Round #156 Red Hot Doom!

Topic:
Red Hot Doom!

Creature Description: Red Hot Doom-- Thanks to Corvaeus for this weeks topic. I don't really have a detailed brief this week, I just liked the way the topic sounded. Pretty open to interpretation. Design a new creature that fits the topic-- Red Hot Doom!

Deadline:
Friday October 2nd

Finals go here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=170033

note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)

I've been watching from the sidelines for a while, but I think I'm going to join in on this one.

Here are a few ideas. I immediately started thinking of swarming bugs for some reason, so I went with beetle and moth/butterfly ideas. I use the Photobooth mirror idea from the Alien Race book to come up with the shapes for them- can you guess what I used? I'm digging the bottom one so far, its got a little demon-face thing going on... I just kept drawing the rest for the heck of it. I'm only worried that these ideas won't be unique enough. Should I push the design farther?

http://i38.tinypic.com/2a6429f.jpg

these are called the collectors ,these demonic beings live in hell (well where else can they live at >_>) and collect wondering souls.

now about the thing:
*decided to go black and white first to get the details done quickly so its not that red and hot atm :D
* still havent decided about how those tentacles at the buttom ends but theyre supposed to be used as both legs and well...tentacles ^ , ^.
*lots of work to be done here so i hope ill finish it on time :D

C&C are more then welcomed so cmon ppl start stoping those crits in here ^(^ _ ^)^
and if i forgot to mention.....this topic ROCKS !aham *cough cough* back to work....

Well, I am thinking about making it like a moving mountain that spews lava everywhere. That being said, I am thinking about using turtle, lizard, giant, mountain and lava elements.
But I wanted to see what thumbnails you guys like, so here.
(these are all really rough)

Cool topic indeed!

Sperling: That's an interesting technique for finding forms. I'd say the fish route is definitely original, but the guy in the center probably has the most potential. As for the design, push it! Push it hard till it almost falls over, then you'll have a great design.

acb: Looks like it's gonna be awesome. No crit yet.

Duman: First one and 4th row far left would be my choice.

Jatari: Welcome. Great start!

WIP....Sorry about the quality, Painter never saves good Jpegs.

acb interesting monster, looks wicked!
Duman nice thumbs, I like the fat-slim lizards you have close to the bottom.
Jatari, Welcome to COW, where twisted imagination is put on paper :) looks like a hot wurm creature, cool!
scourge Love the wip man, reminds me of Aliens though..with a new twist i suppose:)
ActsOfBob lovely first post! colors, mood, and the creature looks great! keep it up.

did some doodling, My mind keeps resetting back to a behemoth-like bull so I might just go in that direction. Gonna rush it since workload kinda weighing me down. :(

Sup all?! This is my first time on COW. I did all these sketches last night and today and I'm a little stuck picking one. I like 4/6 (they're pretty much the same thing), 5 and 3). I went to art school so I can handle a good critique! Thanks everyone! This should be loads of fun.

Bradford A Rigby: I actually like the first one a lot. Like a magma demon or something like that. The fact that it floats is creepy.

Bonedaddycash: I like your creature. Especially the blade like face. Have you thought about a tail?

ActsOfBob: You creature is looking really cool, especially the face. It looks truly demonic. Im not sure about the blade feet, however. I might try a few more variants of the feet, or maybe just a few more blade designs.

ImaGEEnation: I like the head and pose of your creature, but I am having some trouble reading the rest of the figure.

Bradford A Rigby
September 27th, 2009, 07:00 PM
Okay so I did a combination of a few of the favorites and I think I'm getting closer. May add a few more tentacles and maybe a few more points to the main tentacles to make "fingers". This still isn't the finalized idea so comments and crits are welcomed and encouraged. (also made the image smaller the last)

Cy-An: Cool ideas. Reminds me a lot of the stuff filling my own head. I really like the textures you've got going on. My only crit would be to not get too carried away with them before you get the overall anatomy down.

