I'm interested in seeing how much you have progressed with life drawing/anatomy, it might just inspire me to improve my own skill (or lack thereof) with it as well.

hey there man, great digital work! you seem to be doing good with those digital studies, keep those up. as far as the pencil stuff goes, i would just really focus on simple proportions at the moment. try to guage how big the head is compared to the rest of the body, or how far the arms come down on the body, do alot of sketches of this type, but most importantly OBSERVE these things, really try and focus on storing these things into your memory. it will come in handy later on, when your trying to build figures from memory. theres tons of references on human anatomy, and proportions in the forums section, under references. but i would get a book too, something by andrew loomis, or burne hogarth might be good to start out with, then once you become more familiar with proportions, and general shapes of the figure, you may want to delve into some george bridgeman, his book on anatomy "the complete guide to drawing from life" is like my bible. but just keep studying, keep drawing, keep observing, and keep working hard!! youll get there in no time!

thanks for the advice, I have all of those books and then some, and have been delving through bridgman, the ones I posted are from photographic studies however. I've also taken a life drawing class and am probably gonna take another. You would think I'd be better but I was pretty awful when I started, lol

I have to say, I like your painting a lot. Only thing bad about them is the Composition. I'd recommend this (http://www.amazon.com/Art-Tangled-Jeff-Kurtti/dp/0811875555/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292320514&sr=8-1). I've heard it's good for storyboarding and composition.

As for your figures, your proportions are off by a lot.

This is only a suggestion but it's helped a lot of people:

Try using Andrew Loomis' Figure Drawing for All It's Worth as a start for anatomy. Do NOT get stuck doing Loomis only though, just try his method for bodies.

Also, for facial features, try to combine them into a face instead of piece by piece, this helps you learn propotions for the human face and they better your faces.

Last thing: learn the skull. It will greatly help your form in your faces.

hm, you've got a strange contrast going on between your digital paintings (they're good), and your pencils, which are quite a bit off.

looking at your pencils in particular i'd say you're lacking solid foundations - you don't seem to do any construction or development of your forms at all. you'll have to work on that, otherwise you're going to get badly stuck.
It's harder to tell with your photoshop drawings because there it's much easier to gloss over mistakes with fancy brushes and colours, but your pencils are usually where your true skill shines through.

loomis is a good recommendation, have a look at how he constructs things in perspective and from primitives. that's the very basics of drawing. hogarth is good for that too, altho his distinct style is hard to understand.
there's also a process every drawing goes through, from very faint "gesture" lines to a blocking stage of major shapes to more refined final shapes. the idea is to build up a drawing over time so you can correct at every step.

another tip i think might be useful: always consider the whole drawing. sounds obvious, but most proportion and perspective issues happen when you're drawing one area without considering the whole drawing. for example you might draw part of the head, and get really into it and get excited, but when you're done with it you look at the rest of the body and realise the head was way too small all along. this takes some practice but is incredibly important! with every line you make, consider what it does to the drawing as a whole.

finally, I think you can improve a ton by watching your lines! you tend to make lots of scribbly hesitant lines to make up your drawings, it looks very scratchy. have a look at mike mattesi's blog (or book, "force"), you'll see what you can achieve with confident, strong lines instead. you'll need to develop your line quality in order to convey weight, force, intent, or direction in your drawings

phew, that could've easily turned into a really long post :P

I hope you don't mind me criticising your work for that long, keep drawing!

NeonDuck, trout mix: I downloaded all of the andrew loomis books, is it true they're out of print? I also have a paper edition for bridgman but all his figures are super beef cakes and don't really look "normal" (they're still excellent drawings) but he must be the michelangelo of the figure drawing world, lol

I appreciate that you guys have taken the time to go through such a critique, probably the most insightful things I've heard in some time. Other art forums I get nothing but good jobs because my paintings far exceed my drawings (on account I've done far more painting study and practice than I have drawing, lol)

I hope to eventually catch my drawing up to speed, I've also been browsing amazon for some books that may inspire me and give insight on figure drawing & art in general

Any other names, links, and resources are always appreciated, and insight on what I am doing wrong is very appreciated.

I wish I could draw with line worth a damn digitally, I'm gonna run out of paper lol

As others have recommended the classics, I'll throw one out:

Get Hampton's (http://www.amazon.com/Figure-Drawing-Invention-Michael-Hampton/dp/0615272819/ref=sr_1_4_title_0_main?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1290332455&sr=1-4) book on figure invention, that'll help you loads. Wish I had it when I first started, would've saved me a significant amount of time on learning how to draw and construct figures, both from real life and imagination.

