Skin tone...??
Image091
miycko
September 25th, 2009, 11:03 AM
the one in the middle is very nice :) try not to use white for highlights, instead use a lighter colour of the mid tone, it's something i struggle with as well
wakoes
September 25th, 2009, 05:15 PM
@miycko: thanks, and actually it wasn't white is suppose to be light brown, and actually it easy to do the skin tone, just mixing play between dark and light colorand yet it also it a bit tricky because it we do wrong sometime the skin will look plain and dull, the hard part is to make the skin more realistic, some say just apply the skin texture from the some image put it as a layer then change it the layer property to overlay...
but I don't know, I done it sometime, and i'm still unsatisfied with the result although it did look realistic, but I just feel like cheating.
do you remember one of Randis drawing on the contest that shown the detail that include the skin texture, man that's so awesome... I wish I do like he did:dad:
anyway here another of my fast drawing that I done it last nigh before I went to sleep.. and yep I still focus on skin ... skin .. aaaaaa

September 28th, 2009, 02:09 AM
You kindof just seem to be painting any darks and mids for skin and then adding these little highlights everywhere? That's not really how skin works most of the time, you might want to do some studies from photos. Also make sure you're using accurate values when doing so :) Keep it up

You seem to have very good skills mate. The thing i see in almost all of your works(these on black background basically) is the white outlines here and there.
Maybe you could try letting your forms step out of the shadows instead of Pasted over a black surface. The last one is coming out from the shadows hehe :D

Thats the hardcore spirit lol :P
Btw damn i am laughing inside me cause you get some interesting values with some strange brushtrokes that make some parts totally awesome. The arm in post #27 is great.I am not sure about the very saturated shadow there. How strong is the light that makes the blood to lend some color to the shadowed skintone?
Keep it up mate
wakoes
October 11th, 2009, 02:00 PM
@kingkostas: I don't know why I have that spirit yesterday, hmm maybe it was come from both you and SamC word that really encourage me to practice even more:D
and ... I'm not quite understand what you saying (hiks sorry for my poor english:nohope: ) and I'm not really knowing all that technical digital drawing stuff which I'm really eager to learn it so maybe I will try to explain it (although I know that I'm not very good in explain thing :P )from what I know.. basically what I do its using several layer, and for shadowed skin usually what i did it by using a same color with the skin but the layer property i change it to color burn
and i draw like how people draw using charcoal hmm like draw some line the smudge it with the finger basically what i do it same thing except in i do using pen and smudge tool on CS ...(hiks i hope it can explain well :dad: )
and for the light thing I'm not sure what you mean but that why I eager to learn more from you and other artist in here :yayca:
and today I woke up and the light was out I mean there's no electricity and it just turn back on couple minute ago...
and here some what i do to spend my time under the kerosene light :P
done it on A4 and A3 paper I reduce it to 1024X768
oh and the last one is an old sketch that I done couple year ago when I was working as a drafter on one of architecture and design company. and if i remember correctly this sketches it suppose to be a wall relief on the private swimming pool ( but it never made it, since I thing it away over the client budget :P)

You are doing great.
I dont have time to comment a lot of words so here what i think will help you if you study them a little
Just keep reading them till you understand them(dont copy them, without understanding them)
http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm
edges
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913
Moreover try to achieve(to make) the results that the color burn layer provides you,in normal layer. And try not to use smudge. The use of Alt+click(picker) is the best thing to work as much as you want in blendings and such.
Keep up the good work :)

Nice sketch pad. Maya work looks great....it would be interesting to see how it looks when the polys get dropped for game format. That all comes in time.
I like the boldness of the lighting. However, I think someone mentioned this before, if you are trying to show lighting versus backlighting ...you gotta keep'em separated. It seems both sides of you characters are lit with all different for,s of light and there is no uniformity.
Keep at it

Oh, great mechs :O and also nice material study on #17, with the water drops :). for the girls /people/portraits, looking good!
If you're doing a speed paint of a person don't bother penciling in the lines, just block the shape out and refine the shape till it looks right. My meaning is, if your sketch isn't perfect, it's usually no good because you might get stuck trying to fill out the sketch when the shape doesn't fit. That's one common method anyway :0, anyway, keep it up!

Hey, thanks for visiting my sb - returning the favour :)
Cool wip you have there, but mind the volume of the eyes! In general, your mecha work is great and your girls hot, but sometimes they risk looking too soft and with too much light everywhere, I think you could benefit from trying to up contrast and use sharper edges maybe?
I really like the painterly feel in many of your pieces, and your use of color in skintones is awesome. Keep it up!

