besides drawing do you have any other goals/activities that you spent a good deal of time on? Do you think it gets in the way of your drawing, art, painting, etc..
If you don't feel like reading much all you need to read is the above^
I play guitar and wonder if it might get in the way of my drawing career.
I want to become a composer and classical guitar player (i wanted a piano but i live in a small apartment with 5 family members) at the same time draw and learn physics...i just might triple major when i go to college...(will it be tough?)
I am working on a guitar piece which i am always waiting for the right tune in my head to come along and i write it down. With physics i don't really do much about it but i read books months ago but put it back down because it was too complicated (most of the stuff i didn't even learn in school yet) but i am a very good student in a crappy school (public city business school with over 2500 kids and i regret my past ignorance because it led me to my current school...i don't want to become a business man:nohope:).
i dropped business class for my senior year and picked up 2 AP 2 science....they don't have music teachers in this school and i can draw better than my art teacher....yeck
of course that will mean i will not be more talented in drawing due to focus on other subjects..right ?
do you just draw...draw...draw...?(besides the routine activities of course)
I am concerned that i might not suffice in my drawing...shall I abandon a subject?

Yes, but I love the other things that I do. It means that my successes will take longer, and I accept that.
It all depends upon what your time frames are.

A good friend of mine Cynthia Shepard (http://www.fleshdepartment.com/) is not only a very talented artist, but also plays some friggen awesome music, does a bit of modeling, has some very cool photography, and does graphic design for her day job. She's about as multi-talented as I've met and she does each one at a high degree. How does she do it? She actually works on each one as the inspiration hits, and doesn't seem to spend her time worrying about any of them being a waste of time. Also probably massive amounts of karma for just being an awesome person.
Don't worry about it. If you have the drive to improve in both you'll do fine.

I listen to A LOT of music (always searching for new artists/genres), but that doesn't really compete with drawing.
There really is almost nothing else I do besides drawing. I find it immensely fulfilling.

I really enjoy cooking, sometimes I wish I had gonne more to the cooking world, than the art world, but I still prefer drawing over cooking.
I listen to A LOT of music (always searching for new artists/genres), but that doesn't really compete with drawing.
There really is almost nothing else I do besides drawing. I find it immensely fulfilling.
I enjoy that too, discover a new band or artist, look up they're story, the story of the album or song, organise the album with correct information, it is actually really fun to do.

I don't really "do" much else. I play games, work out, read (history and some science stuff mostly) I can do some very basic web design and I went to school for graphic design. I used to be into martial arts but quit. Being surrounded by all sorts of nature and access a provincial park, countless trails and to two camps you'd think I'd be outside all the time, but in all honesty I find nature pretty boring. I do help my uncle split wood up at the lake from time to time.
I'm probably the most boring person you'll meet :)

I was sort of in the same boat as you.
In highschool i played competative tennis ranked 54 in state 3rd in highschool tennis team, and i loved physics/astronomy, and art. so i needed to pick one of the 3 to continue because i knew i would be ok at all of them but not the best at each. I ended up choosing art because my brother was a programer and we decided to create games eventually.
so i have droped tennis (although i miss it alot) and i figured the only reason i liked physics and astronomy was because of the visualizing of all that awesome stuff, might as well just do the art. Now im a graphic designer while still pursuing traditional and digital art.
It's really your choice if you think your good enough to be awesome at all three. Personally i can only be good at one thing at a time or else i get too distracted thinking about other stuff.

I'm a huge music nerd. I collect CDs and vinyl records mostly. I have around 600+ CDs and about 400+ records
I'm also a big gaming nerd. I love playing different types of games and looking at different qualities of them, what makes them good, what makes them bad, how to improve on it, etc

I did graphic design when I was a wee Jovian (err, I guess that was rather recently). But I suppose that could almost be lumped in with art? I dunno.
I used to be really good at piano, but I haven't had access to one in quite awhile, so I dunno how I'd be, now. I started to play guitar, a little while ago. Just teaching myself songs, here and there.
I'd kind of like to get into acting. Nothing serious, that'd get in the way of drawing, but I wouldn't mind trying out for films/tv shows, had I the opportunity. Or voice acting, or something. Being on South Park would be awesome. haha

I'm studying Evolutionary Biology full time at my local university, so yeah, it does take time away from drawing, but it sure is worth it.

