Round #155 Biped Insectoid!
Topic:
Biped Insectoid!
Creature Description: Biped Insectoid-- Design a new creature, insectoid in nature, that walks on two legs. Yes, it can have more than two legs (to use for grapsing, fighting, like 'hands') but it must walk on two. Yes, inspiration coming from spiders, solifugids, scorpions and the like are acceptable even though nitpickers will tell you they're not insects. Scale-wise, it can be big or small. It can live in a sci-fi or fantasy setting. That part doesn't matter. A new creature, bug-like in appearance, that walks on two legs. For those that need a reminder about the humanoid rule, I'll repeat this point: There's a big difference between a gorilla and a guy in a gorilla suit. A gorilla is a creature, the guy in the costume is not. Have fun!
Deadline:
Tuesday September 22th
Finals go here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=169070
note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)

Those are some really nice links. Good finds.
Well, this is my first COW. I am really impressed by the sheer creativity shown in these weekly events.
So I made some sketches of this bipedal insect, and since this is a WIP thread, I wanted to see what versions you guys liked the most.
Sorry if they are a little large.

Interesting topic, Biped insects will be a tough one :P here's some thumbs
Nice start Duman, looks like the insect will be a huge one. I think you make some different designs for the body too before you choose on which one to render. They all look kinda the same, maybe add some interesting details.. perhaps some decorative bodyparts acting as bait, or maybe something used in mating rituals?

Howdy there..I'm kinda new here, shy and in awe, been lurking and stuff, but never got round to posting before. I would really love to join in some of these COW challenges. From what I've seen it looks like mad fun.
So can any of you kindly and talented folks give me some general pointers and ideas to this noob as to how best to join in? Any kind words would be most appreciated. Thanks aplenty.

Hey :) I remember you from ImagineFX forums and the challenges there, nice to see ya!
Joining in is not difficult, just start typing here. You can keep the WIP thread updated with your wip's or you could work in secrecy and wait to show your work until the finals thread is up, really is up to you. However I think it's more fun to see people's work develope so please post wips :D

Okay, I hate to nitpick, but the Tyranid hive race is meant to be more like "space dinosaurs" with insect elements than wholesale starship troopers type bugs.

Man alive. Even Defiled Visions' sketches are amazing to look at. Shame on my talentless, grubby meat hands.
But on the plus side, even those sketches have inspired me to go back and add on my previous ideas. Three cheers for unintentional collaboration.

Hi Defiled, yep i used to knock around the ImagineFx pages, thought id try and pick up some good habits from the talent that knock around these forums. Many thanks for your reply. So this is the Wips page and we post finished entries elsewhere. Sounds straight forward, just this site seems massive and daunting when compared to imaginefx, I feel that I may be unable to find my way back to the same wip pages!
Cheers again Defiled Visions, im hoping to find some spare time over the next few days to try and post something up. However i have just completed wasted 3 hours trying to pick and post up a avatar image for use here...three hours, three hours i could have spent painting and drawing!!!!!

The Gurch -- Here is how I do it: on the reply box at the bottom, push the "Go Advanced" button beneath it. The next window there will be a button under the reply box that says "Manage Attachments." Use this to add all your images, its better than image links, your images won't get deleted over time. Welcome, hope to see some images soon!

Okay, here's my first idea. Any ideas/critiques for the design prototype? Distinct silhouette, not schizophrenic anatomy, etc?
I think the toughest part for me will be adding the bipedal aspect, but not going too far and anthropomorphizing the creatures (that would make them characters, right?) And I'm trying to go against hardcore spiky chitinous deathbeetles that I'd normally go for and try some rounded and softer shapes and edges with this guy. He's a butterfly/mosquito- like fellow that skitters around the desert, using his proboscis to suck water from underground and or cacti.
I'm really liking the sketches. This is gonna be a fun challenge!

