I really like the shading in the right-central face of this image. (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=795022&stc=1&d=1254699288) Really, I like the way you shade all of them, but that one captures my attention more than the others. I think it's the angle of the body: bent forward, looking up at you, casting a shadow over the face and chest. What is that contraption around his neck? I can't tell if it's nuts and bolts, or some sort of liquid vials.
Also, what kind of pencils did you use for these? I stick to the .5 lead mechanical pencils because I'm lazy, but seeing these broad strokes makes me want to try them. :)

October 5th, 2009, 08:28 PM
I love the top two of this last update! The crosshatching is magnificent!
I also really like the thumbnail in the first post; it looks like an old master pen and ink study or something.
Great work man.

October 6th, 2009, 07:04 PM
Teowli thanks man, i don`t know whats around hes neck eather ;) i wont go any further with this concept.. so whoe cares.. yes I use a .5 or 0.7 lead mechanical pencil
drd thx!
..here some crappy selfportraits from the last few days, another sheet of COW and some hands as usual. my flat made gave me an anatomy book from Gottfried Brammes so I did a few studdies from there and afterwards some hands from imagination.

Damn, that is a sexy costume. XD I'm guessing you used a lot of references for it? If so, would you mind sharing the sites where you found such awesome period clothes?

October 20th, 2009, 11:17 AM
Cacodaemonia : thanks again but I have to disapoint you I didn`t use any refs for this piece :) I went with a certain feeling and mood and tweaked the costume until it felt right.

Lots of great sketches! I like the dude on the left page here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=814718&stc=1&d=1256817227), with his hand raised up into that sigil/design.
That Toppi study is gorgeous, though I admit I've never seen the original work.
master.mind
November 2nd, 2009, 05:58 PM
Cacodaemonia thanks
Sergio Toppi is definitely worth a look. But i don`t like everything he draws, sometimes he`s too ornamental for me, but his value design is awesome.
here some pages.. I have to gear up!! drastically!! :yayca:

Really like the face studies here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=818913&stc=1&d=1257206214). :) For your figure sketches, maybe try focusing less on outlining, and describe more of the interior of the figure? Like, folds, muscles, shadows, etc.

Thanks for the advice, but I`m drawing these little studdies from
posemaniacs.com and because there are just those scrappy models I don`t want to draw some wrong shapes. But for the overall gestures they work
fine. I`ll probably attend a life drawing class on january so....

A very neat little sb you have here, sir! It is very interesting to to see the very quick improvement of your line quality and the great progress in figure from all the hard work you've put in. What I would love to see would be some costume designs and mebbe some people interacting with one another.
...But what do I know... :P Keep up the great work! :sungod:

The can and oil paintings are both very different from your sketching style: more tentitive and layered. I realize that this is probably because you're fairly new with both mediums, but I think slapping on the analogue and digital paint a bit more thickly would work well. It can get muddy if you overwork either too much. Working big to small and all that good stuff. :) Anyway, if the glob doesn't work, you can control-z, wipe it off, or know better next time!
...and I agree with Holland: I like interesting sketches. :D

Really cool looking SB! I like your ink wash a lot. How much does your Sketchbook paper weigh (the thickness), btw?

You are magic with ink my friend! Still probably my favorite sketchbook - and surprisingly you haven't followed suite and joined the droves of button-pushing digital artists on this site.
Just a quick question on your process - do you generally complete an entire sketch and then come in over the top with your wash, or is it all (sketch, hatching, wash) done simultaneously?

Last week I did some chatroulette portraits. I`ts fun but very difficult. You are very short of time and each mark you`re making has to be interesting enough to hold the connection.
I attached a mittor to my webcam, so the ony thing what the people can see are my hands and the paper.

I wont even compare your situation with mine, but let me tell you that i'm on a similair phase. I've been traveling for one month and of course, i drew all the way. i filled 3 sketchbooks, one has been stolen, in paris(but i bought another one right away, and bigger) so, the other one is to big to be scanned and the other one i won't scan it until i photograph the big one and do a collection of what i drew on the trip. I said this to let you know that i'v been drawing without thinking a lot! only drawing what i see.
And I'm filling sketchbooks way to fast, as i never did before, i can't even find the time to scan all the pages, and honestly i don't want to.
The thing is, i'v been drawing a lot without thinking and now i embraced a project and the "thinking" part is starting to show up more and more.
If i have to classify the thinking part and the not thinking part, i would say that.. i don't know. if you draw for other eyes to see, thinking will burst the way you paint/draw and you learn! And not only from yourself, but from what you expect that the viewers will feel while looking at your work. If you draw for yourself, then thinking is not needed, drawing will be an experimentation, justifying yourself is not needed, so the drawing is, in the end, yourself, wich doesn't happen when you think while creating something. i guess.
Anyway i look at your sketchbook pages and my jaw just drops into the floor eahc time i do it.
May i ask you something? Do you draw lots of faces/people/expressions in the street with your regular medium? because i see life drawings yes, but mostly buildings, and the poses seem from posemaniacs.. I love your inks, I was trying to imagine myself with a drawing kit like yours, but i guess it would be much harder to sketch something spontanious with those materials. anyhow, you do have lots of excelent drawings of people/faces wich seem that were made from life, spontaneous. do you inkwash them right after you trace the lines or you do it in some other phase?
and what kind of sketchbook is yours? i saw the photo but i dont recognise it. Are the drawings scanned, or photographed? (i have to get a camera, not only for bigger drawings but to take some photographs of stuff that i can't draw in the place, and then draw while i'm at home)
I'm sorry if i'm being anoying, and of course, you don't have to answer me if you dont feel like it now.
cheers!

