any suggestions about what might make this more interesting? I haven't decided what colour to do the ground..

hmmmmm, I dunno, the design is cool, if you want to make this more interesting you need to create a more dynamic pose in your figure. right now it's very rigid and symetrical which is boring and unnatural. If you ever look at a person standing they rarely are in a rigid pose like this. I guess my only suggestion would be to shift it's weight, make it in the process of walking or doing sumin, I dunno if you want to do this on this piece, but something to consider for the next one!

Completely agree with JackelAnubis - It's the pose.
With a clean, simple robot design like this you need some sort of action.
Once you have worked out an action you may need to create a background (even a simple one) for this to take place.
Perhaps if you imagine what this robot was built for, you'll be able to find a suitable task and environment.
Like the colour scheme.
