An attempt at doing creature design. I was trying to design a creepy creature that will work for an live action film.
I tried to keep the shapes a little unclear so it takes you an extra second too read it.
The idea is that if we don't understand it, it moves fast toward us and looks threatening, the creature might be more scary to us. Kind of how I feel about cockroaches :)
The design is not finished yet as the shapes are a little too busy. I am not planning to work on this image more, but might sketch up a new one instead.
I like the general concept, but don't think I execute it successfully. Please feel free to crit away if you see any thing I can do to improve it. Thanks :)

Cool concept, i like it alot. I like all the functions and different modes it has- they seem like they could probably work.
The main renderings could be clearer though, theres too much black, not enough details :)

Love the design and the ideas about the changing light. I like the sheet layour aswell.
One thing which is just my personal opinion is that i dont like the idea of aleins using guns and grenades jsut doesnt fit. specaily the design you got going. Anyway up to you.

Ok heres my input hope it is to some use
The idea about being able to roll when airdrop is good a
nd I was thinking that you should explore that feature
a little more, maybe like this:
It doesnt seem that agile except in a headon assault.
But Iguess it has an organic armor so that it will be able
to bend its armor and shape it a little bit more into a ball
(than you have showed us in your pics). This making it
able to roll into a really thight ball and use it as a way of
fast movement and protection.
I was thinking like this the alien rolls in like a ball
then when it just at the human
soldier etc it expand very quickly into fighting stance hence from a small ball
(small compared to its size)into that big creature just scaring the shit out of the soldiers.
This I think is according to your
concept fast moving and we dont know how it really looks like
and the ones that survives just have quick glimpses of
its "real" shape leaving a lot to scary imagination.
Ok some questions:
Are you going to do different armors
because the armor seems like an armor to the "cannonfodder"

I saw the same thing... it's not... "cool" enough. But when i saw the yellow'ish things on its back, i thought that extending them over the body.. like some sort of tattoo, it would seem more 'dangerous' or 'fast'.. or yea.. just COOL.

People have suggested some really cool things, but I like it a lot the way it is. Just like you said, its not perfect, but cuz it isn't theres something cool about that. It reminds me of the creatures in mimic. It seems to fit in with that same family of creature.
One thing I dont like to much is the fact that he has a gun holster. I know you didnt put it in, but I dont think a weapon fits in with this creature. (imo)
great job!

nice one Kevin.
i'll drop some feedback - in case it helps.
1 - I hate the simetry in the front view.
2 - The head is still Alien (movie) like. And if you want to be obscure, you shouldn't put up a head there anyway.
Why don't you place it's head somewhere near the back, and under the bely, and upside-down? The face shouldn't be in the front always, right?.
I am lately fascinated by deep-sea creatures - there brother you can see scary and ORICILAN as hell creatures. That's a super starting point. And flashy enough for a SF movie (they even have neon colors :D )

Just trying to help and inspire you - that's my job :)

Thanks for the great suggestions!! I agree with the holster thing, I have too much ideas going on in the design that I couldn't make up my mind on the direction. It needs to be simplified a lot more.
I like the idea of it wrapping into a tighter ball and don't revieal it self till it is up close to the enemy. Thanks for the suggestion Mindflaw!
BTW, what is the Cannonfodder armor design? I haven't seen it, but would like to find out about it. Let me know where I can find it's images. Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind when designing creatures for live action is that it should be buildable, will a person have to sit inside? Or will it be a puppet?
Another thing about creature design is does it look real? for instance, the back leg looks good, but the front has an extra joint in it and I don't see its purpose.
also the head can't look up with the kneck armor where it is.
In your second set I would develop the white one on the top and the second from the right on the bottom. I would make the inside legs smaller and more crawfish like.
Looking good but as was mentioned try and stay away from the 'alien' look which has become such a huge part of our popular culture. It will be associated right away as I learned today with one of my concepts :P and if you draw from real life creatures and modify them it will look a lot more realistic. Give it a try.
Looking good.

It is an awesome looking design in my book, just needs some more tweaking to send it over the top maybe?
I would dump the alien looking extention of its head for the obvious recognition factor and work a bit on the articulation of the front forelegs, they tend to look very rigid, not very agile, and they look like they need phalanges of some sort.
I like the elder the best, especially because the tenacles answer the question of how it holds stuff, his design just seems more followed thru on. I also love the dark carapace, I like the idea of how it is hard to register what the hell it is.
I keep thinking low light scene, either wet or very reflective carapace so all you see is black odd shape with a bunch of highlights that only do more to confuse the eye...
It is good and menacing as hell though