After a second look, mine wasn't looking spicy enough. Needed some more heat. Luckily I had an extra bottle of super hot sauce in the kitchen. Probably final.

here's a quick wip, feel free to throw some well needed criti's my way
btw, the color scheme is a mess right now, but that's how i start out I'll probably settle on using red, orange and brown only.

Thanks everyone for the welcome!:)
NO WIP cause tablet is on strike...acting up. >.>
Glad to see no typical Dragons (nothing against them)

:)Sperling - can't wait to see which design you choose.

:)ACB - love the bizarre nature of the creature, has to be monolithic in scale.

:)ActsofBob - great, unique, creature! Just make sure we understand
how it moves...define the joints a little so he's less stiff!

:)Dwintop - Very boss! solid concept!

:)Phoenicorn - cool contrast! just don't lose the figure in the painting process! I want my eye to see all of it!

:)ImaGEEnation - cool beastie! a lot of character but other than the head it's hard to read!

:)Duman - totally go with the bottom middle!

:)BoneDaddy - Solid. Now pop it with color and volume!

:)Bradford A Rigby - # 5 was my favorite bipedal! the pose is perfect.
With this one focus on pushing it's depth so the design has a believable volume to it!

:)Cy-AN - Great sketches Though to help with time, focus on anatomy 1st then texture second! My fav is middle row; right column

:)Vaghauk - Looks like a very fun piece! at this stage of the game, push those values to not let the legs mesh into the body! Also the tail is looking flat. Just minor polishing things!

:)Hexism - Great beetle-bug Concept! Solid! Can't wait for the addition of FIRE!

:)Scorge - I'd say that super hot sauce is the icing on the cake!

:)Sukizan - I like the jaw features! Beef up those front legs, I find it hard that it would have an easy time getting around otherwise!

:)Labrynthine - Great movement, I can already see the glowing eyes and underworld ripping open beneath the creature! I would just have the right arm mimic the left one...for balance!

:)TrickyNick1001 Awesome tropical bombshell! or it could even be called a Kookoo Burna! anyway very unique, I'd just give it some polishing and it's good to go!

Keep it up guys I hope to fix my tablet sometime after school and before work!

These are all looking so good!
Thanks to all the comments and crits too! Keep em comin'! I haven't fully committed to one creature yet, toying with a few of them a bit further. Just hope I can come up with a good simple composition.

can't comment on everyone, its late here.
Wyna - I love it! I really like the rib cage on the underside of the back end.
TrickyNick - Nice to see a change in form, the bird idea is cool. What media???
Labrynthine - Awesome everything! Can't wait to see this worked out a little more. I gotta work on my poses... so jealous.

mythril_golem> The bird one is well done nice design on this one

Bonedaddycash>You got already some issues withyour lightning try to really thin about a light source and maybe work more on cast shadow , also maybe considering to add a background since your body color will depend on your background color

Wyna> nice star , i like it ! waiting for more improvement to really critic it

trickynick1001>The design is nice , but i think there is too much black on it ,maybe try to change the black for a dark color :)

Labrynthine>Awsome sketch , waiting for more

Suzikan> you should consider to add a colored background now that you can play with background on the skin :)

scorge>Nice one , maybe too much blur for my taste , also it could be nice to hav other color value just to add a bit of spice :p

Hexism>Nice Bug (god i hate bug) as for now i don't really understand the legs on the other side

Vaghauk> i think you should use more hardbruhs to add somte strenght to your art :) good luck

cy-AN> nice research board , like the design of your monster , my favorite go for the top middle one :)

Bradford A Rigby> nice one , like it , maybe you should smoother the "shoulder) joint , that it don't look like a LEGO ;) (ok it's exagerate but you got the point)

ImaGEEnation> i like the colors , juste i don't understand his ..shape? (not sure about the word)

Phoenicorn> it's hard to read it well i think

Duman> nice research , maybe be carefull of anatomy proportions even if it's a monster there are some anatomy rules to follow i think ^^ for exemple legs are way too small compare to arms

Dwinbotp> Awsome work , nothing to say , it's by seeing picture like this that i know why i'm training hard !

ActsOfBob> looks awsome !

