Hey everybody, thanks for all the comments. I'm a really big fan of feedback so please keep it coming!
Pandah- definitely see where your coming from. I'm usually a fan of chaotic linework, but i think i may need to tone it down a bit
Brun- Thanks man! Faces are always a struggle for me so it's something ill make sure to keep working on.
Kuidf- Thank you!
Glaedr- Glad you like the digital stuff, ill try to get some more stuff up soon...i guess now actually.
So here's two things I'm working on. both are WIP's so feedback would be very much appreciated.

Really digging those digis, dude. Especially the undead dinorider thingy, nice concept. You seem to handle color and values well already.
There's not too much to crit here. Maybe some of the edges could use some definition.

Decided to work on some industrial design for the day. Pretty happy with the final product (for now...)
PHATandy
May 19th, 2010, 06:20 PM
hey man great start to this SB, always enjoy seeing a good start!
With the spaceship I think you got a pretty nice shape, unique and well formed. But it would be better if you could cement some details in with little bits of extra geometry. Think about making those intakes really look like they go into the ship. Or having some insides of the cockpit viewable, or little bumps and dips on the surface of the wings.
You got the overall feel down pretty well so its something else to think about next time :)
Keep up the good work man.

Hey everybody.
Thanks for the tips PHATandy. I'm definitly going to have to be doing some more Industrial design stuff and i'm always really happy to see comments and critiques.
Anyhow here's an update on the Starfighter. Getting closer to being done but still some detail work and issues to iron out.

May 20th, 2010, 08:57 PM
Those vehicle designs are really cool! Loads of fun little shapes to look at. I can see you enjoy playing with shapes. One crit is to maybe study value a bit more. Your figure drawings seem to be lacking a basic understanding of rendering and how light affects form. I'm looking for highlights, core shadows, reflected light, cast shadows, etc. A simple rendering of a sphere with a single light source will help show you all of the components you need to have in your figure. Keep up the great work!

Nice drawings, especially the figures. I like the snake women from last year, but I can't imagine how she'd move! I'd love to see how an animator would approach that.
The spaceship has some perspective problems.

It wouldn't take much to fix them up. Good work, keep it up.

Some more life drawing!
dmoreno
June 4th, 2010, 10:16 AM
you're getting really good at those life drawings!! I would recommend practicing more feet drawings, so you can feel more secure drawing them in the future, try it with reference until you feel comfortable with the forms and then you should be ready for capturing them quickly with your life drawings! I also like those digital works, the last two have really nice values into them, keep it up!
Auspiciouspanda
June 4th, 2010, 11:34 AM
Hey Dmoreno thanks for the feedback! I definitely agree that feet are something i need to work on. Haven't quite wrapped my head around the structure yet.

Can't get enough of those figure drawings, they're very nicely drawn and shaded. Great use of values to define the planes of the face in your portrait paintings as well, it really shows you have a very solid understanding of the human skull.
Keep it up!
Auspiciouspanda
June 6th, 2010, 04:17 PM
Thanks Cgaddict. Drawing the human head is one of my favorite subjects and lately i've been really trying to define it's volume through the planes of the face and skull. Really glad you noticed!
Here's an update on the character i've been working on. It occured to me that i need a pilot for the spacefighter i've been working on, so she may become just that.
Auspiciouspanda
June 7th, 2010, 01:30 AM
I decided i really wasn't happy with some of the aspects of the fighter i've been working on. I re-explored some shapes in it and think it's starting to come together in a more successful way.
Auspiciouspanda
June 7th, 2010, 11:38 PM
Think I'm getting pretty close to finishing up the fighter design, probably just gonna add the finishing touches tomorrow morning.
I think the pilot is fitting nicely with the ship at the moment. I might do a version of her all suited up eventually though.

Heres an update on the...err..ninja assasin i guess. Been trying to experiment more with brushes in this piece as i find i stick to just a few in most cases.
I really admire the brushwork that Nic Klein creates in his digital work so i've been trying to develop brushes that feel similar to that, if anyone has any pointers i'd really appreciate it!

June 26th, 2010, 01:43 AM
Hello Panda. First time seeing your SB. You've got some great stuff in here. I especially like your night and day volcano
I got some input on your ninja girl. The image overall has great flow and lighting but I'm wondering how the guy on the right lost his head? -haha- Did the girl cut it off? If so, her pose and positioning wouldn't lead me to think so. I would suggest either redoing her pose or putting pistol wielding man and his head as well as a puddle of blood on the floor. Then add some dripping blood on her blade. I think if the head rolled right into the area where the light is strongest it would give the image more "oh shit! don't fuck with her" attitude.
If you really want to go all out I'd suggest lowering the horizon to give it more of a cinematic, dynamic view. but you're so far along already.
Anyway good work! keep it up,
-Jon

Hey, thanks everybody! Sorry for the delay in updates...moving out of my apartment sort of shook things up a bit. I've decided to make a big move out to Austin, Texas at the end of the month and I'm pretty damn excited.

Holy update! It's been pretty crazy this last week and i haven't had nearly enough time to work. I made the decision to move to Austin,TX this weekend and of course preparation is required. I did manage to get to life drawing this week though. Decided to go back to charcoal which i realized i hadn't used in forever. After a little experimentation i was finding it to be quite fun. I think i've definitely loosened up my style since the last time i used the medium.

So i just finished the trek from Saratoga Springs NY to Austin TX...and now i live here. Life moves so fast sometimes! Anywho, i got my computer all hooked up and working today so its time to catch up on painting.
I decided ill finish up the mother earth CHOW even though the deadline is way past due. I really liked where the sketch was going and i think it could be a neat portfolio piece.