I do a tiny bit of martial arts. Muay thai. But I think sparring would be too much for me, probably just going to scale it back to just working out and eating healthy. And traveling! I love traveling. And writing. I might pick up violin again or learn guitar.
I've been all-art all-the-time for a few years now and while it is really fulfilling I need to have something else to do too.

Yup. All were/are sports based: karate, boxing, kickboxing, bodybuilding, strongwoman, power lifting.
Competitive in several of those, too. ETA: last couple of years, primary focus has been art; you could say, my competitive focus has been moved to there. Still do some of that stuff for recreation - it helps the creative thing out tremendously.

I'm trying to get into shape by the time my unemployment ends. Since that might not be for another 7-12 months, (insane but true) I figure I control my destiny.
If I'm not working next Summer I hope to get an Amtrak railpass and see a lot of the country I haven't already seen, including San Diego for comicon.

A lot of time goes into my university studies, where I'm studying architecture. It devours my free time!
Otherwise, I love playing the piano (practiced for 12 years), reading (mostly ancient history, mythology and such), doing yoga, studying all kinds of trivia (I almost know all the capitals+flags in the world...so useless, yet so fun) and I also love travelling, when I have the chance. A pretty random bag of things, here.

I am, constantly, doing something artistic...unless I'm at work.
I build models, both kit based and scratchbuilt, some light sculpting, getting into painting, love drawing, woodworking,....Heck, I'll do anything creative.
What gets in the way of all that...two things: work and cutting the yard/snow blowing(depending on the time of year. ;) )

Eh, personally, I guess a lot of my non-art activities are ocean-related. I spend a lot of time fishing, sea kayaking, cooking seafood, and keeping an aquarium full of weird creatures that I find on the beach after hurricanes.
Currently, my aquarium contains a truly massive giant sea hermit crab that I found last year. It is very lively and quite creepy. I'll have to post a video of it sometime because I'm sure it could inspire some really sick alien concepts.
I don't think other hobbies are any detriment to artwork. It's healthy to have other interests, and those interests can often serve as inspirations for your art.

Also i just bought a PS3 a few days ago and have been playing Fat Princess and just picked up the new Metal Gear tonight, so i assume that new game will be a new hobby.

Useally take a nice walk at least once a day try and take a different path everytime. Occationally ill watch some anime or read some manga. I enjoy going to the library and seeing if anythings cool around to read or look at.
Too much ill get caught up in reading things online, just way to much information online. You read about something that links to such and such link which links to those links which leads to that.

As Robert De Niro might say, I'm feeling a lot of distance.
There was a time I did a lot of martial arts, not only the Chinese internal stuff, but saber fencing. (13th So. Cal. Div. Qual. 95) I enjoyed V4 sport bikes, moshing, and roller hockey for a while.
Regrettably, now I mostly watch my law firm slowly collapse, I serve as a volunteer temporary judge way too much, I drive to Arizona to get the mail my loser brother can't manage to forward to me in exchange for utterly failing to pay even for the utilities he uses, I mail a shitload of business cards out to mailing lists I derive from internet chamber of commerce sites, and I apply for jobs (by my estimation at least 720 since I was last laid off in 1995). Just try to fill out an eight page job application asking about things you did up to thirty years ago ("use additional pages if necessary"). It becomes a way of life. I have a frikken job application kit and spend whole weekends on it.

I play guitar. I studied classical guitar and music composition in college for almost 3 years before dropping out. These days I mostly play my electric guitar.
I also like to take walks, on which I often collect dead things, then frame them and hang them in my kitchen...

I'm architecture student and it is very time consuming, energy draining activity. If you combine this with being drawing fanatic then other things in life get very distant. I totally became stay-at-home person in those last few years which is not that good for my social skills.
Other activities would be reading different books, playing with cat, taking walks, going to swimming pool. I used to write some stuff mainly for pen&paper RPG games. Right now it got dominated by drawing but I might go back to this after some time. I found out that writing stimulates my imagination for drawing and vice versa.