Jatari>erk i hate those bugs X_X but it's nice done waiting to see more

acb> awsome all the way can't wait to see final one

Sperling> those are nice though i would say a bit too nice for the subject hehe ^^

Ok so here is my WIP , i think it's the first time in COW , i'm not that into monster and creature , but it's quite fun to do actually ^^

@ActsOfBob - Thanks Actually... ... honestly I have not ever used texture i using two brushes mixed, my jungle brush plus my techno brush a little (Shape Dynamics, Scattering, Dual brush and Other Dynamics) and the result is that Instant forms :D I like the front part of your creature especially the head and neck :D

@scorge - Yes I know that i have this problem every time i want to macke a creature i get too much detail and before i realize i completely forget about anatomy :D I will try to do better and remember. Many thanks man.
And your creature is looking great :D How you did the flames?

@Jatari - Thanks man as i said before, i have this problem :D but Il give may best

@Wyna - Cool creature man I like it

ASAHI -SD- You're probably talking about the neck? I think you'll see that it's worked out in the next WIP. The neck is actually a light source. It's stretched and full of fire.

I haven't decided whether to add a background to this one. I was considering just doing a bit of floor. This will be my first "of-the-week" competition. I tried to do the CHOW, but I put so much focus into the environment and whatnot that I didn't finish in time (I work a lot). If my time is looking good I'll make sure and add something.

Thanks for the crit!

What the heck, I'll just post this to show you what I'm talking about.

lot's of evil in the tread today :) Lot's of cool concepts.
I'm going for something big and not so demonic. It's in the nature of these beasts to brees out of the planet core. They need to cool down to be able to eject the seeds that travel the universe to a new habitat. This is just to bad for the surface dwelling ecosystem.

Vaghauk

Vaghauk: There is no evil in nature. There is only evil in intent to do harm. (or so I think) These creatures are not doing this to harm what ever is "on top" they do it cos it's in their nature. And they are not aware of our suffering.

Cool to see how excited everyone is about this topic, I am too as we can really let our imaginations soar and not be dictated to about what to create exactly. Thanks MJ for hooking it up on the imaginative tip.

Duman: I like how you are doing your thumbs. What is that like some pen variable in Painter?

Jatari: Nice work but a lot of detail on a sketch that you’ll just paint over. Are you just submitting the sketch as your final?

Scorge: Good to see you rockin a creature as always man. I don’t know if I am feeling this entry as much as some of your past entrees though. I like the color palette that you’re rockin out on this one. I’ll look forward to your final post as always though.

ActsofBob: I like how this entry is coming along. Really nice work with the values and color and all that. I’d personally like to see you beef the body of your creature up more. Maybe make the hind legs larger or something so it looks most intimidating and dooming.

Dwinbotp: Simply said….FUCKING RAW ENTRY! This is one of the harder things I’ve seen you come with here yet on CA!

Lander: Good to see you on here again. I like the over all idea of what you have going on this round, but I would really like to see more the creature. Nice work as always though.

CW: I like the way you did your thumbs. Very cool!

A quick speed paint of the concept. The creature melts rock and eats the slag. I'm gonna lighten the background a bit and try and show that back leg.

Well a little different approach to my previous COW. I had a idea and kinda abandoned it here, because of how much time i have, so just kinda wingin' it this time. Red Hot Doom comes with multiple heads. I'll try to comment on everyone later tonight, great stuff so far.

Lander : you are totally right - of course i agree ! there is no evil in nature. ( thatīs why the buildings around the "magma-flower" should BURN more ;D
this is just my humble opinion : the "flower" looks more like its closing AFTER having released itīs seedīs - maybe it could be possible - through the "ondulations" of itīs tentacles to give more expession that itīs opening and ejecting seeds.
Somehow i imagine that it could be like one powerful seed after another - more like an strong "vulcanic erruption" than an peaceful corral-reef-blooming-like thing.... but well - thatīs just my imagination going wild....

It's too bad we can't use actual animals for our entries, I definitely would've went with the All Conquering Big Red Bunny of Doom...holy hand grenades of antioch need not apply.