November 5th, 2009, 05:18 AM
Your pencil stuff is coming along nicely - but the digital ones are problematic. One of the main problem is that you use very different sized brushes on the same pic, which makes the whole pic look incoherent. Try to block in the big masses first with a large brush and then gradually make the brush size smaller. You should only switch to a smaller brush if you can't add more details to the pic with the larger ones. I also can see some coloring issues here, but thats another thing you shouldn't focus on till you get confident with grayscale rendering, shading and all that kinda stuff.
Edit: Whoops, I missed the last page. Some really cool anatomy studies here. Keep 'em coming man!

The digital painting looks good too. Just try to not loose everything up. If I look at it now, it seems to be very undefined. That's good at some parts, but not at all parts. Render out the focus point with sharp edges and clear contrast. But I can also see some improvement you gained from the video I posted earlier, nice job! Also, sweet brushes, but try not to overdo it with texture! Too much texture may distract from the image! Just think of it like money! Spend it wisely.

your colors are still kinda crazy, but this (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=822436&stc=1&d=1257516887) is a good example of how to turn an eye-hurting color schem (http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs50/f/2009/310/3/3/image145_self_portrait_by_Wakoe.jpg)e into a tolerabel one.
I second Arestocrat on the tighten up thing - you should work more on solid forms - especially on contours. Solid contours make even loosely detailed renderings more appealing. And one more thing: You use too much black in your digis. I'd suggest that you should experiment with not so intense contrast or pictures with only fully saturated colors (with - lets say - only colors of the 50< value range in HSV color system). Hope that helps.

About the pencils: Try to be less loose and render things with less random lines and scriblings. Also: try to be more specific when rendering shadows. You try to draw very smooth gradients and draw some shade everywhere but you end up with sketches that have so many shades on them that they look flat - almost like they weren't shaded at all. There's a really good tutorial on figure drawing here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14035). I'd suggest that you should follow the steps of it on the same pic or another strong lit one. the whole stuff is very useful but step3 and step4 shows everything that you need to know about clean lines and hard shading.
About the astronaut guy. Same issue here that I've already mentioned. Those strong whites and strong blacks on the same piece. Try to avoid this. The first step in the animgif looks okay. I'd like to see those steps in separate pictures to give a more detailed crit on your method.
(The other thing that's bugging me is the lack of real coloring. The whole pic looks kinda pale - like you couldn't decide whether you should color it or not.)
Keep on practicing!

Well, I can see some misconceptions here.
#1: You say that you rarely use that tutorial on clear rendering and shadow blocking, cause you focus on digi painting. As far as I know clear contours and shading basics aren't only for traditional draftsmen. On the other hand you can create pencil-like brushes in Photoshop (at least I created one for myself, it's pretty easy: take a flat, round brush, set size variation to pressure, minimum diamater to 0%, set opacity to pen pressure, set flow to pen pressure; set size to 3 pts and here ya go, your digital pencil), so you can create pencil drawings digitally, SO you can use everything written in that tutorial to create a basic lineart. Later on you can use a flat brush to define shaded areas. After that you can overlay color and do all the crazy stuff you'd like to. Long story short: That tutorial is for you and for every one of us. Take it, try it, use it. ;)
#2: You say you only used two colors, blue and yellow. I checked the pic and the luminosity of the background is 2 or three, so practically it's black. The luminosity of the hand is almost 200 so - okay, it's not totall white, but next to the chest area which has a luminosity of 10 it looks white because of the high contrast. My point was that you should avoid this high contrast or at least you should decide whether your pic will be a high key one or a low key one (http://www.diyphotography.net/lighting-high-key-and-low-key). You shouldn't cover large areas with darks and large areas with brights on the same pic.
About your recent stuff:
This (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=830525&stc=1&d=1258333140) looks kinda nice. There are some issues with the face, but I like the subtle shades and highlights. This one (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=830533&stc=1&d=1258333340)looks also okay, mainly for the same reason. They both use simple color schemes with one primary color and not too much contrast. You've (unintentionally?) avoided the aformentioned high contrast issue. Not like in this case (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=830528&stc=1&d=1258333240). You used large portions of black and white on the same pic and it doesn't look right. A useful rule of thumb: You should avoid using black for shading human skin unless the surounding environment is dark with no primary and secondary light sources (in this pic the floor is a large bright secondary light source which you should consider)
Keep on sketchin'! :yayca:

