where people submit artworks containing a certain bear, with artistic reference behind it. I decided to draw the bear on a plane with a few known artists, with some references drawn in to each artist. Most are obvious but for fun I want to include a lot more subtle references or connections.

Im liking the style of this sketchbook, even though its relatively small at the moment there is a clear theme coming through. Good character development and a strong cartoonish style, which is always good. No crits from me, just bring on more characters like captain clank, and a personal favourite of mine the girl riding the crocodile!
