I'm Izzie and boy is this place intimidating. I'm a homemaker/derby girl/wanna be artist. I wanted to be an artist growing up but it wasn't really allowed or encouraged. "One should be a doctor or lawyer and keep art as a hobby" was the attitude I was brought up with. So now that I'm in my twenties have my own house and family I'm pursuing my own passions. Thanks for stopping by.

with online classes slowly killing my soul I haven't done much sketching so tonight I picked up Loomis's Fun with a Pencil and spent an hour making poorly rendered balding men.

Great work so far, your digital paintings are very good. Keep up the good work.

Timed poses with pose maniacs seems rather popular about here so I tried my hand at some 30/60 sec poses. They're much harder than timed poses I've done for class since they can come in wicked odd angles and don't have form shadows.

Spent another hour reading and sketching with Loomis then rounded out the night with a 10-min scratchy attempt at a cylinder. Really gotta work on that whole "painterly" technique.

30/60 sec posemaniac warm-up. Found an ancient bottle of ink while cleaning my closet this morning, but no dip pens so I played with it a bit using a small brush. Did a quick bit playing with Gestalt theories and my first self-portrait. Looks mostly female but I wouldn't say it looks like me, I'd say it'd pass better as a tranny Elvis.

Spent some time this afternoon with this thread. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18980) Great bit of info for starting painting in PS and some demos/process stuff.

My goal for October is to read through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain so tonight I read through chapter 1&2.

More book work. Took a little break from the book which is a bit heavy and did a bit of playing about in PS with a scan of a doodle rather underwhelming result but good for learning.

Thats a great book. I'm working my way through it right now too! Keep up the work, dont give up. You have to be very self driven to learn things on your own. Do whatever you have to do to stay passionate about it!

Thanks for the encouragement Zorcon & morningbloom.

Today has been impressively productive with the reading/art time. Generally I sneak in time here and there but today I've been sick and wound up with the day to myself. My husband is convinced I'm going to give our daughter swine flu (an impressive feat seeing as I have bronchitis) so he took her to visit grandma this weekend. So I've been holed up in my office/studio huffing Vick's and drawing.

This week I started making improvements on the space with my unused tuition money. I got a scanner/3-in-1 and a really nice Alvin Elite drafting table and a chair from craigslist ($125 schwing).

Only did a little bit with the book of the month today since I don't have a picture plane yet. I did a bunch of reading from Loomis, which is an interesting commentary on the times he lived in. His ideal forms bother me a bit, his figures have rather large traps and exaggerated v-tapers that are poorly balanced with the not overly muscular legs. Doesn't invalidate the usefulness of the resource just my bias as a gym rat.

With the being sick and all I've been sleeping more than spending time drawing. Some studies in charcoal, found my dip pen and nibs and perspective/drawing directly in photoshop practice.

Hey Izzie! Sorry to hear you're sick. I hope you get to feeling better soon. I really like the ear and eye from this last post. Also, good job making the toaster look shiny. Keep it up!

Bronchitis turned into pneumonia and I've been on my ass for weeks now. Slowly coming back to feeling better and only sleeping 12-14 hrs a day rather than 20. Slowly getting strength back and working on art again, attached 2 photoshop sketches. Basic shape still life and the first exercise from the Peer Project thread.

Working on some Loomis lately but my camera bit it. So quick digital doodle inspired by Mormons interrupting a zombie marathon this weekend.

Cheers.

I've been beating Loomis to death over the holiday long weekend, snuck in too a quick study of the Mona Lisa and some 30 sec Pose Maniacs exercises.

Feeling a bit bogged down in the studies I've been doing, I ran over to the tiny local library and checked out the entire art section minus the how-to manga books. Ended up with a book on sketchbooks, animation, a "complete" drawing and painting course, a tome on perspective and a cartooning book.

Feeling the need for more effortless fluff I've been doing bits from the cartooning book this afternoon first with the some newsprint and sharpie then digitally.

I really need to motivate myself to do more work from life, I'm just getting in my own way with the fear of getting things "wrong".

Still having fun making cartoon guys and churning out pages of unimpressive work. Did a lot of penciling today working on sighting and techniques but the only thing that came through from the shot is the cherries. Even doodling and messing about I'm more comfortable working on a 18x24 pad rather than in my sketchbook.

Raided the produce drawer to do some sketches from life.

Not much to post tonight, spent my afternoon's free time in the Mark English streaming presentation. After an odd conversation with my husband and about 20 minutes with a bucket of chalk I present...Dragon with hamburger.

Been away from drawing/the internet for a while. Over the holiday's I figured I made about 1,000 cookies for care packages and parties...and created about 80 feet of fabric from knitting and weaving random gifts. But I'm back to doing studies from books/life and doing more tattoo flash style doodling.

Broke my leg and spent some time in the hospital earlier this year, and now I'm making the most of my extended bed rest and drawing all I can. I'm currently working on learning Illustrator to help make some art work for my derby league. Attached are some failed derby designs.

Trying to read and work out of art books makes me feel like I'm spinning my wheels and doing not so hot. The skull sketch is from life and has managed to be the best work I've done in a few days...maybe I should take that to heart and do more life studies. I got some Gnomon dvd's for my birthday which inspired me to uncap a set of grey marker's I don't think I've ever used.

Hey there - this sketchbook looks like its off to a good start from what I can see! You are obviously motivated and have begun work on studies and reading around subjects that you are wanting to improve on! Having just started a sketchbook myself recently I know what you mean when you say this site is daunting.. but its also a huge goldmine of untapped knowledge, experience and kind people just looking to help others out with their art!

Keep up the good work

Thanks for stopping by ThomasM!

Been having trouble sitting down to do work, I have to check back into the hospital Friday for another surgery. Hopefully it will help with the pain I've been having.

More play with markers and something from the DSG which I miss read (pirate not prairie).
