Spartan Camp #106 - 50 gestures + Optional Study of "Male figure+ Female figure"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 27th of September.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional Study of "Male + Female figure", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study: The goal is comparison. What sets male and female figures apart? Think proportion, shape, musculature, anatomy. Reference encouraged. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
:muscle: Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!! :muscle:

This week I've mostly been doing landscape-related drawing (bought a Hamm book on that topic also, "Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and seascapes") and there probably will be many nature-related drawings in my sketchbook for a while. Will of course post any worthwile figurative sketches here though. :-)
Drew this sketch of actress Catherine Zeta-Jones (from "Traffic") today. Partly flawed it's another ballpoint one:

Don't know if I can get 50 done by then but I'll try.

Ended up doing too many quick master/RL studies and simplified figures to even bother to try and scan it all. Show you guys a more finished sketch of Johnny Depp instead.
Hamm encourages "the student" to practice with pencil. I've mostly been using cheap ballpoint lately. Seems a pencil can give a more varied line quality and more subtle nuances - so that should be preferred, or what do you think?

Mindbendermind; Those portraits are tough as hell, but a good practice. I'd agree with Hamm there by the way. Ï'm using pencil mostly because I enjoy trying out different ways of shading, line quality, shapes and textures that result from handling the pencil differently. I don't feel I have much control of it yet, but yea there's a lot of variation. But I gotta admit pen is probably great for planning more confident lines, and really focused drawing. Since there is no way back. Aside from that, I'm guessing much of it is probably preference?
Wyna ; That's no problem, 50 can be off-putting at first. I think you've got some real interesting sketches there though, Id enjoy seeing more. Pretty figurative poses, but you seem to have a very clear idea of where you're going. Do you just plan your lines real carefully?
Didn't get the 50 done myself, got stuck in some longer studies which I enjoyed.

Yep, tough with a frustrating result - but fun. Maybe will come in periods - back in a "pencil period" at the moment. Thanks for always giving such valuable feedback.
Really like those longer studies of yours - believe it's valuable to sometimes keep polishing the same rock until it's smooth before reaching for the next. :)

Have to say, I love how you draw hands. Also you have some great looking torsos and shoulders in there.
I don't plan my lines super carefully, I'm usually just winging it.
