A primer of some kind is recommended before painting it (IF you decide to paint it). A grey is a "default" color, but those colors on the maquettes in your link can be found in the spray paint aisle as well. Most companies keep it simple and dont color the maquettes because colors have already been decided by others in the company. ( or will be decided by someone other than the maquette artist) the neutral color also keeps it easier to see smaller details.
Good luck!!

it looks like they are using a grey super sculpy. I found some at a local crafts store, it's pretty good stuff to work with. I normaly mix the grey and the flesh color sculpy, it gives it a nice consistancy. oh yeah, it costs more than the regular super sculpy

My guess would be that the material is plasticine... or however you spell it... not sculpey. Plasticine is that exact color... it could also be WED clay... though that's usually more brown in color if I remember correctly.

sculpy has a new grey clay, that a lot of figure sculptors are using and it looks just like that stuff.
