Hi I'm a wannabe artist that studied Computer Science at UIUC, and I'm practicing to get myself good enough to get into Art Center in Pasadena :) My main priority is on concept designs for stories and games, so you'll be seeing a lot of sketches of random stories that I made up. I'll try to update as much as possible so be sure to leave any criticism you can think of
I'll start off this newb sketchbook with a couple of old sketches I've made during high school. Enjoy!
I am currently working on a personal manga project, please click on the following link if you want to jump straight ahead to the manga :)

Heterogenic series - the purpose of this piece is to integrate special features such as fire into a normal daily scene without making it look too exaggerated.
I am planning on drawing a series of these with different supernatural mediums as well.

I've decided to get my lazy ass to work and use this thread as my comic progression update thread :) Enjoy.
The following series of images are redrawn rough drafts of a manga that i have been working on. The title is 'Wind' and is about...well you'll see.

I've decided to change some of the dialogues between the convict and the cop to the following:
after seeing the guy shove the old lady-
convict: "shouldn't you be doing something about that?"
cop: "what do you mean, the guy was in a hurry. it's an airport,
shit like that happens everyday"
convict: "well you're the cop, i thought you'd be a little more on the concerning side when it came to shit like this..."
cop: "like you even give a shit, you wouldn't be in those if you did in the first place"
The reason for the change was because the dialogue seemed unnatural. :/

awesome work man!!!
im not sure why more people arent spotting the talent in here, but i think its aces! you deserve more comments in here. all these loose page layouts are great! the character work is really nicely done. i think you should tighten up some of the pages to finished linework, it has a ton of potential. keep it up!!

Dubu - Thanks for the comment on my thread. Man, your Manga is looking really good even in this sketch form. Your structure is very solid in your characters and I can tell you really know your stuff. I love how you are drawing the faces as well. Although I love lots of Manga, I sometimes get tired of looking at the way most of the faces are drawn but your style definitely stands out in my mind from what I can see. We should keep in touch for sure! I'd love to keep track of your progress and pick up your book when it's out. Thanks again for your post!

To be honest, the way I read comics is by looking at the pictures a million times and if I keep seeing things that are interesting to me then I finally take the time to read it. In this case there are lots of cool things that grab my attention. The page in the airport is especially interesting where the wind like cloud is surrounding everything. I'd love to see how this is going to be cleaned up to get a better feel for how this will look. I haven't taken the time to read it though...except for the caption in that spread I was just talking about.
The faces and camera angles seem really nice and keep me interested. The new airplane page is very nice and dynamic like you were shooting for. One thing though, if this is a spread page, your dialogue box will be cut down the middle at the bottom of the page. The imagery look great though.
Kaileighblue
November 9th, 2009, 12:30 PM
I really like your style and paneling, etc. The handwriting is a little hard to read but this is the roughs? I got completely distracted by the fact that it's the airline from Lost(among other things.) That's not your problem though. :D
Dubu
November 9th, 2009, 01:45 PM
Yay, comments!
@brubaker // I'm kinda worried that I might lose the windyness once I clean it up lol, but yeah I'll definitely get to it. Maybe work on some color pages as well. I also notice that about the monlogue box :/ I'll have to get around fixing that.
@Kaileighblue // Yep, these are still roughs. It's cool that you noticed that. Apparantly Oceanic Airlines is a favorite among show and movie writers to use in certain 'plane disaster' stories :P
Arne Meyer
November 9th, 2009, 02:34 PM
Promising comic,
I donīt know much about comics, but for me it is way to exhausting to read.
I guess you need a more cleaned up structure with bold panel rims etc.
For the texts you should use a computer font in the final version, you can create an own custom one for your needs if you want to, this way it will be much easier to read.
What also is a bit distracting is the fact that on some pages there is too much text for my taste, I read comics mostly because of the pictures.
The drawings I can see are great and the airplane drawings are awesome.
I will read the whole thing when it is in a more polished status.
And please color it :)
Good work!