Don't worry, most of us feel like novices here! There is a HUGE amount of talent here and if even a little rubs off on me, I'll be happy. The best thing is you really find yourself improving as you try to keep up with the guys and gals around these parts as long as you persevere.
Well, first set of wips. Came to like the one I went on to develop though I will still play around with parts of it. Wings, leg angles, etc. I realise that in the large one, it is squeezed a bit thin. I will work on that.

SIME, I like number two. I might lose the wings in the joints of the legs, however, as they don't make too much sense. Adding another pair of legs will make it more insect like as well.
And Gurch, I really like your style. It reminds me of something I saw a long time ago. I just can't put my finger on what...

labrynthine - I think that design has great potential.
lkjhgfdsa - excellent, those colours give a real exotic feel to it
imageenation - impressive design, though to me it has more of a squid or cuttlefish look than insect, really.
evolvingeye - cool, has an eerie HR Giger kinda mood
zimfin - watch the perspective on legs..the 'thigh' of the closest reads somewhat like part of the thorax. Foreshorten more, I suppose, or create more of an angle away from the body?

Lots of great concepts so far, glad to see more new ppl joinin' on the creature side. So here we go, i went back and commented on everyone at this stage, by page as well so i commented more then once on a few. I'll post my own concepts maybe later some time, im still doodlin'
PG 1
@DefiledVisions, love those thumbs, the last one on the top row is wicked.
@The Gurch, pretty cool pencils there, diggin all the crab-ish arms, nice expression as well.
@Mongreldesigns, Hey welcome to your first cow, nice basic sketch, maybe throw some wings ina the mix there and some more details, and textures(when the time comes), i like those legs though, they ''feel'' like they actually work. Oh farther down the page, looks bionic, pretty neat.
@Tyrus, interesting colors you pocked, looks like a mean masqeto wasp, pretty mean besides the colors, maybe play on that ingrained fear(for most) on the wasp and make it a bit more pointy. God stuff so far.
@lkjhgfdas, cool wips, lots of arms on this, looks promising.
@Labrythine, well thought out so far, cool mix of butterfly/mosquito, and it uses its parts to survive(water sucking from ground). Little different route then most are going, but that's a good thing.
@Wyna, bit dark so far, cool though, looks very alien and intimidating, looking forward to seeing where you go. Good stuff.
@Cy-AN, interesting sketches, hard to read, but looks like from your first partcially colored sketch that should clear up, nice colors and textures btw.
@Doomsupporter, nice name btw, nice first sketch and first post(s), i personily like the second thumb there, looks like it has the most promise.
@Rafarl kokiri, it's walking legs look like they need to be supported by other legs, based on their position and anatomy, of course it could just drag along it's backside i dunno, but nice start.
PG 2
@Duman, not sure if you've picked outta your thumb lot there, but second row down last thumb, looks like it's just lurching/lumbering along, head all slung down and has neat proportions.
@Doomsupporter, ahh i like these thumbs, very alien indeed, i like the second thumb, looks well just odd.
@searing, oh nice sketches, the one on the right on the second row is cool, the rest look a bit too ordinary, that one just looks like its a beefy insect.
@DragonFlu, another different take on the topic, i dunno i like the armor/scales, but cool take on this.
@Daeus, good sketches, not sure if you've picked something yet but the second to the last looks like a good start.
@Searing, ahh looks much better, it looks like it'll be cool in color.
@zimfim, pretty nice start, has a mutated spider quality to it, digg the claws, nice shading as well.
@Botch, last wip for sure, it has more ''character'' then the rest, looks liek hes a meat head bulked up fly just struttin'. Good stuff.
@ImaGEEnation, nice to see some pencils, awesome sketch, it'll lokk fantastic all painted up.
@evolvingeye, like some sorta dino-insect, pretty cool, jhard to make it out though.
@Duman, yeah it does have a creepy look, good choice. as far as advice maybe play on scale a bit here, when i look at this thing i think of like ''dumb giant'', maybe add in some plants and trees in the bg. Just my opinion.
@N1va, doesn't look like you've crossed the character line, but it mite just be the pose, it's too vertical imo, maybe tilt his body forward a bit more. You should keep going and play around a bit more with it.
@Cam Sykes, nice, i like the colors and weird arm design. Keep it up.
@SIME, wow lots of concepts, #4 right of the bat here is awesome, i like that horned beetle look(can't remember it's real name), good stuff either way you go though.
@The Gurch, not sure why you're havin so many issues with the forum but i hope it works it self out, nice start with the colors, interesting bg.
PG 3
@ImaGEEnastion, awesoem cleanup, ima sucker for great line work, hope too see more.
@daveneale, hmm weird, very cool though once i look at it more, has a cute alien feel to it.
@Wixxi, keep goin deadline isnt till the 22 of sep., 5 days is loads of time, pretty cool sketches, the last post is cool, likea warrior insect.
@audit, actually pretty cool even at this stage, the use of the swan for inspir, is neat.