790546

Ok...seriously. My gut said to go with a big rampaging lava monster cause well...that's what first came to mind (after the Bunny of Doom) but it's a little generic. I still have no clear idea on what I want to do, so more than likely what I end up with will (hopefully) be nothing like this.

Forgive me if I miss a few folks...there so many great entires:

Duman - Love the flow of ideas
ACB - looking good...little dark, but I like the overall design
Jatari - nice drawing, can't wait to see it in color
Scorge - nice image. Would like to see some sharp edges here and there on the flames...?
ActsofBob - Love this image. You're making me want to go with a 4 legged beastie myself :)
Dwinbotp - beef...it's what's for dinner. awesome.
Phoenicorn - I like the design...though I like the original one more.
Cyan - Great stuff. I love your sketches/concepts.
Bonedaddy - Nice design on this
Bradford - I like most of your concepts, the one you went with looks wicked.
Imageenation - nice design..maybe pinpoints of fire inside the sockets?
Vaghauk - maybe even more spikey? background needs a little more though
Hex - nice drawing, looking forward to the color
Sukizan - great creature, and a nice start.
Labrythine - Nice sketch...more!
TrickyNick - I really like this...though I'm kinda wanting to see some wingspan. Or is that too much?
Wyna - wow.
Mithril - to be honest, I like the sketch in the middle of your first set. That being said, I also like what you went with, though if you're going to reduce the claws, I'd maybe beef up the legs?
Asahi - great creature..love the spewage coming out of the belly.
Vampire Ninja - nice image, maybe some claws or longer teeth?
Lander - my fav so far...very original, looks awesome.
CW - I like the Slug of Doom image. My other choice would be the first sketch, top left...the crit tearing open the ground.
Mongrel - It's a little unclear, but what I see looks good so far.
Izer - sweet lines, I'm loving the movement of this piece, as well as the concept. Color please!!

Not necessarily a cute fluffy one, think a rabbit on growth hormones, steroids, coke and infused with lava blood. That should beat any old lava monster.

A quick sketch, Thought of going for a totally different approach. As I can't color it this will be it...
Idea is simple, chili peppers infested by some bug that can spread diseases amongst us humans: Red and hot, and thus also Doom for the killing part.

SHHH Duman! i slippedout whilst no one was watching ;)

Skuzian - your colour pallete is brilliant, that with the nice pose makes it actually irresistable, its one of those images i can look at for ages

Mythril Golem, your drawing style is enchanting, its got a real fairy tale sort of quality to it, brings to mind a more modern version of athur rackham.

Lander - i think i can make it out but further refining will help, so im not gonna crit until its a little more fleshed out.

Finally fixed and busting out some WIP, will be finished tomorrow!
pheonicorn much better form!
skullbeast really nasty looking!
bonedaddycash Looking great! Hope you can finish all that texturing tomorrow!
Hexism solid coloring, now finish it!
Sukizan A background isn't as important as seeing the whole composition...and getting the creature (the whole point) correct. If you want though make an easy magma ground with lava cracks and call it good! or something along those lines.
Wanna It's hard to see those sketches, I would try adjusting your scanner settings as well as use photo manipulation to make the black and white more separate (contrast)
KingKotas looks good nice final!
Re@per interesting concept! Can't wait for the final tomorrow.
Duman great choice on a creature, hope you finish it in time!
Searing Personally I agree with Duman, I felt the lava snake was the most interesting, however all are awesome. So Hope to see it FINISHED!

Hello everyone, really liking some of these flaming beasts this week, especially DWinbotP and Scorge.

Looks like we need a floating brainmonster though, which I'm happy to provide. Here's where it's at so far, I was drawing in my Harry Potter "death eater" sketchbook last night, and saw the ghost of the drawing on the other side, and it looked like -- well, a brainmonster jellyfish type thing. If anyone has some observations or suggestions, lay 'em on me. The "red hot" element will be more evident once I add the flaming humans who have been the victim of the stinging brain tenacle / feeler / stinger things.