Started something new to work on this morning. Someone suggested that i do something a little bit more cinematic and i decided that's probably a really good idea.
I've been meaning to do something with a native american influence, and horses are always fun to draw. Everything is still pretty loose but i tend to tighten up way too quickly so I think thats a good thing for now.
Auspiciouspanda
August 8th, 2010, 06:03 PM
Some progress on the last piece. Had a hard time working out the anatomy of the horse creature but i think its finally coming together. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to find some reference for the chest of a horse.

Hey Panda, first time seeing your SB and you've got some awesome stuff in here, I liked your Viking CHOW particularly as well as the dark themed digi's on the first couple of pages, you create a really good sense of atmosphere with the lighting your playing around with, I cant believe you started out that good! Thanks for the inspiration mate, will check back soon.

fudgeloaf Hey thanks for checking all my stuff! Im super glad you like what you see. I promise you i didn't start being as good as i am today. There's a lot of hard work and frustration that happened before this sketchbook existed and i've still got a long way to go! Regardless, i'm enjoying every minute of it.
So i haven't posted much life drawing stuff lately, but i had a chance to go to some really awesome sessions here in Austin. One of those is with the ATX TAD pod which is just chok full of talent and some really cool dudes. I most definitely plan on going back weekly.

well actually we just happened to be doing a longer pose at life drawing today so... good timing i guess!

Oooh! That last lifedrawing is soo cool! Your lifedrawings in general are awesome:)
Also- great variety to your work. It's really cool how you're going for finished illustrations rather than just random sketches of characters here and there. I need to do that too:)
Keep posting and having fun now:)
Auspiciouspanda
September 14th, 2010, 11:15 PM
raminafshari The life drawings are all from live model sessions. Some of the poses are longer then other varying from 15min to 2 hours.
Windmaker Glad you like my life drawing, and thanks! I do try to balance my sketches and finished illustrations. i have this habit where i like to work things into the ground, leave them alone for a few weeks, and then come back to finish them up.
speaking of which...
I decided i really needed an exterior environment in my portfolio so i'm polishing up the volcano pieces i did a while ago
Auspiciouspanda
September 15th, 2010, 01:23 PM
So i've finished my night version of the volcano piece and id say i'm about 75% there with the day. I also went back and made some serious adjustments to the last illustration i was working on. There were too many issues with the composition and movement in the piece i was unhappy with but i think its come a long ways.

I also attended GDC online and met some really cool people who gave me some really useful pointers on my portfolio and how to get a job. Plenty of stuff to update with, but for the moment i'll show you the personal project i've been working on most recently. I wanted to see how close to completion i could bring a finished illustration in one day and it turned out pretty well. I didn't finish it, but i got pretty far.

It seems like both Link and Dark Link's poses are a little awkward - I can't tell really what either of them are planning to do or where they came from. But other than that your use of color and composition is gorgeous.
I'll have to keep an eye on this sketchbook.

Thanks for postin in my book. You seem like someones who's pushing their rendering as well as concepts at the same time, lookin nice!
In the last one, the left corner of the main middle path (just left of mickey) feels like it could be separated further from the midground rocks behind it...the values get a little close. The pale green color is interesting but may not be harmonizing, could try shifting it around to another hue. The dramatic depth from midground to background is nice and simplifies its readability, however you could push the depth just a bit further yet.
I would actually try different elements other than those cliffs on the left side - they do point towards the ship, however its almost overkill imo and you could have a more natural formation that pushes the depth on the left side instead? You've done a great job making the slanted ship feel impactful, lets not have that angle continue with the rocks and off the page.
Those are a few things I would mess with, only light suggestions :)

Yes! more beautiful enviros to look at. The epic mickey one is epic.
Just wondering, what's your process when you decide to illustrate something like that? I'm curious to know because your work always comes out really nice and dynamic.

hey everybody, thanks for the comments.
Jakers Thanks for the pointers! I'm definitely going to have to take another look at those parts of the painting and make changes accordingly.
I've been busy doing some commission work recently, but i finally got some time in to do some personal work. This first one was just a coloring exercise i did with a sketch i liked in my sketchbook. I'm trying really hard to get faster with this stuff so this is a little over an hours work. The second image is a mock up of a personal illustration i'm working on.

Hey everyone. Its been killing me to not post stuff here lately. I've been working on quite a bit of commission work under NDA's and have found very little time to work on personal projects in the last couple months. I suppose all in all thats a really good thing, but i'm going to try to find a little more time to do some personal works even if its just quick sketches.
In the meantime here's some character designs for Dreadfox Entertainment that i'm allowed to show as well as a personal project i've been slowly chipping away at. I'm going ahead full steam with this one for the weekend, and hopefully 'll have a finished product for monday!

Hmmmm....so i haven't been here in awhile haha. Time to start updating again. I have done plenty of work between my last post and now so i shouldn't have any excuse for not posting some kind of content.
Here's a little something recent for now. Just a little sketch i decided to throw some bright colors on.

Whoa, this one (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1135196&stc=1&d=1294077582) is pretty sweet. It's like Spinal from Killer Instinct crossed with the skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts.

Awesome SB! I really liked the life drawings and all the character designs. I love the colors in the painting you;re working on!
I'm probably be totally wrong about this, but do you really need the alien guy on the right? I think the composition would be better if you focused more on the slash and cropped him out

i like the progress on the latest piece alot! would love to see finsihed D:
dont entirely agree with Vertical but not disagreeing either, i just like the open space the original gives, but cropping it down gives it a little claustrophobic feeling which i guess can be good in way too considered the situation x)