I redid my idea here, I was at first going for a more cartoony look but after seeing the awesome stuff posted here I wanted to rein it in a bit.

Many thanks Doomsupporter for you comments. Nope, i didn't say i was a novice just a complete noob here on this site, have been using digital tools for about two years , well didn't really do much for the first years.
Actually there seems to be a lot of first times in this cow challenge. A big hi-ya to all you fellow first times (-:
Gorgeous crisp clear line work there Imageenation. really crazy looking mouth end to him, loving that tail too.
Gosh Daveneale, how utterly beautiful and effortless does you entry look. I'm blown away with the sense of light. Absolutely amazing i want to be able to paint as good as this one day.
Wixxi cool relaxed hand you have there, you make it look really easy. I like the final figure he has a great dramatic stance...it looks almost like its your figure number two who has just exploded up ready to attack. Nicely done. You're fast, I like how easily you manage to work up a second painted image..I actually like that second critter, he's got a certain style to him..and the lighting works well.
Izer many thanks for your kind words and helpfulness with geeing me up..much appreciated. Great to see you have taken time and effort in giving a mention to each and everyone, you're cool!
Welcome Pate5. nice little start on your figure.
Mongreldesign. great solid start, but i think you need to watch the legs, i think his centre of balance would be off, try making the legs bigger splay them out a bit and give him some nice solid looking feet. It look odd because you haven't got the floor plane right his feet dont look planted properly thats all.
Zimfin..awesome start on yours already, looking forward to seeing it develop.
Audit..i didn't miss you out..sadly i just cant see your image. Why does that sometimes happen on here? Why?

WOW Cyan very dramatic creature, It certainly looks dangerous - grabs my attention. I like the comic book style you have used. , great how you have handled the lighting. If you don't mind me making an observation I would just like to say that the front of his body seems to be a little bit confusing to me ..it looks like it need to be facing front a little bit more or the big leg on the right of us need to be moved back a little bit. I gotta add, those heel attachments are a clever bit of design.
I managed to get some basic colours down on mine...again!!! I say again because I worked until three am on it last night and my computer died and turned off. I had been doing regular save..but I still lost all that evenings work so I have had to redo it all over gain...still...looking on the bright side..its a bit of extra practice...and I sure can use that!

great ideas guys, loving stuff from zimfin, imageenation, sime among others. I don't usually have time with work and all, did finish my CHOW entry so I'm rushing this one out again...UGH! Gonna make this biped insectoid differently i hope. Keep it up everyone!
P.S. Again, forgive my ugly sketches and unorthodox way of finishing up a piece.

