So I've been browsing this site for the past 2 weeks or so. I must say it is very motivational to see all the talent and effort that is everywhere on here. I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and throw a sketchbook of my own up on here for critique. I hope to slowly improve my skills and move to full renders. Guess time will tell. Anyway on with the sketchies.

Pandah: Thank you ^^ . After viewing all the exceptional work on these forums I was expecting and prepared to be ripped to shreds, but thats kind of what I was hoping for too. But Im glad you liked some of my works. I posted on your sketchbook so you already know....but ill say it again, I really love those acrylics lol. I look forward to seeing both of our artistic abilities improve. ^^Y

@Glaedr thanks for viewing. The portrait is actually an unfinished oil portrait i started. I plan to post more of it as it nears completion. The still-life are done though, one with bottles is in graphite, one with the head in the middle is in charcoal. The clothe is a conte crayon black/white on brown paper. Stuff toward the top is more quick conceptual stuff im working on but just threw it on paper so i wouldnt forget. Hope to post some of the finished versions of them soon.

Looks like you’re grasping perspective well which is invaluable knowledge to have.
I’d recommend doing some artist studies. For my first year of uni, the tutors made us do this task. It helped considerably in finding out what makes up a good drawing, how a master artist tackles a certain subject matter, how one can use line quality to get a desired effect..etc. It is also good mental hand to eye co-ordination.
It’s best to start with the most well-known artists, the names you’ve heard a gazillion times. They are common knowledge for a reason but it may not be obvious why until you study them - Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Degas, Egon Schiele, Delacroix, Poussin, Gustave Dore, Albrecht Dürer…the list goes on. I'd start with just searching for the artist's drawings n find one that tickles your fancy.

Sorry for the slow delay on replies everyone, yesterday was a busy day :).
@ Brun : thank you for the encouragement, I know i have a bad tendency to make stuff "muddy" and sometimes things washout completely. I usually try to avoid it but in the end its hard for me to resist the "put a paper towel to it and smudge it like crazy". Im hoping maybe some work with pen instead of smudgeable tools might help me with my values. As for color...yah im usually lost , but I managed to get into a Color Theory class for this spring so Im excited. Thanks again for your crits and suggestions ^^ (btw ill post the pen study I did last night at the bottom of this post. Took 8 hours (if it looks messy thats because I actually drew and added in values with my signature, ..so writing out my name thousands of times *eyes blurry*.
@Callumbo: Sadly my perspective is actually horrible. Its passable when im doing still-life or direct observation, but when I try to invent perspective for conceptual art...yah thats another story. I like your suggestion about studying the masters. I dont know why but im very drawn toward mannerism, so artists like Parmagianino and Tintorretto catch my eye. I also very much like Da Vinci and Durer, and yes Rembrandt probably has some of my favorite enviornemtnal art.

Decided to take down all my quick doodles and only included works that have some degree of polish on them. Will have another update this afternoon. Btw does ayone know of a way to update thumbnails without having to delete all images and repost them all again with your desired thumbnail the being the first upload?

You have a very nice grasp of perspective which is something that I still struggle with from time to time, so I'm pretty impressed. I don't really know what to say other than that, at the moment. I'd love to see more of your stuff--especially individual studies and whatnot.

Tobuoi thank you for the kind words. And as requested heres an updated. I think this is a good example of one of those works you start out excited about, but by the time you are done you absolutely hate it. Anyway let me know what you think about this new one.