Anyway, your environ in your first post has killer atmosphere. You later environs show good promise. Keep it up!

just continue to struggle! eventually you get there... but maybe you should look at some bridgman or vilppu for proportions of the body and such instead of doing it from photos, unless you have the possibility to go to lifedrawings with an instructor to help you out.
keep it up! :)

Your environments are just great! Cool colours and the brushstrokes look confident. I miss that in the human figure studies. And maybe the computer is not the best thing for making sketches. The lines in the pencil sketches look much better.
And some people said it already: keep an eye on the proportions. Maybe you can use a grid to get the basic proportions right before going on working on shadows, hightlights and so on. Or draw and paint it like always and when lay it over the original to see the problems for yourself. Sharpen your eyes foru your own flaws

obier
July 23rd, 2011, 05:33 AM
I'd recommend you to get a big roll of paper and chalk for drawing. And start drawing masses instead of lines - it's way easier method to study proportions. It's important to observe and compare the proportions to each other(e.g how long is the head compared to the torso, how wide are shoulders compared to the hips and how big mass takes up the head compared to the torso - i mean how many heads fit into the ribcage, into the waist area etc.).I also recommend not to measure only with your eye, but also with a pencil or what not.About Loomis i think it might be too much for you to handle right now, but if you feel it helps - then keep doing it.I also rcmnd you to look up riley's method of drawing- there are also videos about it in the youtube.

I really like your enviros and your colors look solid, too.
Your figures however need some work.
Your studies look a bit wonky, especially the placement of the eyes continues to be a problem throughout your SB.
Maybe you shouldn't go straight to color in your stuides and construct the figures instead of copying values.

Ellipses
July 30th, 2011, 12:57 PM
my faces struggle every single time. I simply do not understand construction, no matter how many times I go over it. I am trapped in this battle of "well, if you construct it with a set method, you will have the same head every time!" and thats about where I get lost. I am starting to see a little improvement, and sometimes I just get lucky - I really need to put them in like a lineup in chronological order to further study these results.. but I find the more I simplify the shapes, colors, and values (because I CANNOT draw with line, lol, I just have to paint em) the better they turn out - I find the boldness portrays the face adequately, without being overly difficult making me RAGE QUIT

I try to do a portrait study every day but it is hard to stay on track, and I find my environments suffer without sufficient attention to their upkeep. Poor enviros :(

I feel some parts of my studies work once in a while, other times they are just bad, usually the faces are very bad

It seems like with a lot of your figure and anatomy studies you maybe aren't spending much time on them. A lot of them seem to be off, like being too short or at an angle or just something doesn't seem right with it. Take your time. Take the time to look at your studies and copy it the exact way you see it. Same goes with the digital drawings of girls. A lot of them had very scribbled alrge areas of color for a body, but then had a miniature sized face. Take your time with it all, if something doesn't seem right then fix it before you jump in to detail.

On your next digital study of a girl try sticking to a minimum brush size and try not to zoom in during it at all. Focus on the color and the value on the figure in large areas and then you can slowly start refining from there. Your environments look very very nice, I think if you could learn to take the time to refine your studies like you take the time to work on your environments then you could make some pretty amazing stuff.

Also, do you flip the canvas occasionally while you paint?

Color is definitely your forte. You could be a very good painter. However your lines need work. I also recommend Mattesi's book.Aso John H. Vanderpoel's "The Human Figure" is really good.

I hated his book - I copied the drawings several times, which were okay, but the text in the book was garbage IMO, way too wordy / trying to sound intelligent but just coming across as pretentious - if you are trying to teach a subject from ground up, its safe to assume your reader is starting at the ground - and therefore should be fairly simply worded.

I much prefer the writing styles of bridgman and loomis, which are far more to the point. Vanderpoel IMO is not worth the $2.50+shipping it costs on amazon =P

I'm sure you've heard this already but, your environments and background paintings are far more superb compared to your humans and anatomy. I'm actually impressed with your approach towards environmental stuff.

Despite the huge contrast in capabilities, I feel your efforts to study both are equally applied!

You're like the exact opposite of me: I suck at drawing enviros but I'm okay drawing figures/people. So, if you want to get better at drawing people, I'd say learn the proportions, and do a bunch of studies before drawing from imagination (I'm not saying you shouldn't draw from imagination, but you should have a solid knowledge). Good luck and keep drawing more awesome environments as well!

Ps: I agree, it is hard to get comments...unless your SB has 5 stars :P

I've only looked at the last page, so keep that in mind that I don't know where you've come from.

I looks to me that you have a tendency to blur your edges quite a lot on your drawings of humans, where your comfort shows more clearly in the environment drawings. You are much more likely to have a sharp, hard edge in a forest than you are to clearly delineate the face or hair. Don't forget that people aren't especially furry. We're rather smooth for the most part, so a choppy blurry edge isn't really appropriate for us.

Maybe keep an eye on the shapes of your shadows and light, and try to simplify them down to fewer values, then use those values to make a clearer outline. Simplify, simplify!

Thanks for the response guys:

Adrianaor: I actually don't draw figures from imagination =P I have only done studies, mostly of anatomy / figure drawing books and occassionally photos. And its definitely difficult to get a response from this site =P

Tulokyn: You have a good point about my figures, but its mostly because I don't finish them - I use the same technique of working blurry, gestural, and very brushy, into more refined forms, which is the same way I work on enviros - I would probably be better off starting with line drawings, I just dislike line drawings, lol. Thanks for your input, I will try pushing more finished edge decisions.