Here's my WIP, i plan to do a illustration with all of the Bousflorins (it's a set), so just a concept sheet(just side views). Bit sketchy and no color, just wanted to put some effort and thought into this one(i usually just wing it), apologies for the misspellings i typed those descriptions in photoshop and didn't spell check, but i'll edit any mistakes before i post my final. Hope the descriptions make sense(if they don't i'll fix it before finals). Had a idea and just ran with it....crits/comments welcome.
More great updates everyone, a few comments(i'm tryin to be a bit more active here, i usually just watch):
@Wixxi, i dunno i still like the first one there, mite just be the darkness of it i dunno, great work on both though.
@Pate5, nice sketch, maybe try to push it bit further. Try some mixes of creatures, play around a bit, throw some ideas around and have fun with it.
@modgreldesigns, this one is looking pretty good, yeah textures will help alot, from what i can see maybe using like a leave quality and texture, like it's wrapped in leaves or something. Keep it up.
@zimfin, loving the color and texture, looks like it's gunna turn out well.
@Cy-AN, it's my pleasure. Pretty awesome new creature, a lot of nice details and colors. Oh and coloring style as well, soemthing different never hurts. Good stuff.
@The Gurch, ^ pretty awesome coloring, looks like a oil painting, at first that's what i thought it was. Like to see the rest.
@Duman, lookin' good with some color, as far as suggestions, maybe play on your creatures large bright eyes and maybe make the bg dark and errie. Get some emotions of fear going of the unknown, in the dark next thing u see is that thing coming at ya. Plus u can hide those feet at least(as long as most of the creature is visible it should be ok). Other then that maybe google some insect legs and use them as ref to finish up the arms and legs.
@dwinbotp, hey never to late, best of luck with the CHOW, sketch looks like it has some promise though. Still a bit of time left.

Pate5- Heheh looks cute! I want to see more of him! :D

Zimfin- Great progress, I want more!
cy_AN- Nice style you got going! No comment from me! Post it up in final! :D
The Gurch- Hehe thanks for the welcome, mang! I may have to come here every week! I love what you came up with, looks traditional! Nice work!
Duman- Nice WIP. How about giving him hundreds (well maybe less than that :p )little tentacle hands? And long toes? Or wings?
Dwintbop- heheh glad to see you again, I just finished CHOW too! :D Liking the silhuette (spelling?) you got! I hope you get to finish it! :D
Izzer- Wow dude! A lot of studies! Awesome! I'm glad you entered! ^^ can't wait to see more!

Alright. I think he is just about getting to the point where I wouldn't hate myself if I submitted it. So for tomorrow Im going to try to get some more little detail and color into him. Maybe pop out the shadows and highlights a little and tweak the background.
Now I want you guys to be absolutely vicious in your critiques, as I want to make this guy the best I can before I submit it.

