I am really excited about this game like most people and decided to do some fan art to compliment my interest in this game.
Here is a quick concept sketch of a monster head from a doom 3 screenshot which you can also see from what I based this concept off of.
From Jasons contructive crits on lighting in my last post I took his words seriously and this concept sketch is basically just an experiment in light.
Most of my work basically involves surrounding the character in a dark line, but I want to break away from this cartoonish level and create 'real' concepts.
I am still not 100% happy with the overall finish of this head but like I aformentioned it was just an experiment with lighting, etc.
C&C appreciated.

that looks cool man, still looks sorta cartoon-like though...i think darker shadows and lighter highlights would do alot for ya if yer experiementing with difforent lighting. especially on the eye ball, i think it would look more "wet" if you had a small hard highlight on it.
those are my crits. but keep it up, looks great.

Yeah, agreed with Clodhopper on the eye, though I think you should do more than just one hard hilite on it. Like, you don't have just one light source, and besides, doing that eye more wet or slimey would also give it more life. Nice transparency on the top of the head.
It's a bit odd though the chin seems to be in a profile, a bit off.

Lono: Thanks for the comment yo! My sig looks like a cock penatrating an orifice huh? Actually, I never saw that to be honest! I bet you were looking at porno before you came to Conceptart.org and stumbled upon this picture ;)
Anywayz, I do now see my sig sorta looks like an upside down cock and balls pentrating a 'perfect' circular orifice. Hah! That looks cool anywayz, I like it now! ;)
Clodhopper & Morphine: Thanks for crits and comments. I actually did put a white highlight on its eye but it just didn't seem right. For instance, if I was going to put a highlight on his eye then I would have to put sharper little highlights on the rest of his head such as the top of his skull and his gums, teeth, etc. Hhhm, maybe if I blend the highlight into his eye then it would look better. Aahh, I also don't care if it still looks cartoonish still, I guess everyone has their own definitive style that you just can't get rid of! ;)
I also kinda see what you mean by the chin morphine. I will try and refigure that as well. Anywayz, it is an alien/demon figure, so you would expect a perfect handsome chin from a creature would you?:p
I am going to have another go at another creature I had in mind too. Back to my cave!

It's a fantastic start. I like the anatomy and the colors and your abilitiy to render lighting is starting to take shape.
The next thing to start thinkng about is using your lights and shadows to define the planes of the figure. By mapping out your shapes you can see the shape of the figure you've drawn in space and as a bonus it also helps to keep the perspective of the piece in check.
Please pardon the overpaint but I've taken the liberty of going in and defining the major planes of your bust to better illustrate my point. Now granted they may not be the same planes that you had in mind for your creature but like I said they're there to illustrate my point.

See how defining the planes has added volume depth and subsequently believability to your creature? Now, the real trick is instead of doing this with a crappily drawn grid try doing it by shading the planes of the figure to match their orientation to the light source.
Hope that helps some. Like I said before, you've got a great start, now you just need to bring it on home.
Oh yeah, and I added the specular highlight to the eyeball just for kicks.

Thanks for the advice Imp, I will definately take what you said about defining the planes of my figure in terms of light to heed. I have been actually busy with household chores today but now I can see the relavance of adding a sharp highlight to the eye from your overpainting. I think I will add that in there then and touch the other highlights just a little more.
Cheers.:chug:

Hmm looks good, bit too alien looking though, the doom creatures are demons and the undead.
Anyway keep it up.
The leak rocked and the full game will be even better.

Thanks for crits and comments guys.
Holy shit dodowa, how fucking realistic are those doom3 screenshots in that link you posted! That marine has to be the most realistic model I have ever seen in a game. Damn, this game is gonna rock so bad!:evilbat:
