Well, ummm... I really don't know what to say here. I guess the only thing I can say is that I need to improve...lots. I need to go back to basics and work on anatomy and value, then color and so on. I'll try and update everyday, or every other day, mainly with digital pieces because I really have to practice with that, but there will be pencil stuff as well. But for now, here are a few digis from the past couple of days.
Any comments and such are welcome.
These are all reffed from photo.

Quick master study from a Sargent self portrait. Actually learned some things from doing this one. I will have to do a longer study and see if I can learn some new techniques on brush work. And I definitely need to work on that. lol

I know I'm going to regret posting this WIP. There are lots of issues with proportions, but so far, the values are getting there slowly. I'll be posting some progression shots of this one after I fix the proportion issues. Thx for viewing.

Yo man! Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! I cant believe no one has posted on this yet! You have some killer work. The first old feller is awesome. Keep up on the Sargent study. He is the man-one of the best painters to ever live.
On this last drawing-make sure all the proportions are right and also make sure all the tones are in the right key. I like to set my lightest light and darkest dark in before working on the form. Its easy to rush into things though. My worst fault by far. Keep up the good work! Ie vill be vvatchiing you!

Sirkenneth: Thx, I'll remember that when I start to work on that one more. I agree, Sargent is the man.
Here are a couple of photo studies, one of a landscape, the other a waterscape. Both quickies. If I don't do some finished work soon, I'll never learn. So look forward to some finished pieces coming through here.

great stuff! both digital and pencil
love the sargeant study. what do you mean by "master study" though?
palladium
October 18th, 2009, 12:20 PM
Hey 007, master study is a term a lot of artists use to describe a study done after an artist who was a master of his craft. Sargent was one of those, Bouguereau and Zorn were two others. Here is a good site to look at many Master's works.

Dont call them dumb. That degrading and a bad perception to have. Its a gift to have the ability to create images so its far from dumb even if its the most arbitrary of ideas. Each one is a step closer to knowing more about yourself, so again, not dumb.
Sketchbook looks great though. I like your studies and those silhouette characters look great. I want to do more of those myself. I look forward to what you create next. :sungod:

Sunny- Thx for the enthusiastic reply. I will no longer think of my sketches in such a way again. lol. You've got a pretty good sketchbook yourself. Keep up the good work.

Thx Zorcron, I will give that a shot the next time. Good work on your end.
Quick landscape. Looked at my last landscape and tried to think what I did wrong with it. Like working too fast, not thinking where to lay the brush strokes. So on this one I tried to think more about the layout and construction and I think it turned out a lot better. Will post a few more today. C&C always welcome. Cheers.

ERIC!!! haha that's so funny that you quoted me in your sig lol.
dude, you've significantly improved man! Your self portrait and the portrait of the girl in the first post sticks out to me the most. Man, there is a drastic improvement. can't wait to sketch with you in person some time again haha :D
alright. as for crit...
you may not have expected what i'm about to say but hear me out:
when i got to art center i realized that concept art is not all about being able to paint portraits and environments really well. there is a huge emphasis on design, which is what I've been lacking lately. what i mean by design is, very well drawn and organized layouts of what you're going to paint. When companies look at your portfolio to hire you, they want to see your design process, they want to see sketches of how you got your final piece to look the way it does. So, since you've accomplished a super awesome status with painting/rendering, stop doing people. (not completely, but from now on, start designing things).
Start collecting mass reference of vehicles, planes, cars, environments, actual armor, weapons, and anything you can think of. Then design your own stuff using the silhouette methods, or by any method you choose. Even speed painting results in some interestingly shaped things. Do tons of sketches and start mastering the technique of doing "draw-throughs". Practice being able to do perfectly straight lines with pen, it comes in handy when doing a quick mock up of your design, be it an environment, vehicle, or whatever. Keep in mind that, in concept art, you have to be able to design something that a 3D artist/builder can make an accurate "version" of whatever is you painted or designed. So, there's my crit for now lol.
If you have any questions as to what to start with just let me know,
keep up the good work sir :)

I'm just impressed by the old man you did in post 1. The texture you created over his face is really awesome. On the last post you should maybe try playing with different colour patterns. But that just might be a mather of opinion. adding some lightening and shadows in the background may do the trick too.
Good luck further on!

Thx sketchibo, I used a pastel like brush similar to the one's that Jaimie Jones uses.
Thx Flaskpost for the encouraging comment.
Hey thx Sung-jae. If that's not an inspiring comment, I don't know what would be. Thx much. Hope I'll see you again sometime. Maybe I'll have to come to New York and find you:D
Following my friend Med's advice and starting to do some designs. Cheers.:)

Nice portrait studies.
For your painting style. Do you tend to like to use tiny strokes and build up? For me I like to use board strokes then tiny or a airbrush base. So see your style is interesting to me to see the harder strokes with less blending.
palladium
November 8th, 2009, 07:48 PM
Thx for stopping by Pigeonkill, I don't like too, but it just happens. So I might see where I go with taking that approach, and if it doesn't work, then I'll try it from big to little. For some reason, I don't get into blending as much as I should, but I'll definitely be doing that more often. Thx. :)
Another spread of designs, these are fun.:D
Pixie Trick
November 8th, 2009, 09:09 PM
Really , really nice start to a sb! The designs are looking fab. The one thing I would suggest is to up the brush opacity. I know a couple of folks were doing 100% opacity hard edge studies around here and it was very interesting to see. Layers of lower opacity tend to muddy the form you're trying to create.
Nice start and I'm looking forward to seeing more!
