Your work is great, I like the architectural works lots but your grendel was a force to be reckoned with. Those futurism layouts are very dynamic - once you blow em up they'll have a big impact. People going up the steps is a great idea, the graphics in the thumbs already stand out.
I did some futurism research last year, you should check out the sculptor Umberto Boccioni if you don't already know who he is. He's famous for his "movement".
awesome posts dude, "pass it down, don't hog it all..."

Just feasting on your stuff, and it occurred to me that I had only told you how great I thought your work was in some goofy PM during our TD. Anyhow, I’m not afraid to say it in public. “I love your work.” I can only echo the words from the "Fosterian Institute of Greatness”. in other words,"Yeah what Jon said"

nice stuff man, very geoff darrow... esp. the exagerrated anatomy. i really like the full page compositions you do when you're drawing a whole environment rather than just focusing on figures. to me those are the more interesting drawings you put up here, rather than just focusing on a figure and omitting the rest of the world, when you just let them be just another element of the whole picture, i feel they're more successful. the photos were nice for compositional purposes, are you going to use them for reference at all??
and for the solo figures, have you tried using a brush pen? if not i'd highly recommend it, esp. for that kinda thing you're doing with the cross contour hatches to describe your forms. the immediacy of a brush pen is amazing. also, check out this guy Katsuya Tarada if you haven't already, i think you'll get a kick outta him.
peace,

Whoa... amazing detail and design. Great stuff man, once again I love your style. I still can't find mine..:( I've been doing so many studies that I don't know how I can find a style that's my own..
tyboogie
April 5th, 2004, 04:33 PM
dakoscwash-- dont get too caught up in the style thing. I use diff styles for diff projects. everyhting on here is my default concept art style which is a style influenced by other concept artists that i admire. i would just look at as many masters and cultures art and draw from observation as much as possible---whatever comes out of all that will be fine
personally i think its better to be diverse and be able to draw things in diff styles. If an animation company came to you and said " we want to do an animated film based on the arabian nights" most people would just start doing the concept art in their default style (hopefully using ref of the culture tho).. BUT what if the entire style of teh film was based on traditional persian and arabic miniatures/paintings/design? (like an animated ancient persian painting or somn)?/
so the whole concept of style is only relevant to the project and how you are using that"style" as a means to an end.
IMHO the true "artists" are the ones that can attack any thing in any style and make it work
ty
EDIT*** one more thing-- it think this mindset of approaching projects with diff styles isnt very popular because using cultures and styles so pure isnt as commercail and bankable as middle of the road styles.

Ty, you name it i prodice it. As far as instruments, I play guitar, little piano/ keyboard synthesizer, and i got my turn tables which i love. I compose a little of instuments like cello and violin. I make a lot of electronic and jungle but i also make a lot of classical stlye and hip hop. Oh yeah and ive got 12 tracks on an ambient album, some shit simalr to boards of canada, but more tame, like aphex twin ambient. Do some jack johnson style folk shit too. Thanks Ty.. your definitely right with all that, I'll just work out the style I want relative to the concept I have, instead of using it for everything.. Now I can imagine how a style used for a dark concept would not work for a 'happy'? concept.

Hey Ty - some great stuff in this thread - I really love those line drawings a few pages back - that thin jittery line is really expressive. Reminds me of Cober - well or Android for that matter. (In a way) - that street scene, and the person on the bus are great. (I never have the guts to draw people on the train - is seems sort of predatory to me somehow...call me crazy).
SO, re this environment - I think, ya know, given that it's flooded with glowing phosphor-goo the walls and ruins are matching as well as they can - I mean that is a pretty bold color composition you got going. The thing I would crit - which is not something I expect you to do anything about - is that the POV is pretty static. The camera seems so flat-on looking - it's very 'stage like' in the proscenium (sic?) sense of the word...sry, that's my $0.02 on that...it kind of reminds me of an old adventure game background....:)

The sunken temple, in addition to of course being AWESOMELY OUTRAGEOUS, reminds me of the cistern level from the original tomb raider. Now that was a fun game.

awsome environment!
I'm digging the thumbnails with more blue just a tad more than the aqua/yellwo one, but the blue/orange combination is not as interesting as your current one.
one thing I did notice is how the two waterfalls in the upper left and right are very uniform. maybe they were man made. and also the statues are pretty much unscathed given the level of destruction surrounding them. I was almost expecting the lower right one to be missing its head.
is this digital? awsome environment!

April 30th, 2004, 05:33 PM
mutton--thx man. as far as teh photos go--jsut a lot of shooting and a lot of experiembnting with the options within teh camera. if you shoot 30 photos --one or two should turn out good enough to share --thats my theory. ;) one day i went up to st. john the divine (112th st.) and shot over 200 photos--fun!
marc--thx for teh feedback. I know what you mean about drawing people on teh train. I usually only draw people who are sleeping so theres no drama. One time a guy caught me drawnig him and demanded that i give him the finished drawing. i said no. hehheh. but yea--i try and keep it discrete.
as far as the comp/camera view--yea i think i know what your saying--i guess i was just going for a generic environment illustration just to show potential employers that i can handle an environemnt. but it did come out a bit static/constipated.
i wanted it tho have an adventure level feel to it
nim-thanks man--yea that level was dope--i see teh resemblance. when are you gonna post mreo sketches foo!?
hito--good points. yea for some reason this whole piece didnt quite hit the mark as far as translating what was in my heart and head. oh well. time to move on
it is digital BTW--thx
so heres the finished version--i might go back and clean up some things at a later date--but probably not--thx again for teh inciteful feedback guys

Mike - I'll tell ya what's lighting up the water, the 300 blue-tinted flood lights mounted under the water which have to be replaced by park employees during the off-season after they drain the pool!
Haha. Sorry Ty, couldn't resist. I really do like the piece!

haha--yea sean , any min now the studios gonna cut the power and the waters gonna go dark--the best part though is that those statues are animatronics that sing and play banjos like Chuckee cheeses (showbiz pizza to you oldschoolers)
but seriously,
the water is really lit by millions of drowned glowing fairies.

great stuff ty. The variety of styles and treatment are superb.
I noticed that you're into Beowulf.
Here's a new translation you might like. It's an audio CD read by the author. You'll also find John Gardner's book Grendel, which is the story told from the monster's perspective. A great read.

i just got a job at a kickass gallery in the city

Tyler this is amazing update
Drummer has creative
approach of fantastic detail
lacks of repetitive common
elements because its sooo great
the proportions of choosing
neck thickness and arm placement
gives this another atmosphere
i like your fabric organic designs
overall design is great
Wolvie its great dude
very "im an animal" attitude
ready to slash and kick your ass haha
its good piece
but
i jumped off my chair
with SEAWALKER
the touch of the figures
in the upper body and the seaguls
gives soooooo much epic
proportion and SIZE !!! i like the
form choice and the way you
picked colours and rendered
simply great, just one the tiny
thing , i think the water treatment
is perceived more like a swamp
or small water area than the
waves and sea treatment of
moving water in a vast area
but
dont listen to me dude you
are the pro here :^^:
but seawalker remains as
one of my favs, his face is amazing !!!!!!
