Following Steve Kim's example of Art Center thread, I;ve decided to make one for SCAD

My experience:
I am a recently transferred student at SCAD studying for BA in game design

General info:
There are 4 cities where scad is located: Savannah GA, Atlanta GA, Hong Kong China, and Lacoste France. Savannah is the central hub where the most courses and resources are available. There is also e learning.

Scad runs on a quarterly system Fall, Winter, Spring and optional summer

Application deadline is normally around March, but it is still possible to be accepted after the deadline. (I've applies 2 weeks after and was accepted)

Scad is NOT cheap. Each quarter costs me around $9000 in tuition plus 4.5k in housing to around 13.5k each quarter.

Fortunately scad gives Scholarship of 3k each year if you maintain 3.0 gpa and 6k one time for good portfolio(they practically give it out if you submit one provided its not complete crap)

Housing is provided, you can also live off campus for a reduction of 30% on your scholar ship you've received from scad.

Tours are given daily 2 times.

Its possible to work while you're going to school, but its recommended to wait one quarter to get a good understating of the workloads. It can be substantial if you wait until the last minute to do things.

Scad offers a ton of majors, but with variety comes less centralized knowledge finding the right professor for your classes or you're interest of study is a bit challenging.

BFA requires around 65 hours of gen ed. BA around 90 hours, both require 180 hours to graduate. At the end of the day, it really depends on how much more time you personally want to study. I went for a BA instead of of BFA because more of my gen ed transfered, less time relearning foundation and less studio time(which is most of the advanced courses are anyways).

Savannah is a very beautiful city, I get lost of inspiration just walking around. Also there are horses!

Savannah is a pretty safe city EXCEPT for certain districts. Its best not to explore too much at night time if you don't know where its save and where its not.
-------------------------------------------
Now come the stuff that they don't tell you about:

Make sure you know what you're teacher is like BEFORE attending a class. Since im a transfer student, I was pretty much f*&#ed for the first quarter cus my course evaluator selected the classes for me. Although my art history professor is really awesome. Can't say the same about my drawing 2 professor though.

Ask people about classes especially those who have taken it before you on the content of what they've learned as well as the professor. It is critical that you do not get F*&%ed in the @$$ for having a bad class where the professor was an architecture major and was forced to teach renaissance art, or drawing classes that have only a single still life set for a class of 20 and the professor is more into experimentation of the medium rather than refinement of your current skills and he does not give good feedback on your stuff unless you bug the living crap out of him(do it because you've paid him to teach!).

If you ever get a chance to go to an open model studio, DO IT! Its practically open all and every Friday and will help you improve your life drawing.

There are certain building like Walin Hall there is a stash of casts in the basement closet can be borrowed(3 weeks at most) It really helpful to take one, find an empty class room with a direction light and spend a few hours drawing it to really understand how the light casts on the human body.

The library is you're friend. There is a tone of really good books on practically every subject imaginable, and up-to-date computers where you can research, and print stuff out.

Never buy art material all at once unless you know its the cheapest deal possible with the highest quality and you will use it the the fullest for ALL of your projects. Make sure you know all of you're projects and how much it will cost you on the first day of class.

If are going to spend 20$ on a pad of watercolor paper pf 12 sheets when all you need is 4 sheets for experimentation why not get 3 people to chip in and and save some money. Likewise Why spend 50$ on really expensive Gouache paint for just one assignment when you can buy it online for cheaper. I spent 35$ on my stuff which I will end up giving it to my roommate when i'm done since I will never use it again(i work mostly digital and I don't have any other painting class).

------------------------------
I'll continue to add info once i've got more free time. I'll try to find people on CA that went to scad and make a list. Feel free to contribute. If there is something that is not address here that you want to know about SCAD. Feel free to pm me.

I think we need to make this a thread for SCAD people to just talk about SCAD; I'm hoping to attend, and knowing some peeps who have the same goals as me and are fellow ConceptArtians would be good before going there next year, if I do end up accepted and get enough scholarships.
