This is my first post on ConceptArt, so I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Marco Bucci; I work as a matte painter/concept artist in Toronto, Canada. Also a dedicated student of painting. So much good art on these forums...decided to finally sign up and post some stuff. Feel free to c&c!
To start with, here's a fairly straight forward cityscape. Every matte painter inevitably has to do a fair share of these :)

These are thumbnails painted on the Nintendo DS, using an awesome little app called Colors! I'm sure many people here have it.

Olivier - thanks for the subscription! I'll try and get a new vid up there soon.
BenDragon - Thanks a lot! Yeah, Schmid is definitely one of my big influences. Along with Sargent, Weistling, Lipking...you can find traces of all of them somewhere I think.
Rustveld - Definitely get yourself a DS. Lots of fun! Mine doesn't seem to be working anymore unfortuantely :(
Jamesharry - thanks!

Thanks guys!
TheGnoll - very cool gallery you have as well.
Here's some more stuff.
My friends over at The Labyrinth Book Store (which some of you may be familiar with) are asking artists to submit a piece to their Iron Giant Project. Anything goes, as long as it's related to the film. This is mine:

This is a straight forward quicksketch concept for a matte painting:
http://www.marcobucci.com/uploads/citymattesketch.jpg
And some color keys for a short film project that's currently in limbo.

This one was a fun experiment. I originally painted everything in focus, and then hand-painted a depth map to get the blur. A depth map will be familiar to any 3D artist out there. It's basically just a grayscale image, where black represents close distance, and white represents far distance (and everything in between). This map can be fed into Photoshop's Lens Blur filter to achieve a sophisticated depth of field blur.

MY GOD I WANT THAT DS THING NOW AND HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR SKYSCRAPERS LOOK SO NEAT!? D:
Your work is gorgeous! I think for the more cartoony layouts, you could have them a bit more 'lived in', say a washing line full of mine worker's dungarees and underpants, or posters or signs for stores, etc. Thank you for your inspiring work! :)

I don't really sketch with the DS anymore...I've switched to the iTouch! I'm using Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile for these, with a Pogo stylus.

I have a question Mr. Marco, since you are from Canada, at least I think so, I have a question, if you were applying to a artschool in Canada, which one would you apply to, and why. Iam looking around, before I make my final decision on the college I got accepted to, which is Ringling, youve probadly heard of it.

Hello Marco, I just noticed your sketchbook and I'm glad I did. I like the artwork, especially one with the adjustment to the depth of field, I didn't know that was something you could do with photoshop. I had a chance to take a look at some of your youtube videos and I thought they were great too, keep it up!

Hey thanks everyone!
JesArt - The most known one would have to be Sheridan College. They have animation and illustration programs. I didn't go to art school so I can't really recommend anything first hand. But Sheridan has a decent reputation, and I work with a bunch of people who went there.
Here's a recent painting for an art book that I'm working on.

Do you use photos for the brick textures? Either way it looks very convincing. :)

Wowsa - yikes you got some hot stuff here! Your enviros are just tasty to stare at - awesome man. Something about the focus of them... the sharpness here and the blur there just draws you into it - well done! (I really like that portrait too where your co-worker sat for you - awesome!!) Looking forward to your next updates! Keep em coming!

Hey guys,
Been awhile since my last update.
I was recently in Europe. I carried with me a small Moleskine watercolour book, with a pan set of watercolours, and a tube of white Gouache. Simple and fast to set up, and I sketched to my heart's content :)

hey man i stumbled into your sb after someone linked me your painting fundamentals video and i am so glad i did! your digital paintings are wicked but what struck me the most is your euro trip watercolours - the prague castle one and the one in le beaux(?) are just so wicked. thanks a lot.
if i may ask, did any of them have pencil underdrawings or did you just jump in with the watercolor?
MarcoBucci
January 28th, 2011, 07:44 PM
Hey,
Sorry for the terribly late reply.
About the watercolours - there was an incredibly loose pencil sketch underneath. I wasn't really drawing form...just hinting at composition and some of the large shapes that I wanted to be there. Then just hit the paper hard with washes, and kind of went where it took me.
Thanks for the question!

Here's some traditional stuff. The small sketches are from my moleskine book that I travel with. Watercolor with white gouache (read more about it just one post above this). The portrait is oil paint.
