Sort of shows what a fragile thing freedom of information is. "He who controls the past..."

I met a Chinese guy online once who thought that the Tienanmen Square massacre was anti-Chinese propaganda put out by the U.S. I've wondered since if that is the prevailing notion there.

Every nation has their own skeletons and delusions. From what I understand there's a conservative wing in Japan that refuses to acknowledge the Nanking Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre), Iranian President Ahmadinejad is catching heat for declaring the Holocaust as a myth, the USA only marginally recognizes the Armenian Genocide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_Genocide) (and even then is loath to use the term "genocide"), et cetera.

Though I cannot deny, the lengths that the Chinese government goes in censorship is... well extreme.

Edit: Just so it's clear, I'm not apologizing for China. I'm just, non-pulsed. I've read enough history to be completely unsurprised by this.

@jcpahl - I'm willing to bet that one Chinese man you talked with is only one of millions that think Tiananmen Square is anti-Chinese propaganda created by the U.S. On another note, you are absolutely right:

@ Anid Maro - Great references! I'm honestly a little surprised to see that someone else has heard of the Armenian Genocide. I recently did a report that covered part of the massacre. I wish it was a topic that schools would touch base with, considering its resemblance with the Holocaust.

I'm not really surprised at China for censoring its media. I'm surprised Google has gone along with China's censorship of its media.

One of the biggest disservices we have done to technology is allow the internet to be controlled in such a way. A country shouldn't be able to decide what information comes through the internet. The internet is supposed to be the freest form of information transfer. No censors, no control, no limits. It's never going to be like that though. Humans just won't let it happen.