Steve Somers
September 30th, 2009, 11:25 AM
Bonedaddycash - If I can make a suggestion, the left arm on your beast looks a little large / out of perspective, maybe shrink it about 15 - 20%? Or a background might help resolve how that part is reading, like if it was resting on a rock, or slain victim or something.

Duman, the background clashes with the ceature colors, Animals normally have the same colors as they're surrondings, and the colors feel too cool, it soud give off a warm feeling.

And then they'res the anatomy errors, like his Back leg and how he can support such a large head with only(bascially) 2feet without tilting forward.. But that's my 2cent not very good with animals my self.

i think this is final -
This magical lava being was created by Nephaestos, an powerfull fire magician.
When he conjured it, it existed an relative short time, exactly seven minutes, but this was enough to burn down the entire east wing of the magical university of Goch.Nephaestos himself surprisingly survived the catastropy by jumping out of the window of his laboratory and right in the Goch river. His burning beard shining in the dark. It is said that the lava being appears every year on that same day in an random location of the city. And during seven minutes it burns down everything around it.
Nephaestos was banned from the magical university and from the city of Goch and never seen since then.
Red Hot Doom is the name the people of Goch gave this terrible being.
Until today Goch still stands because every year the city is prepared for Red Hot Doomīs arrival.
Itīs the reason why the Gochians always keep an huge bucket filled with water in each room of their houses.

Hi everyone, this is the wip of my "desert symbiote", a creature who lives in the martian desert.
The giant martian cockroach to live needs to exploit the body of other living beings to which subtracts the awareness and vital energy. This union creates a new creature called the desert symbiote . Because of toxins emitted by the beetle, the victim of the symbiosis is disturbed by high fever that go over 50 degrees, and his body is covered with infected red sores.

Duman Looks way meanner and with bg familiarity! Looks like a Lava Drinker to me:) use it if you like it.
Steve Somers Yeah , mix them up, it looks nasty as it is but it could be nastier:)
Mythril Golem love the fowl design and creepy eye thingies. good stuff!
Memper looks like a cool stag beetle hybrid:)
DeathByChris cool critter! looking forward to the finished piece!
Korr Original take on the usual hot & spicy look.
ghul nice idea but usually we refrain from the humanoid looking creatures here at COW but keep at it and maybe throw in a few more ideas here and there:)
luvasquez cool! It kinda looks like my creature's little cousin:D
Cy-AN cool thumbs, I would have to choose one with a clear head form, sometimes simplicity reads a better design.
walnut cool progress, keep it up, it's looking good atm.reminds me of a flametoungue Kavu from Magic the gathering for some reason:)

No updates except for adding a few friends in the bg. I'm also thinking of a suitable name, and prol'y would end up calling it Ember Hooves.

Duman
October 1st, 2009, 08:19 PM
dwinbotp: Dude, no offense, but "Ember Hooves" does no justice to how absolutely awesome the creature is.
Try "Tauro de Dajes"
"Tauro Diabolus"
"monstrum incendia"
Which roughly translates to "The Bull of hell", "the demon bull" and "the fire monster".
But that latin versions sound much cooler.

DwinbotP - just noticed the extra firebeasts behind your main beast - nice touch dude, that is an outstanding piece.

lkjhgfdsa - Oh, so it's just a little quicky, huh? Just a doodle I suppose? Come on, that thing is fuckin SWEEET! Like some flaming lobster Tsunami. Awesome.

Death By Chris - Nice finish on that, I like seeing how you played with the placement of the limbs, really helps the flow of the piece and the believability. But, speaking as a Death Metal veteran, your Death Metal logo is far too legible ;)

Evolving eye - That is very cool, especially since it's such a different approach from some of the others. Some art director is bound to snap that up for something.

acb - I see where yours is going and I sure hope you finish it, it looks so bizzare and organic. Don't get too bogged down in details.

Sperling - That's a great drawing, I think you could've stopped short of the flames and still had a great piece - the bright colors and rider are a bit distracting from a really nice drawing.

N1va - glad to see another floating, disembodied organ - very cool.