Kapil
November 10th, 2009, 09:18 AM
the pages looks nice, but you're kind of drawing the same panel over and over. no dynamic angles, no extreme close-ups or pan shots. It's always pretty much in front of the character from the torso up. You need some more variety. It's getting kind of boring to look at. Just some crit, i' dont want to sound like an ass, its just something to keep in mind.
Dubu
November 10th, 2009, 10:12 AM
@Kapil // I see... yeah I see what you're saying. I guess I got too comfortable with certain angles and distances and ended up avoiding unfamiliar ones... I'll take ur comment into advice and I hope I'll be able to implement that in my future pages :)

November 10th, 2009, 12:15 PM
I agree with Kapil a little. But at the same time, I don't think you need to do it too much until the story calls for it. I just love looking at your faces. They are so loose but so well structured.

@zou // Thanks! I don't have much life drawings to show... I'll be sure to post when I get one done :)
@brubaker // Yeah...that's what I was thinking but i did notice that some scenes might be better with different angles. More importantly I'll have to get comfortable with closer or further away scenes...It feels kinda fixed like movies or tv shows.
Sorry for being dumb, but what do you mean by 'loose'? I'm still kinda new on the whole art term thingy :P
@TheHut // Thank you :) I enjoyed drawing the plane scenes alot.

Sorry for being dumb, but what do you mean by 'loose'? I'm still kinda new on the whole art term thingy
I just mean sketchy, or quickly drawn. A loose line as appose to a perfectly tight line drawing where every line is exact and there is no sketchiness. Wow, don't quote me on that. It's the best I could do.

Greetings, ryukin here.
Dubu, your manga is amazing! I was totally blown away the first time I read it. I can't believe you call yourself a wannabe artist!
Your story is interesting and the character designs rock!
...I read some of the other people's post and do have to agree that the shots need to vary a bit. But they are on a plane afterall and it's cramp in there... I think if the shot gets pulled out too far and it's not done well, you could get a lot of people/objects/environment unnessarily cluttering up a panel.
Also, the reading flow... It's quite easy to read from page to page, although there were a couple of times I 'panel skip' due to dialogue balloon placement, like in chp1. pg.4... I read from panel 2 to panel 4. Also in chp.2 pg.17 from panel 1 to panel 3, but then again maybe it's just the way I read comics, balloons first and pics second. Weird, I know but that's how I roll.
Oh, got to mention, the head bang in chp.1 pg.12 and the pic on chp.2 pg.00, golden :teeth:
And keep up the nice work!

@ryukin // Thanks for the really good/useful, review/comment. Yeah, I see what you mean about the panels.. the chat balloons are kind of misleading, I can fix that :) As for the shots I have an idea on how to make them vary a bit more. For the other panels you mentioned, I tried to loosen up the seriousness with those panels an I'm glad you liked it :)
@phoenicorn // Thanks, those were doodles that I did when I was bored a bit ago. I hope to do some bigger, longer ones in the future that has more meaning to it.

The People that Shaped Who I am Now #1 - Paulo Coelho
Most famous for being the author of 'The Alchemist', Paulo Coelho was one of the people that enabled me to pursue my goal as an artist that I have today. By depicting an epic story of a boy who had a dream and stuck to it till the very end despite of the events that prevented him from doing so, he reminded me of my childhood dreams and torched my heart to propel towards my goal. If it wasn't for this guy I might not have been willing to continue drawing.
* Drew this during break times between teaching the kids. Took me about an hour or so. It's been a while since I've attempted to draw portraits so I'm still a bit shaky on the lines and shading :P (Will try to draw at least one a week).

After being pointed out that I am weak in my anatomy I decided to go and study the human anatomy. I am currently on my 3rd step of my 12 step study plan that I have made and it took me waaayyy longer than I had anticipated lol.
After the initial study of drawing from observation than three or more from imagination I went on and continued drawing until I reached at least 100 iterations of each study. I decided not to post the other 200 figures I've drawn for obvious reasons..

After the extensive study period, I wanted to take my new found understandings for a test drive and here are the results.
The following are images of a Korean ghost/monster/demon mythic figure called a 'Dokkebi'. This particular version is my re-imagination of the concept as the original real concept of the Dokkebi has been lost in time during the Japanese colonization of Korea. The current common known concept of it is a borrowed concept of the Japanese counterpart 'Oni' the red demon. So to break free of that misconception I studied some legends and attempted to reconstruct how the original dokkebi might have been like.
It is said that they wore human clothings (hanbok) and looked like humans except somewhat strange and had a horn shaped figure on the top of their heads. To break away from the Japanese demon concept I decided to take the horn and replace it with the traditional Korean hair knot called a 'Sang-tu' and focused on the part where it said 'they looked like humans except somewhat different' and took as an indication of malformation. Perhaps they were mutants with malformations or protrusions on their bodies, and the society had exiled them out of fear and misunderstanding of their conditions. They normally punished the bad and brought joy to the good when it benefits them so I thought of a Robinhood-esque band of bandits who hid their malformations with masks and acted like demons.

You latest korean character concepts look awesome, and it also seems as if you done some research into it before breaking into your version of the Dokkebi, interesting stuff...

The first and last pages of your SB are my favourite pages. :)
Your manga is interesting, and I can see you taking the advice of the other members into play. The characters in that last post are tonnes more interesting because of their anatomy, and posing- so you're definitely improving! ^^
The quick tattoo design is <3. I love the tigers you've drawn!

yo Dubu! man you have really started to come into your own, or at least your sketches are becoming alot cleaner, and easier to read. beautiful character work. i am wondering who are your biggest influences? you must love manga, what is your favorite story? i just started really getting into a couple new books lately. i dont know if youve heard of the "Vagabond" series, by Takehiko Inoue, but those books RULE! based on the fictional account of the life of Miyamoto Musashi. another one i just started which is pretty cool, is "Biomega", by Tsutomu Nihei. that ones very cool, gritty sci-fi gore all over the place. anyways, keep up the great work!! im looking forward to your updates!

Love the lineart man, so clean and fluid.
EDIT: Suddenly those female warrior concepts remind me of Kratos from God of War. Is that where you got the inspiration for them?

@NickyBeats // Thanks man!! :D Hmm..my influences.. as a child definitely Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), Inoue Takehiko was definitely one of my favorite artists but I don't think his style rubbed off to me that much. Throughout middle school to highschool the two of my biggest influences tho were Togashi Yoshihiro (YuYu Hakusho, HunterXHunter), and Minagawa Ryouji (Spriggan, Arms, D-Live). Recently as an artist the two people that I have been following mostly are Jason Brubaker (ReMIND) and Jaechul Park (www.paperblue.net).
@ stabby2486 // I've had a friend ask me that, but it didn't occur to me until he mentioned it. I guess the weapon style is kind of similar. Also I've had a friend tell me it reminded him of Bleach where Ichigo uses the string attached to his sword to fight as well.

Dubu don't worry about the education unless you think you need it [ what I mean is don't let anyone pressure you k ] your work is great the way it is. just keep it up and you'll be at the lvl you want to be at in know time. Man I'v been at this a freakin long time and you seem like ur a natural with the panel's and art. I just have the art. I get artist/block when it comes to panel's.

@Denki // thanks alot for the encouraging words! :D
@PeregrinTerk // Hehe the brush work was kind of a fluke as most of my drawings are. I still don't have a style set so each drawing tends to be different, but I'll definitely try to come up with another one someday

I really admire your stuff and on top of it, I'm astounded that you say you're a "wannabe". I love your attention to detail -- I've never been quite able to capture that in my drawing. Honestly you inspire me.
Keep up the good work.

@eekolite // Thanks for the vote :) #8 is kicking my ass though :/
@The941 // Thank you :) the latest piece I really tried to pay attention to detail. Made me too tired and I ended up just blurring the entire background lol.
@SageTso // The calligraphy was pretty difficult to figure out at first. Had to redraw the lines 4-5 different times since I wasn't used to drawing calligraphy with a tablet. Made everything look too fake hehe.

I like. A LOT. Why are you joining the army? One year military service or something like that? It's a waste of your time! Some of your drawings remind a bit of Akihiko Yoshida btw, which is quite awesome.