Okay, about 4years since I did this las t so please forgive me for my presumption to critique! (back to front for occlusion purposes!)
(pastachio nut fever!)
Can Sykes That muted green is sweet, remember to keep 2 layers;- one for shadow then another for hilights to set tha critter towards tha viewer...please! Woo!
Duman Same for you, remember a shadow under tha critter to give it a base level from which it is presenting itself up from- also those eyes are so bright! if they are meant to be then remember that the light will reflect from tha carapce around the eyes also. Woo! (Woo! is a Goldcoast thing,... means have at ya! or some thing!?!)
Izer when I see that coloured and cut I have no doubt it will be grand! get onit- so far so good!
dwinbotpDie! er, I mean Woo!
I have no doubt by the time I have written this tha wip will have evolved into somethin' rad sooo. composition wise remember that for every positive mass there should be a negative mass (lookin at tha feet atm) Woo!
The Gurch I see an outline there that doesn't contain the whole creature so I am thinking either choose to outline it entirely or pick a light direction and hilight half of the outline to solidify the critter within the composition... Woo!
Cy-AN tricky! Phat outline so keep or don't as per above and the joints may need a little cleanup on the carapace connections- remember- someone is gunna build from your conceptart! Woo!
zimfin remember a shadow and a highlight layer okay?!? and maybe desaturate tha background with ctrl+u as it is flattening tha image a bit...Woo!
mongreldesigns Tha back leg is almost tha same shade as the hand in front of it as far as composition holds. if it were my creation I would erase the back leg a little (12%maybe..) just to bring tha hand a little foreward?!? Woo!
Wixxi aaaah! I like tha first one better sooooorry!?! but with tha 2nd ones details?!? remember that it is way faster and easier to mess with shit on a digital level than an oil or acrylic level (looks at commisioned oil painting next to cpu and mutters!) I like tha craqulature on the second piee but tha first pose has more dynamic.... Ouch! bad lkjhgfdsa bad! Woo!?!
Pate5 Worthy sketchup now make me smile with a coulour wip and an overtone wip to solidify the structure then a shadow layer and hilight will bring that critter to life! Woo!
ImaGEEnation Sweet lookin' critter I say, remember to keep a full outline or not, half/half can look unprofessio nal to tha professionals and maybe a little photoscopic blur fo the back limbs as atm they are flatteing the radness of the critter! Woo!
audit even now it looks like potential encarnate! swish and a colour layer and swish shadow and highlight! Woo!
daveneale sweet background and what of tha critter? c'mon with a background that sweet I wanna see that critter pushed forward with yer talent yeah!?! aome reflections from tha foliage even?!? Woo!
SIME Nice aq in sweet! if you have tha time, There ain't nuthin' sayin ye canae have two of em fighing each other or interacting on some utha animalistic level ya? Woo!
n1va I wanna see tha uper limbs in profile as well as tha legs, and maybe use tha liquid filter for tha wings? just to see if it moves them a little less paralel to tha viewer? not that I use it much... a bit tricky but worthy when I need it ya? Woo!
evolvingeye Dooooo it! make that critter step up! I would like ta see highlights and shadows for sure! a little bit floating atm...Woo!
Botch cool mockups n now I wanna (as we all do) see one or two coloured and composed! There is definitely a lot of character within each design so use that to push tha final few ya? Woo!
Okay, sorry to cut short! but it is food timefor that creatures (aka ME) so I will be back for mor I suppose?!? if this goes well at that...

thx for comments lads, dunno if i'm gonna retry a third time, running out of time :(...but maybe
I'm gonna format my desktop first, i might retry after that.
lkjhgfdsa: Nice work on the details and wings. I love the colors in the wings. Might i suggest an other background? Something like the planet felucia in star wars would look nice. Keep it up! About my pieces, don't worry, now i see they both look like shit lol, so back to zero it is anyway.
Cy-AN: Very realistic approach, i love it. Not a big fan of painterly look though, perhaps go for realistic blending? Also change the background and make the insect a little smaller, its a bit to massive at the moment.
ImaGEEnation: Nice looking end result. I like your different style, it does its job well and it sure separates itself from the others.
daveneale: Haha! awesome. It's very funny but i think you can improve it a little more. For starters i think the creature itself appears to small in the piece. After all this is CREATURE of the week and not environment of the week so perhaps move the creature closer to the camera so we can see it better. The scene is ok, but a bit boring, maybe add some light flares trough the trees. For the creature itself, as i said before it looks very funny, but if i may be honest, it doesn't look very insectoid but thats a matter of opinion.
Doomsupporter: Your end result is very clean, somewhat academic. But i think the insect's arms and legs look a bit to stone-ish :/ I like your creatures anatomy though but it would have looked better if it was a bit more slimey/insectoid. Never the less good job on the overall painting!
zimfin: Nice creature design, i like the tall vertical shape. Good work on the rendering so far, looking forward to see the end result.
SIME: Nice creature designs, i like the last one the most (bottom right) so far, nice quickrendering, i see you master rendering pretty well cuz obviously it doesnt take you much time to work out a thumbnail, looking forward to your final entry!
Duman: I liked your first black shape studies alot, you render doesnt look bad either, but i think the perspective is a bit akward and the stance is also kinda weird. I'm also having trouble understanding how this creature balances itself, so maybe have another look at that. The colors look ok, but maybe you can give the piece a bit more energy by adding alternate lightsources?
Pate5: I think you should add a bit more detail and blend out the colors more. To be honest it looks far from finished. I'm sure you can make something nice out of this but you will have to invest more time. I'd also suggest looking up some pictures of insects to have a better view on their anatomy. Sorry for not beeing to positive on your entry but i'm trying to point you in the right direction. Hope you understand.
Dragonflu: Looks good, but small. The creature itself looks interesting, i like the colors. To bad you used sideview though, your creature would be better viewable from an angle.
Daeus: COOL sketches! i like alot of the designs. Now bring em to live =)
evolvingeye: I like the textures and the creature has a very insectoid feel which is good! But i don't like the exaggerated brown mist on the back leg, arm and tail. I also find the piece a little empty, a nice background can fix this. Keep going!
Thats all for now, i know i missed alot of you folks, and you as well diserve response, but don't worry tomorrow i'm posting part 2 =)

Wowwee some natural born entomologist at work in here! The standard is higher than a fleas jump, some spectacular work going on, its so great to see so many different takes and approaches , its been fun seeing the images coming alive. Well done everyone.
Cw, its beautifully done and look soooo cute despite that red nasty looking spike between his legs!. You have a neat way of working. I loved you colour try outs too.
Durman yours sure does give a jolt, its something you would never wanna wish to meet in a dark alley.
Fuse boy, I applaud you brilliant sketching skills, it a nicely done idea.
Zimfin, I just adore the perfecto work you have done with applying the pattern on the head and right side of your creature, you have given it some knock out colouring colouring, I even like how you've handle the background.
Nice going Evolving eye. All done and dusted and youre ready to go set it free over in the finals section.
Cy-an, good going there the facial area looks very insect like indeed
Dwinbotp, its a superb nature study , the insects look amazing in their natural environment, you have fleshed out a lot of the creatures background by showing its habitat. Really excellent lighting by the way.
Sorry to every one else who deserves a worthy mention but I have only commented on the images on this page so far.

Drats! I still gotta a far bit to do on mine..been plagued by computer problems, I got a bit of tiding up done on mine last night and today the damn file wont open! So I had to take a save from a few steps back and do it over. The hard drive seem to emit loud clicking and whirling sounds when i save anything...its worrying...i had best back up all my stored artwork on this before it blows!!!
I aim to get most of my painting done tomorrow. Will post an update then.
AS its getting near to the closing date and as its my first time, can some kindly soul please tell me what I need to do to get a image up in the final. I see that its fashionable to put a frame round the picture with the challenge details in it. Where and how do I get this done?
Many thanks in advance for any pointers.

Okay, i have just been for a wander about, trying to look for instructions telling you what to do in case of a COW entry that needs posting up. I didn't find anything! I see that you have to post you name and the creatures name ( in white) and some kind of written account of the concept. I also noticed that not everyone has the border around there picture. Do you get null and voided if you fail to do all the steps? Please could someone tell me in easy simpleton terms , step by step what we need to do to get a entry in, really Im not panicking ..much. Cheers again Gurch.

Gurch, here's the easiest way to post your final....
copy paste this...
[*B]Artist: [*COLOR=White]your-nickname
Concept: [*COLOR=White]name-of-your-creature
your-description
Then take out the asterisks and filling out your nickname between the brackets, like so...
Artist: The Gurch
Rinse and repeat, creature's name, then a brief description of your creation. It depends on you whether it's based on reality or something that just might pop out of nowhere.
Regarding borders, some may have them, but not necessary. What IS important is having your name, the COW # and the creature topic at hand. Hope this helps!

My god, I'm finding the overlapping limbs really challenging. I'm trying to get away from "drawing" everything and using more painterly strokes to define values, but with bigger brushes, I can't resist the temptation to mask off each limb .. which takes forever and seems to lead to poor outlines. At this point, I think it makes more sense to knuckle down and just draw the bastard, as if I were using pencil crayons. I'm certainly learning a lot!

Thank you very much Dwinbotp for the advice on posting up for the finals. The way you have explained it, It looks fairly straight forwards. Thanks for lifting some of my fears. What exactly is the deadline for finishing? i still have too much to do )-:
Also does anyone know if animated gif can be posted up, I wanted to start sketchbook here and post some gifs.
Looks promising Fuseboy, although I would define the igloo style building a bit better with some shading. In fact you should shade it exactly the same as the creatures body... in fact you ought to lay some pipes and tubing near the shelter so that it looks like the big biped ole has become confused thinking its another one of its own kind fallen over.

The dead husk of arachniform megafauna specimen D-349 has stood upright at the edge of the equatorial desert since its discovery in 2898, apparently having been dead for hundreds of years. Its passing resemblance to the aggressive (though tiny) hunting brachelids of the Rassleen wetlands was great fuel for the imagination, and man-eating megafauna was renewed as a staple of horror streams for the next several decades.
Frozen in its final posture, it seemed to scan the sun-baked horizon as if waiting for prey to appear. But what on earth could something so large possibly eat on Rasselus III, a planet with no land animals larger than mice (other than the primitive remnants of the failed first colonist wave)?
The environmental preservation statute of 2921 closed the site to tourists, and shortly afterwards a permanent zoological station was set up.
The discovery that D-349 was still metabolizing took everyone by surprise, but the evidence (detection of subsoil alkaline off-gassing - c.f. Steiner, 433/2a) was incontrovertible. More horror streams were made (there was even a short-lived theme park on Rasselus IV), and research activity ground to a halt as Steiner's team made the rounds on the talk stream circuit.
When work resumed, other surprises were in store. This time, however, Steiner's team chose to stay out of the limelight, making the controversial decision not to annouce the discovery of a massive keratinized deposit in the sand beneath the specimen. D-349 was clearly in a sedentry final phase of its lifecycle, and so the deposit was almost certainly a one-off fluke (perhaps a product of cult activity dating back to the first wave) and was definitely not an excreted mass of indigestible human hair. The safety of the Rasseleen communities was at no time in serious doubt.

http://i37.tinypic.com/2ebc1mv.jpg
first of all...stil a wip! nothing will stay that way.and now for the crit:
a demonic bug race which consumes the souls of the demons and then these souls bind to their body and under their control.
hopefully ill be able to finish it off ~_~
several things about it:
*legs dont seem to be that interesting so it might change .
*too dark,will be changed too.
* too flat, because i want to define the demons then i want to know where each demon is first befor i move them backwards\forward
prob forgot some things but well ill try adressing all the issues :D and i rly rly rly rly lack the inspiation for a background although i would love to draw one for this but ill see if ill be able to find something :D
C&C are more then welcomed and ill post some comments soon :D
edit: LOL posted it in the finals section by accident <(O^ _ ^O)>

Not exactly sure where this image is going...insects have so many diverse colors and shapes, I'm just overwhelmed with potential directions that I want to go. Anyways...it's a WiP, but who knows? By the time I turn it in, it may end up being something altogether different...oy!

DefiledVisions - cheers man, gotta say im loving your colour pallete for that wip, did u use finger painting to get the range of colours or just a low opacity brush?

September 21st, 2009, 06:39 PM
thanks SIME, I kinda just multiplyed colour over the linework. Using the pressure of the pen, varrying the opacity. Began with very dark and desaturated hues to get the desaturated midtones. Now working in some overlay saturation and intensifying colours.

Someone has to say it.
We're boned.
That is going to look amazing. I was almost hoping you had forgotten, therefore given us little guys a chance!
I am also glad you picked the thumbnail you did. Its a naturally dynamic pose.