Master Mind, I love your work. I've been going through your book page by page, and admiring all of the different character sketches and studies. I'm so glad to see that you're old school, and you don't do everything in Photoshop. That's a great program, but there's nothing like sharpening up a pencil or doing your own ink wash.
But then I saw that picture you did of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. Man, I've been there a few times, and knowing that the view from the bridge was the last thing a man would see before being locked away in the prison on the other side, you've really captured a feeling of desperation and gloom in your drawing. Maybe you didn't intend to, but it felt loud and clear to me. Excellent job!
By the way, you mentioned on the first or second page about drawing from WW2 photos...were you meaning that you look at the photo for the basis and then sort of add your own details to the picture?

I see your point, but If your intention is to create more than just beautyful pictures, the thinking is mandatory a part of the process even a part of the artwork..
Lately I didn`t draw many faces from life. And I rarely have my indian ink with me when I am doing so. Using simply some fineliners or a black colored pencil like here (http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=946560&stc=1&d=1270284423) But the most part of my sketchbook was drawn from head.

Thank you.
I agree with you about Photoshop. An year and a half a go I did a series of illustrations in Photoshop --> (http://mr.cgsociety.org/gallery/) and it was always very frustrating in the end to have just a file on your desktop. And people don`t have styles anymore, pretty much all Ps paintings look the same. And one of the biggest mistakes that is done these days is to start painting in Ps if you don`t have any traditional experience.
Yes a while ago I sketched from ww2 photos. I just used the photos as a basic and tried to get away from them as the sketch developed. It`s a good technique to find new forms and lines in your usual sketching or drawing habit

havnt seen a sketchbook that really inspired me in a long time.
I think it was loomis that said that drawing is really a thinking man's art? or maybe it was harold speed.
im looking forward to seeing more!
I was one of those wanting to learn ps painting without any knowledge of traditional paints. Do you think that knowing traditional paints will help me make paintings that don't have that samey photoshoppey feel? I can imagine that it would help me learn to paint much better and understand painting better, but not necessarily help much or at all when it comes to making ps art that looks distinctive and with its own style.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH this sketchbook just blew my mind! I'm loving the use of inks and colour in your sketchbook to really give it some interest and depth. Also your line-work. Well.. theres nothing to say about it that other people haven't already said so I won't even try. Its sick. Keep up the intense amount of sketching, youve motivated me to try tomorrow and fill some serious sketchbook pages! I might even do some copies of your heads to try and develop some of that intersting style.
Keep it up man - subscribed and rated 5

nice post man - you say they aren't drawings and just doodles but they are pretty much exactly what I aspire to be able to draw! Are most of these from imagination again? and if so.. what would you advise to learn to draw heads from imagination.. lots from reference? And we are for the moment discounting the construction and loomis (I've done huuge amounts of that)

..all from head with no exeptions. I rarely draw from refs. If I make over and over the same misstake or have trouble drawing something I go study it for a couple of hours and then go back and continue drawing from my imagination
raminafshari
no process with this kind of drawings I just draw .. if I use watercolors or washes I add these after the linedrawing- sketch is done

The next step in your art improvement would
be if you would step out from your comfort zone.
The last two or more pages are on done on a same
pattern.
Ok, you are totally great at this ink combined with
watercolor, and all looks unbelievably amazing, but...
there is always a but; when you feel that you hit the
ceiling of something, you should try something else.
You should tempt yourself with some new quests now....

Wow, great sketches. Great linework ... very inspirational to pick up the pencil myself more.
Maybe you wrote it here before (8 pages is a lot to check). Is it normal paper? Or Moleskine sketchbooks or such?

Hey Michael what a fantastic imagination you have. Makes for a brilliant sketchbook and I've really enjoyed looking through it and your website and blog. Plus I've been checking out how you initial your work as I have the same initials! :)

As always, those last few pages were great, and that ink piece really blew me away. I would have to say that my main influences in work to date are Sergio Toppi, Frank Frazetta, Moebius and Master Mind! So just know that you are up there with those guys in my mind regarding your linework.
Keep on posting thats for sure, this sb is a goldmine