yes most of my drawing I done on Painter and I use tinting, pencil and acrylic brushes on that drawing
@Novbert:
I understand what you mean:D
what I do on most of my pencil sketches, is just try to capture the pose and movement around me, that why those sketches look crappy and like wild line all over drawing:rocker:. and also thank you for the tips for that brush making:D , I have one of my own too.
#2 Ok its three then :tihi: and thank you for the advice and the link I will keep it in mind, I will remind me my self to avoid it nest time:yayca:
About your recent stuff:
This looks kinda nice. There are some issues with the face, but I like the subtle shades and highlights. This one looks also okay, mainly for the same reason. They both use simple color schemes with one primary color and not too much contrast. You've (unintentionally?) avoided the aformentioned high contrast issue. Not like in this case. You used large portions of black and white on the same pic and it doesn't look right. A useful rule of thumb: You should avoid using black for shading human skin unless the surounding environment is dark with no primary and secondary light sources (in this pic the floor is a large bright secondary light source which you should consider)
I was try to understand some sharp and soft edges issue plus little bit about value and light direction
on this one I was practicing sharp and soft edges with single source of light
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=830524&stc=1&d=1258332974
on this one I was try to understand how light behave that way you'll see that a lot of highlight oh that object
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=830525&stc=1&d=1258333140
On this one I was try it on complicated object
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=830528&stc=1&d=1258333240
and this one it just scrapies that I usually do before I start drawing yes just 5 min sketchies
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=830539&stc=1&d=1258333649
and that robot thingy is my personal project well actually I just try to draw something for my wallpaper :tihi:
anyway thank youuu so much for spare your time to teach a noobs like me, it mean a lot for me :yayca:
@kingkostas:
i see that even in your sketches you love doing some smudging(maybe with your finger or something)
yes sometimes :tihi: but much of the time I use tissue or paper towel that I roll it up :tihi: ( I Learn it from old portrait painter that used to live next to my house :lifedrawing:)
i prefer the ones that you shade with hatching(parallel lines) I will try to do that more often
thank youuuuu and I'll do ma best :yayca:
@miycko: thank you mate :tihi:

Great potential really. You are improving a lot.
haha i am so glad you research things like you did with the sphere etc. and i wanna thank you.Lovely things in these updates. The rendering is getting less messy.
Btw in the ballerin.Dont use a lot of black in the shadows. It makes it dull
In the shadow part take a darker value of the same hue+(take it toward left, for colder shadows=if you have warm light source/ & and the opposite for cold light source) and use this color for shadow
Keep going

I really like the old skool sci-fi feel the suit and button piece has, very nice. It was also interesting to see the process animation. You seem to be sketching mad too, I like the cross hatching you got going on. I can't give you much advice, seeing as you are improving all the time. :)
Maybe work on making the characters pop out more by giving them really sharp and strong edges, for example on the robot, it kinda has a soft edge so it seems plushy.
Keep it up.

Very good. I see since the last time you have eased up on multicolors from multi directions and used better lighting techniques.
Be careful with some sketch work, make sure you adjust the levels so it is dark enough an old man like myself can see it.
Keep cracking

@kingkostas:thank youu so much kingkostas, I will try do better next time :yayca:
and the reason that I do that last woman painting with more darker or too much black on it it because for some narrow minded ppl here in Indonesia it consider as a porn >< (maybe I should practice on fluid too, then next time I'll be able draw some cloth on it:dad:)
@liquidjack: thanks you liquidjack I aware on that head proportion stuff as you say, maybe it because usually my my current painting usually got some influence from my previous one, and usually that head become too big when I start painting some manga stuff, I ll do more practice so I be able do better next time
anyway since I think most of the ppl here more open minded maybe it alright if I post it here

December 10th, 2009, 06:02 PM
hehehehe :) i understand.
Now, i think all the graduations(from shadow to light) are very smooth or "round"
Keep working anyway.Maybe some photostudies(greyscale with not very contrast so that you will have less extreme blacks in there) and some life study of some items in your desk or whatever will help you with some things.
Keep up the good work

hi mate. The woman comes nice.Ok i see a lot of blurring or maybe smudging. If you do that it will be good to reduce it.Its not that we want to see each blending done full smoothly. In the first phase yea it gives the look "wow that looks like real" but soon we realize that it looks dull and boring and blured. You are doing great dont worry, i am just reminding things here hehe
Nice studies.Dont lose yourself with the muscles but give attention to the proportions and the basic masses of the body (head, chest, pelvis)
keep going mate

@kingkostas: hmm I done it on cardboard with marker, water color, pen, acrylic and low pressure airbrush, King:dad: and the original size was A3 and i think it a bit hard to smudging on acrylic painting king :( and yes I did edit it with CS3 for resizing and retouch it little bit to remove that cardboard texture and the it a bit dark( I know and aware that these day we can achieve it this kinda painting on digi and a lot of software that can help us to do it ) , and i was inspired by Pascal Chove painting.
Anyway thank youuuuu so much for the advice kingkostas, and for the proportions I will keep it in mind kingkostas:) I will do better next time :yayca:
