dude, I was thinking the exact same thing...I was looking over my 'Art of Star Wars' Eps. 1 & 2 books, and he is the absolute best artist in these books...he actually made Jar Jar look awesome. I have been searching all over the Internet for a website, and alas I cannot. There has to be one somewhere!:(

I have never seen an official Ian McCaig website.

Ian was my conceptual art mentor when i was interning at ILM.
he is also the warmest and most talented artist i have ever met. Ian is the kind of guy that would rather spend his time making more art that investing the energy to promoting himself,


but we can be optomistic and hope that someday the world will see an official Ian McCaig website. and we will all become more humble artists.

hey Android...I was wondering, I applied for an Artist position for Lucasarts and sent a portfolio to them back in late December; I got an e-mail saying they got my stuff, but haven't heard from them since. Should I assume I haven't got the job? There's no way to follow-up on the position, since they don't have a phone number on the website and the e-mail they gave me was a mass-automated one. Whatever should I do? Eeeek!

Yeah, Iain has a website. He's had it for about four years now.
Only thing is, he never puts anything on it (for public viewing anyway).
I get after him about it from time to time... but that's exactly the problem. Time. As in, he's got none. <shrug>
Your only real chances of seeing his work are the Art of Books for Star Wars, and some past covers he did, as well as the occasional piece from a puzzle book he illustrated about 15 years ago. As for film stuff, you can find bits here and there from T2 and some others (Dracula, maybe Hook, not sure about the new Peter Pan), but really... not much is out there.

Cyber... ILM is probably the best of the L companies when it comes to getting back to potential artists (you want the phone call, not the letter!) LucasArts... not so hot- but yeah, you can probably assume...

I ran into Ian Mcaig about a month and a half ago at Borders in San Francisco. We chatted a bit and I asked if he was going to be talking at the GDC this year. He said no. Part of the reason seemed to be that he didn't have anything new that he could show. He said he's busy working on some new project that he can't reveal right now.

He is a really great guy and a great teacher. I'd love to work under him.

He told me he was no longer with ILM.

..I was wondering why there were so many Dermot Power images compared to McCaig's in 'Art of Episode II'; not that I don't like Mr. Power's drawings, but McCaig's stuff is so much more alive. I opened the book and saw the flood of Power drawings and thought, "Uh-oh...looks like they are planning on letting McCaig go soon...*sniff*"

Nothing there though. Iain's always got a few pokers in the fire at one time, keeps him from ever getting to things like a site. In the twelve years I've known him, we've gotten together in the same location only twice, at ILM... all other times it's been all over the damn place!

RE: cybercyst - I understand your point. For me Doug's work seemed rushed and small in comparison to other artists featured in the Episode II book.

I just was just surfing the Bud Plant Illustrated Books site when I saw a book listed by Ian McCaig called " Casket of Souls." It only features 15 color paintings by McCaig, and is rather expensive, but I figured someone might be interested.

I have CoS... it's quite a good book, but from a definite period of Iain's work. Published in 86/87 originally.
The paintings are great, even more so if you consider that each of them is also a puzzle, with some pretty strict needs outside of normal illustration.

Worth the 75...