Izer many thanks for liking my painting style mate, its much appreciated. I can not be believe how much effort you have put into yours, i feel embarrassed just drawing and painting...you have written the authoritive pages of a natural history tome. The work you have done in fleshing out the background is astounding so much though gone into it.. Really love the design work and the delicate drawings, I also feel the colours work beautifully..although i would dread to be faced with the task of colouring the Bousflorin Queen, brilliant undertaking - hats of to you pal.
Acb some great demonic vibes going on in yours, that turquoise lighting adds an otherworldly atmosphere, your right about the legs needing attention..as for a background I'd go for a rocky setting because it would be a natural choice with legs that long he would be able to climb over most rocky obstacles and crevices
Luvazquez , lovely job on the creature there, love the simple yet effective background.
Howdy again Defiled visions, another start and so late? Adore those brush marks you have made the choice of palette is suitably murky and bog water looking. lovely start indeed.

Surely it would make a fitting entry?
Well, it is a Bug on two points of contact,...okay..okay...i know its not a Bi-ped its more of a Bi-tread.

Well this is all, i won't have a chance to edit after tonight and it's 1:49 am, everyones looks great , thanks to the new posters for joinin cow once again. Few comments for those on this page.
@The Gurch, nps man, great job. Started as a few notes in my note pad(seen below, i have terrible handwriting) and a few tiny doodles and just went from there, fun stuff though. Yeah just hope it makes sense, unfortunately i can't put anymore time into this piece after this post because i mite be moving into a different place tomorrow so dunno if i'll get to use the net to update. Oh yeah her...oh geesh i spent a few hours tonight finishing up, i actually painted her like 4 or 5 times before i settled on a body color and that dictated the rest of the family, i'm not to happy with her bouquet but it's all i can do for now. Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated and thanks for joining COW.
@SIME, turned out awesome.
@abc, hope to see it finished, i like the details on the bottom of it.
@luvazquez, should add some textures in here, and it can go anywhere, good job so far.
@defiled visions, lovin' the line work, looks like it'll be sweet.

Yes, there is still time. Poll should be going up tomorrow around noon. I have a phone interview tomorrow around that time, so it might be a little later.
As of this writing it is now 6:10pm Central US time on Tuesday.
So yes, work, work, work. Zypherax: black and white is acceptable if there is not enough time to color.

I'm gonna assume we're posting the finals here as well? Just in case the answer's yes, I'm putting my final as well as another WiP...if it's not necessary...chalk it up to my being a first timer :)
The WiP...things were kind've getting away from me here. Too much green, the colors too intense and bordering on cartoonish. I favor a more monochrome or earthy palette. The antennae were starting to annoy me as well. Also, the angle on the rear of the biped was way off.
Quick change of perspective, some major re-shuffling of colors and the final is what I ended up with. Really wish I had started on this challenge a week ago, but such is life.
Great challenge everyone, btw...loving these images.

@luvazquez - I like more the first design (the upper one) :D Those black spots are good with that blue and blue eyes push out more the facial features :D yes the background is a little green and right hand (Our right) in both variant is a little small compared to other but the angle on the rear (ass) I liked more in the lower one
However nice design good work :D

I have to admit, when I woke up this morning I realized I liked the first version better as well. Ah well..too late to change it now, but I did rework this image and incorporated the better elements of both versions, just to see it through.
I posted it on the last page of my sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2445716#post2445716), if you want to peep it.

Another heads up kids:
Okay, this phone interview of mine today is turning into a bunch of work... not art work, but business work. I'm juggling a few balls here to get everything to align with the moon and stars. So the poll will be TOMORROW... giving you yet another day to refine, refine, refine.
Keep on keeping on...

Wooo, super late this time. Probably won't be able to finish, but thought I'd post what I've got.
I did pages and pages of sketches trying to figure out which way I wanted to go with the bipedal thing, but I finally narrowed it down to an almost completely vertical biped. I found the only way to deal with designing something as complex and 'alien' and an arthropod was to start silhouettes. Here's what I have so far:
