View Full Version : Steampunk characters...

it's some character's designs I've made for a game that wasn't finished. I've worked almost 3 years in a big videogame company, on more than 10 different projects and absolutely no one had been released.
Everything was thrown away...
Hundreds of drawings useless...
I'm fed up with this...and prefer doing illustrations for print...So people can see your work

For this project we've choosed a particular rendering we would have seen in the final 3D...not realistic but stylized.
It was an opportunity to try something different...

Maaaan! Look at that!
What happened to the company? Why did it never release a thing?

In time: I LOVE STEAMPUNK!

Fantastic! The more i see of your work the more i want to see.... MORE!

As you said these are a little different from your other work, more stylized, but that matters not. You seem to have equal facility however you chose to express yourself.

Thanks for sending these in. SEND MORE!

Morphine : The company was a big one ( at the time the "biggest independent developer in the world" as they said, with more than 200 employees )
and in 2 years they only released...2 games !
The company had grown up too fast, surfing on the "Internet madness" ( sorry for my english ) but the commercial strategy and the way it was managed wasn't the best !!
now this company doesn't exist no more...However I've worked with very talented people and we've got such very interesting concepts...
There also a crisis in this field in France...

I hope one day i'll work on a game that will be finished and released. And a good one :)
(CALL ME PLEEEEEEEEEZZZ !!! :D )
I'm joking but I saw some days ago Doom3, the terrific nonauthorized demo they've shown at the E3 and it was too impressive...It is terrific !! It made me want to draw again for videogame ! Enormous !

Jon : it's one thing I developped in the Videogame industry and in my illustrations : the will to adopt a particular style, the one that fits the project at best...Or I try
I find it very interesting...

I've got also my own "oldies" :D
i'll post some others interesting videogame's stuff in another thread...

your work is FANTASTIC!

i too, have lost copious amounts of work due to projects collapsing in mid developement, or finished gemes never seeing the shelves for one reason or another.

i know your pain all too well.

keep posting stuff!

Man Aleksi, everytime I view something you post my eyes roll out of my head and stick to my comp screen.Damn that radiation! I especially like the last beast monster, it kinda reminds me of the Felhound from Warcraft3. It looks so sweet and tasty too. Just like candy!
I am looking forward to your posts now, great work!

By the way, do you just limit yourself to 2d work or do you know how to convert your concepts into models and skinning, animating, etc?

Those are so awesome, every time when
I open your thread I find superb stuff.
I`m sorry to hear that that games aren`t
finished and released, did you ever try to draw comics and
work for some of your big Comics Publishers like
Glenat,Soleil, Humanoids,Dargaud,etc? I have some
good friends here whitch working for them(Aleksa Gajic-for
Soleil,Zoran Janjetov-for Humanoids,Drazen Kovacevic-for
Glenat)and thats what I`m will trying to achieve.Maybe you
hear for them.I think that you can do some major stuff in
comics.

Those are quite amazing. Since the game was canceled and such, would you mind me modeling a few of them, just for arts sake? I'm completely in love with those two characters. :D

Definitely you have a real ability to melt your own style into different projects and themes. What we all wait for now is to see a website of yours in order to find more cool stuffs like these ! When is it for ?

aleksi>> terrible!! i like the type of characters, less the creature, it seems less inspired... great stuff anyway, for sure!

maybe the 'cutout' filter is... abused a little? only my taste! :P

later! :)

wonderful stuff, sad that none of these games ever hit the market. :(

Thanks everybody!

Lono : What a pain doing so much stuff for nothing !
I was very tired...
I drew even Pamela Anderson, Asterix and Obelix characters, license's things not very funny.
At the beginning, I was 200% motivated but with so much disappointments, at the end I was just "professionnal" in my work...

I think there is a lot of people in the same case in this industry...
When I see behind the scenes works for all the company I've worked for and those I simply know, I always think about art books but with rights and other marketing and strategic questions, it's logically impossible except for games already released...
Maybe even with kind of limited editions it could be "stimulating" for people and sort of great promotionnal medium fot the company...
We are all looking for this kind of books...
But it's another question...

batteram : I never do 3D, I have only some basics but I never spend time on developing it.
I sometimes did some mapping and even work on Game Boy Advance levels...

loga4 : I've got contacts and offers to do Comics stuff for French Comics publishers. But It's hard at the beginning living only of it.
I don't have still signed on but I've got current projects and one of them is a big US comic( can't say anymore...)
I already draw and inked 35 pages for a comic but it was really too fast ( for example, 10 pages in 5 days) , very very too huried...not my choice
I know all your friends stuff and it's very good !

Painiac : There is only 2 unalterable conditions for modeling them :
-You cannot use them for professionnal and commercial business. it goes whithout saying...
-You must send me samples of the result... in fact I would be very happy receiving your 3d interpretations :)

MrMagnetic : I love it too !! :)

LivingRope : I've got ideas for my website, a good friend to help me building it but still no time to do it... i hope soon...

Bengal : i didn't use the "cut-out" filter for this renderings. Only selections filled with flat colors and 100% opacity brushes.

aleksi>> oh, i would have guessed so : i was meaning it was the kind of rendering one obtains with cutout, nothing more! ;) sorry!!

absolutely great anyway, mate!

Aleksi: no shit man.. i completely agree with you. it seems weve been down the same roads.

you know what,, Warcraft 3 came with a book full of Dev artwork.. concepts,, illustrations and what not.

i think that is a great idea, but your right,, there would be too many legal obsticals for most 3rd party developers to do something like this.. especially post mortom. you would run into intelectual property issues and a general lack of enthuziasim from the publisher,, who would have to float the bill and put the books on shelves.
we talked about doing something like this after Alice shipped, but the company emidiately crumbled and that was that. :(

Fantastic character designs - strong, well posed characters. I like the way you use textures from photographs to enhance the backgrounds.

I can relate to being in that situation where your work is going to waste. How frustrating it must have been for you. I guess that being able to adapt to the situation makes you a professional...

Many of those best ideas that are "thrown away" eventually resurface in future projects.
Like they have a life of their own.
These ones are too good to die ;)

Bon chance, mon ami...

Don't be so sad it's just a bad time you have...

Perhaps this is a good thing that you don't work for videogame. Your talent will explode over the world for your own illustrations or comics.

I think nothing happend without reasons.

Enfin bref bonne chance à toi vu ton travail je ne me fais pas trops de soucis :)))

Aleksi
November 12th, 2002, 07:26 AM
I hope I will not pass for a "crying girlie" no more :)
I was only relating my own experience. I'm not sad, ruined or in emotionnal distress...
But make yourself easy, I was joking and I've got no problems for what's follow :D

Kness : That's why we had a drink last saturday ? :D
Don't know if you get real "misunderstood-artist" problems but you weren't looking very fresh late in the evening :p

Bone : Same point of view as you...Nothing happens without reasons and there's dynamics you create yourself...
There's also cool stuff on your website !

wow !
your work is amazing...:) :)
if think you're talking about kalisto aren't you ? it's quite a pity what happened. Well at least you're very talented and there's no doubt you can find a new job in the video game industry.
Maybe you should try the 'bd scene', which is quite important in france ( oh my, it's my country too :D )
well good luck and keep it up ;)
