My Story: I'm a 27 year old artist from Colorado. I have a BA in Art and Education. I'm working towards my dream of being a freelance illustrator and concept artist. There is so much awesome work out there and I'm really happy to be on CA. Thanks for looking at my book!

Unfortunately I can't give you career-advice as I am not a professional either, but I just wanted to say that I really like everything you've shown so far. :) Especially the woman in the bathroom... Just beautiful!

The years have gone by and I'm still not a professional artist.
I'm in exactly the same boat, so I'm afraid I'm not in much of a position to give advice - but maybe we can cheer each other on? :D
My main problem is that I have never put myself out there and sold myself enough. Networking and just making yourself and your work known is a big part of success and I've never done enough of that (hoping to change that from now on though). Partly it's because I always feel as though I still have so much to learn and I'm therefore not qualified to DO REAL WORK. On the rare occasions when I have had paid jobs, I felt like kind of a fraud, even though the clients were really happy with what I produced. I don't know if you relate to any of that.
You're certainly not lacking in the talent department - I love everything you've posted here, in particular the bathroom piece and the girl on the wires, which have stunning composition. Please keep posting your beautiful work!

Here's some more sketches (some from memory, some from life, and some more loomis studies) and an environment i'm working on. Thanks for all your help and comments!
heix33: thanks man, I am in the process of going digital. I'll post the one here I'm workin' on. I am not happy with it because the perspective is all wrong so I'm gonna start over and fix everything. any suggestions on a good free tutorial somewhere?
Bartovan: thanks, i dig your sb too!

hhmm, you made me really think about that one, you seem to know almost all already, but the buildings maybe seem to be too soft edges.
I decided to show you different styles how to paint in phostoshop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Bc0mNcMaug
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqZFIWK-OjA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxwSC4pFZgE
I start with masses, then go more detail, doing the values at the same time, then use the color layer to add color and overlay layer to increase contrast between highlights and shadows, then rework the piece. But I'm not very good at it, you just have to find your own style in it.
I'd suggest you to watch Kekai Kotaki blog, he is one of the coolest artists, he uses pretty much the same style as I do, but the difference is, he does it good-
masses, going more detail, value, cool blue color layer, warm colors, rework the piece, something like this.

I hope this helps.

Very nice paintings! I think if you want to be a concept artist for the entertainment industry it may be good to create some work that relates more with that industry. Im looking forward in seeing you tackle that :D

maximunki: Thanks! I'm really concentrating on learning colors better. I'm trying to notice which color chords I like better than others and why.
Bendragon: Thanks. You're so right. I'm gonna get some cool stuff out soon I promise. and digital too. Thanks for the inspiration from your sketchnook. Its so awesome!!
Fishpail: Thanks, i really want to start painting more digital stuff though when I get a break from house portraiture. blah....

Not to detract from your great caricatures, but the waves crashing painting looks amazing. The lady on the bottom seems like from a completely different painting but you've melded them together so well it's arresting rather then absurd.

Nice painting and color values. I really like the last one with the gal on the red fabric. Very rich in the use of color and it just feels comfortable and warm. Nice work!!

Here's a WIP I've been working on the last couple days. The drawing and then a value study and color study. Its pretty trendy maybe but was a lot of fun drawing it. I'm not particularly enthralled about the colors I've got on there now or the composition but this is the best I got right now. Please critique it guys because I really feel like this one isn't going exactly where I wanted it to. Thanks....

At least you're selling stuff! I wish I wasn't so hung up about painting what people want to buy, I'd be less poor :)
On your dangergirl, her face is lacking depth as of now. Maybe some more shadows akin to what's going on beneath her chin?