Steve Somers

I didn't have the time or energy last night to mess around with my piece too much, so I ended up polishing the tentacle firespitter, mainly becuase the style was a different direction for me, a bit more graphic and illustrational.

But I did try a couple variatons which I'll post here for your amusement.

The background matte painting was something I spent 30 minutes or an hour on before deciding it was just a distraction from the creature. So I went with the old reliable kamikaze stripes.

Fuseboy
October 2nd, 2009, 10:48 AM
Okay, I've decided to go in a slightly different direction.

The Shame of Morton Village

Yes, I'll tell you, but only so you know what to do if it should happen again. The events of that year are a stain on our parish, and there's no joy in the telling.

We were deviled that whole year. That sulphurous fissure that the boys discovered up in the hills was a bad omen; the sickness among the cattle; our girls, vexed with sores and boils. Then the imp came - that shameless obscenity - leering at the miller's wife across the millpond, pissing on our thatch and throwing rocks at the dogs.

At first, none of us understood these things were all related. Of course, the women had kept the shame of what had happened to them secret for many months. How could they not? We don't even have a word for such a thing.

When it was found that the vicar's mother was pregnant, the outrage was too much to bear. The stinking crack through which that vile imp had come to us was found and stopped up with tar and stones. To think that we celebrated that night! But that was before the births.

My heart is heavy with the memory of what we were forced to do. To this day I cannot look upon my daughter for the shame of it. Many times I asked God why this was visited upon us. Did we not toil? Did we not pray? I regret that my faith has been sorely strained. Is it possible that we, by some hidden indiscretion, brought this upon ourselves?

Lander - I agree with fuseboy, that really pops now, and it's a unique concept that could've been really hard to understand without being painted so well. But if you've got a few minutes and feel like being super picky you could swap around a few of the buildings so the mirroring isn't as obvious. You did an amazing job though, this round is gonna be impossible to pick a favorite.

Fuseboy - That's such a funny idea. Everybody always makes fun of dogs when their "lipstick" pokes out, but your wolf beast will not have his lipstick be he butt of any jokes. Finally someone stands up for a little canine boner respect.

Death by Chris - next time a death metal band hits me up for some graphics, I'm sending them your way buddy :)

Cy-AN - sorry to hear about that. I once went through La Guardia security with conjunctivitis; it felt like sand was in there and I could hardly open my eye. I guess the airport security staff didn't like the look of it either, so they swabbed me down for explosives residue.

Here's what I've got!

I couldn't get to finish it, had to force my self to go on the computer and upload this lol.
I came down with this awful flu D: my head is pounding right now and the computer screen makes it worse ;__; why?! http://i38.tinypic.com/24fkxt4.jpg

Fuse - Nice image, nice concept...I love a great image even better when it has a great concept behind it.

Lander - Holy SIth! I loved this image when it was still in the WiP stage, the finish just blows me away. You realize I must file this one, right? :)

Cyan - Sorry about your eye bothering you so much. Just makes this image that much more impressive.

acb - I think some highlighting here and there just to define key areas and you're good to go.

Sukizan - get some rest, ya did good man.

That's up to you, I think; it doesn't seem to have any effect on the contest.

Cy-AN,
conjunctivitis is cured very simply with a damp, warm washcloth. Gentle pressure. Reheat with warm water often. Hope your red hot doom gets better mate.

Ouch Cy, that's some nasty pink eye, I'm having such bad allergies right now that sometimes my eyes are so red I feel like I might have a chronic pink eye. I hate the fall pollen season.

Ahh damn, looks like i mite have missed the deadline, I sorta rushed the last 2 days to pump this out. I went with a different style, and didn't plan it out too well, same with colors, so it took a bit longer to finish then i would have liked.

Lots of great posts this round, my apologies i haven't been active this week, commenting and crits and such, but i'll be sure to swing by the voting and comment on everyone's entries.

I mite try and submit in the finals, if Michael Jaecks doesn't allow it then that's cool, i have to make sure i finish on time, next time.

Great work everyone!

Well I just realized that I haven't even posted in here yet so I thought I'd throw out a WIP of my finished red hot doom.
