Nice start! At the moment, I think the most you need to work on is composition. Before starting an enviro, try to experiment with different ways of putting it all on the paper. Check out the masters' landscape paintings, lots of them. Composition is difficult to explain but it's rather intuitive, you will soon se which elements fit well in the picture and which don't.
Also, when copying from life or from a photo, try to set all things in the right place and proportions before starting to render. For example, the bald man in your last post has a really small craneum (or really big face), and small eyes compared to nose and mouth.
Anyway, keep posting your work! you've got a good grasp on colours, and your pieces have a lot of potential!
Cheers:)

Aaay. Starting to do poses = good. Gestures are always good. ^^

Imho. If you see something is wrong with the picture you did, don't drop it and start a new one. Find what mistakes you did, what you didn't finish. As example those portraits if done with ref, try hard to achieve likeness. If you fail, try tracing.
Maybe try to work in value only. Don't bring color in yet. I personally find it hard.
And, well, studies, studies, studies. The usual drill.

Incinerated
September 27th, 2009, 05:26 PM
paran0id- Actually, the only ref work here is the posemanics stuff and the anatomy study, there will be some portraits here eventually and other ref needing stuffs.

Nice studies! One small suggestion is when doing quick gesture drawings (like the ones you did from pose maniac,) try to use fluid lines and capture the pose rather than using careful, short strokes to try to capture the outline of the each limb. Don't be afraid to add cross-contour lines around joints to help yourself understand how the body occupy space, or draw "through" something that's breaking a continuous line to make sure the line stays, well, continuous ;) Some people also find indicating where the ribcage and pelvis is helpful. Personally I understand the pose better if I draw a straight line connecting the shoulders and another through the width of the pelvis, it helps me understand how a body balances itself.

Hey man! Those anatomy studies are looking promising, keep them going! I find that studies like these can be hard to get into your head sometimes. You have to avoid making a 'copy' of the reference and instead do a 'study' of it. What I mean is, dont look at the reference and draw a line and look at the reference and rely on it too much. Try looking at it, memories parts of it and try drawing it without reference, or draw it as a copy and then try draw it again without reference. That way it helps to sink it into your memory. Keep rocking!!!!

Nice to see these studies. And YES!!!! More studies from reference! Tons should I say! Its a big big help I promise you. It would be nice to mix up studies and some imaginary work but ideally much more studies since the more you do of them, the faster you accelerate!
Something a friend of mine (he's an awesome artist) advised me on doing is spend 2 months on solidly busting out studies. You should find yourself much better at the end of it. Not saying you should follow that regime but the point is... MORE MORE MORE :)

Maybe try some simpler references, Things like the city might be too complicated to look at and analyze ever detail. How about an apple? And spend some time getting it reallly accurately.
Also, another exercise that will help you look at things.. take a simple linedrawing from another artist (often a Picasso drawing is used ive seen of a seated man) and flip it upside down and draw that! Upsidedown! That way you are not looking at the figure and thinking 'its an eye, I know how that looks like' and draw what you think, instead you should look and see just lines (it doesnt matter if it is an eye, its just lines) and you draw what you really see.

Incinerated

hey man, it's cool to see you going back to simple stuff and getting those down first. What I noticed about your girl portrait is that the edges are a little wacky--try trimming the side of the face to a firmer edge to make it really pop! Don't be afraid either to use hard-edged brushes for blending or soft shading. Keep it up man!

Hey man, thanks for stopping by my SB!

Ah, I should have read this before, but I painted over the girlie to show you what I meant by hard-edged [or hard round. everyone calls it a "hard round brush"].

Hey mate thanks for stoppin' by at mt book.

I think that you should leave the digital studies as for now, grab a pencil or vine charcoal and focus on construction, observe try to draw things in 3d, you have to learn to actually construcy objects.
Anyhoot it's starting to look better tons of hard work and it'll be good ;]

But hey noone ever said learning art is going to be fast and easy, art is about doing the difficultt stuff simple, and thats the most difficult! ;D

It’s been a while since I’ve been here and I can see you’re working hard. I like the EOW and the fruit are coming on. The angel’s legs are different lengths or the foreshortening is wrong. Filtering the glass is sort of lazy, but we’ve all done it. As you can see glass does have some very dark colours in it. Now finish that SP – it would be even better if you did one from a mirror, so you have to look hard at yourself and be honest.

The forum is being changed and sometimes it throws a glitch.

Incinerated
November 3rd, 2009, 03:41 PM
hey Blackspot thanks for stopping by, let me say YES MAM! (to most of it) - on the angel I think the foreshortening is behaving weird because I didnt define the knee enough.

your grey-scale environments seem to be the most successful at the moment.
looking at your 'skull from memory' I see you need to study skull structure a little more - also you have a similar problem to me, I have trouble maintaining symmetry - remember to keep flipping your image as you work, also a simple vertical line drawn down the centre can really help.

Danny_K
November 13th, 2009, 11:32 PM
you are progressing nicely, my suggestion to you do more photo/ life studies and less from Imagination. once you do tens and even hundreds of life/photo studies the imagination will not be constrained by technique and at some point you will see improvement from painting to painting.

so what are you waiting for? hit those reference sites! :)

jordyskateboardy
November 17th, 2009, 08:38 AM
Some great progress in here. Definately paying off. The last environment has some really neat colours! IN your coloured pieces your values tend to be alittle off and you're licking contrast. Contrary to your greyscale stuff. Try making an adjustmant layer where you set the saturation to totally grey so you can toggle it on and off so you can check how your image looks in greyscale and in this way work in color but you are able to check your values. Hope that helps a bit. Anyhoot keep going you're doing great!

Janos
December 4th, 2009, 07:52 AM
Heyo
Its getting better. One tip I would suggest is that you should try to intergrate the eyes and mouth better into the face. Let the skin wrap around the eyeball, and the mouth is basically skin as well, so just let it flow together better. But the most important point is to actually interpret the foto and not just copy it, otherwise, as harsh and as hard as it might sound, you could basically give a foto of herself. Let there be something of you as a person in the present. I hop you understand what I mean.

Cheers

Miycko- ah! you're back, actually I'm so busy these days so there should be way more. thanks for dropping by dude

Black spot- right you are ! values are a bit "drowned" in the color tho

Believe it or not this actually started as a construction practice...
oh well anyway I'm also experimenting with a new color tech which involves four layers of gradient mapping, main problem is it washes out the deep values. so far I'm convinced this could be an incredible way of coloring

Fumble- Plains of Face will wait a little I have a ton of anatomy to go through still

Don't wait. All that anatomy is going to mean nothing unless you understand form. Anatomy and form should be learned in tandem. The form tells you what to sculpt and build your anatomy into and onto, and the anatomy tells you the nature and nuances of the forms. They are both important. They compliment each other.
You can know every muscle, bone and piece of cartilage in the head and that will not enable you to construct one. Knowing the basic three dimensional mannequin version will.

My advice is not to put this off- get them both down at the same time and get used to thinking about them in tandem.

Your animals and environments are coming on - faces still need work. They need some colout other than brown to give them life. Have a good look at the colour of skin and marvel in myriad of colours that make it up.

Awesome environment study dude :teeth: really like the way you painted the rocks, they could be a little sharper though. i'd like to see what it would look like if you pushed it to a finish :) Sweet banana boat dude & nice work on the studies :)
