Don't know if this will ever be daily, but I can hope ;) I've been meaning to start a sketchbook here.. so I might as well start it now.
I will begin by posting a drawing of Oberon and Puck that I finished last night:
http://www.toddpowelson.com/images/Oberon-Puck_low.jpg
... followed by a Sax player that I drew recently:
http://www.toddpowelson.com/images/Sax-Low.jpg
.. and then some flowers:
http://www.toddpowelson.com/images/Flower-low.jpg
.. colored:
http://www.toddpowelson.com/images/Flowers-colorLow.jpg
.. and that is about it for now.

interesting style.. sorta cubism meets block printing.. love the coloring... i was listening to "Wang Dang Doodle" by Koko Taylor a few hrs ago..

Thanks.. Cubism is a big influence on me and I've also done a lot of artwork for screenprinting (stencil style).
I will probably color Oberon and Puck next. Or I may draw Ophelia.. been meaning to. There are a few Shakespearean plays that I need to draw and I may draw them all out before I start coloring them..
Not sure why but the song was stuck in my head when starting the thread. I figured that it was as good a title as any :D Kind of funny that you were just listening to it :) Good tune!
Edit: Maybe I will include a couple more drawings.. not because I am particularly proud of them but because I just finished them and this is my sketchbook..

Great style! it's unusual to see such a prominant style on here as people tend to try and get everything as lifelike as possible.
really cool....................post more!:D

Yo Foz! Good to be seen! I have been laying low for a bit. I have been oil painting for the last while (and I paint very slow :( ) and have been avoiding my computer for some reason. Still, my sketchbook is floating around the house and I try to fill it up. Hope to have some nice drawings for you to see :)
Thanks Swift... the realism on display here is very nice but it is something that I dont really strive for. It is nice to get such encouraging feedback. I will try and get some more of my ideas down.
Thanks again :chug:

Just finished drawing Ophelia.. floating down the river:
http://www.toddpowelson.com/images/Ophelia-Low.jpg
.. thought I might throw in a page of sketches trying to work out the composition and also trying to figure out how to make the face look less... dead... I guess they all look dead.. hmm..

Thanks van.. I am glad you like :)
Well, I have decided that rather than start a new thread I will just drop my Oberon/Puck WIP in here... make this the Wang-Dang Doodle dumping ground.
Here is what I have spent far too much time on these last couple days:

Woah, freaky style. Loose but still expressive.
Your inking is tops, man.
How much per day do you spend doing art?

Thanks lavhoes.. I am really trying to push my style now. Just started developing in this way a year or so ago and now I want to see how far I can take it.. or in what directions it can go. Both in the line art and color.
As far as artwork per day goes, recenty (since Oct/Nov) I have been averaging probably about 4-6 hour per night after work and maybe about 6-10 hours per day on the weekend. Most of my time recently has been spent oil painting lately though. I work as a graphic designer and stare at the computer all day. Lately, I havent been able to work on the computer at night/weekends too so I've been painting :) Of course, some nights I might not do anything. Usually go out on Friday and maybe read a bit some nights rather than create my own stuff. But Ive been doing pretty good and getting my ideas down for the last while :D
Problem is, I create very slowly... plus I get a lot of ideas and can easily sidetrack myself (this is actually something I am trying to stop doing. Have an idea and finish it)...

Well, I am making some progress. Got to try and figure out what to do with the trees. Actually have something in mind but I am not quite getting it yet. Ah well, still need to finish the figures first, I guess.

Boy, it has been a very long time since I have posted to this thread, let along the forums. Going on three, maybe four years. Not sure why I feel inspired to update my sketchbook now, other then I have been creating a few pieces, and Conceptart.org has a number of artists that I respect and check in on regularly..
Anyway, pretty much everything in my life has changed over these last years, and I am sure it has changed for the better. I hope that my artwork has gotten better too.
Where to start.. well, since I began this thread way back when with Oberon and Puck, and also the beginnings of Ophelia, I guess I will start by showing how those turned out.
Oberon and Puck (Finished in 2004. I like parts of this, but think it could have been better):
http://www.toddpowelson.com/Images/Oberon-Puck-Color.jpg
Ophelia (Finished 2004):
http://www.toddpowelson.com/Images/Ophelia.jpg
More of my artwork to follow here soon.
Initially, I plan on using this sketchbook as a sort of dumping ground for my finished pieces, then I will try to update with my drawings and whatnot.

I had a friend who wanted to write a sort of encyclopedia of monsters, and she asked me if I wouldn't help out with the illustrations. The project never got off the ground, because she never really finished writing.. hehe, the way it goes sometimes. I did finish a few of the monsters however, and she did pay me for my work.
Anyway, I can't really remember the order of these, but I worked on them in 2005

For some reason I got kind of tired with doing illustrative work. I mean to say, I guess my work is, and always will be somewhat illustrative (weird word, if it is actually a word.. illustrative), but I wanted to do something a little more personal.
I started working on these flowers to clear the cob-webs out a little bit. Late 2005 - Early 2006

My girlfriend has a house that is up the canyon where I tend to walk the dogs. Kind of nice because although it feels somewhat remote, you can also look right down into the city. Anyway, this idea came when I was sitting on her porch.

There is a local sidewalk chalk arts festival here in Salt Lake City that I recreated this for in 2006. It was a great time, and I met a lot of people.. even though, after two days in the hot sun, I was ready to pass out :)

For some reason, I really like to draw dryads. Well, used to.. I think I finally got the idea down with this image though, so hopefully I can move on to other things
When I had this printed, I output onto a 20x24 (or so) film transparency, framed it, and hung that in a window. I am really happy with the technique because the natural lighting really makes it pop.. although, I need to find a better way to light it at night because it always looks a bit flat without the sun.

For the past year or so I have been working on a series that I call Dreams for Schmidty
This series is dedicated to a childhood friend who passed away, years ago, from a rare genetic disease called Fredrich's Ataxia. His name was Ben Schmidt
I've always had it in mind that I wanted to do something in his memory, but i wasn't sure what.. I don't know that this series is meant to portray any specific event, and I don't really try to re-create his likeness anywhere.. I guess I am just dedicating it to him, like an author might dedicate a book to a loved one, even though the story or subject might be about something else. Just a way to say thanks and I remember you.
I've partnered with my friends over at SLUG Magazine (Salt Lake UnderGround), and for the last 11 months have published a new piece in each issue. Still have one more month to go
Here is the series in the order it was published..