I play guitar. Metallica, Led Zeppelin, and Randy Rhoads, mostly. I play accoustic, because electric is noisy, and for the past while I've lived in apartments, so that won't do. I have a tiny, cheap amp, too, so it doesn't even sound good. I play the ukulele, too, and write riffs, melodies, and occasionally complete pieces of music for both. I have some cheap recordings of me playing an electric ukulele, which I'll post if anyone's interested.
When I'm living in, or visiting, California, I also surf. I'm a card-carrying member of the Pismo Beach Longboarders Club.
I also read. A lot. And write.
Doing this stuff does take up time that I could be devoting to art, but so what? Life is meant to be enjoyed, and I enjoy these things.
ADD: And Burtzum, you'd like my dad. He's always finding animal skulls, sealing them in resin, then hanging them from the rear view mirror in his VW Bus.

I've been sick for a while and haven't done much of anything :sadcheerleader: but I'm starting to feel a lot better so this week I hope I'll get back to the gym :cheerleader:.
It seems there are a lot of Martial Artists here! Martial Arts has always been my thing. Where I lived before there was only a few karate schools so I studied Shorin Ryu until my instructor retired and then Shotakan until I moved. Now it's Jujitsu and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!!!! I can't wait to get back although rolling around on the floor with a bunch of sweaty guys is not as sexy as it sounds :teeth:.
I also want to train for Ironman in the next couple of years but I haven't figured out how I can fit it all in. Seriously though, what could be more fun than paying nearly $600 to swim bike and run yourself to exhaustion... Maybe that should be my "Battle of the Sexes" theme. :tihi:
Oh yeah, and I have a full time job... and I like that too... I need more time or less sleep...
The bottom line is I'm going to try to enjoy as many things as possible as long as it's fun but I'm afraid something has to give sooner or later. Perhaps that's why I've been so sick? Hope you can decide better tham I can...

keeping an aquarium full of weird creatures that I find on the beach after hurricanes.
Thats awesome. I'd like to see a vid of that crab. Or a pic at least.
I had some typical small hermit crab pets for a while when I was little. Also, I remember one time me and my dad rowed out to a small "island" (could only walk on it at low tide) near my grandpa's house in the Florida keys... I collected a bunch of shells in my pockets that I thought looked interesting. After we row back and I get back to the house, I notice a tickling sensation against my legs. My pockets were full of crabs. :P
Then there was that time that I was trying to catch a crab of the non-hermit variety with a butterfly net... I was following it along in the shallow water... waiting for the right moment to strike... he pauses... and wham! I slam the net down and then all of a sudden there is a big thrashing in the water... turns out a flounder was buried right under the crab and I had caught both of them.
The ocean/beach is indeed a fun place. Had my first scuba experience just a couple months ago, out on the reef down at the Florida keys again.
And I never get tired of digging up mole-crabs. :) Really cool shapes. Cute little buggers. They're like beach-dwelling cicadas.

I work, go to art school and fuck around most of the time. My other hobbies would be road cycling, rock climbing, hiking, camping, swimming. I like to shoot guns, and play video games too. I also have to cook for myself and I have found that takes up too much time.
I am trying to draw and paint more though. Got to keep healthy though!

I blog and work in web design/development - Which is still kind of creative, but also lets me tap into some code. I like it because it keeps the other side of the brain fresh. :)
I find that 2 things is an optimal amount (Eg Art + another interest). Doing 1 thing is too narrow and doing 3 things is too much.
Having said that I'm looking to pickup photography and have a growing interest in film... Sigh. Too many things!

Hahaha. Burtzum, my home is also full of dead animals. My mother collects them, and it's beginning to look like a natural history museum in here. We've got the skin of a giant puffed-up pufferfish, a stuffed toad playing a harp, a cabinet full of crab shells, and some shadowboxes (full of jewel beetles, etc.)
Here's a picture of the crab. He doesn't look too big here, but the whelk shell he's in is about the size of a queen conch shell. (about cabbage-sized?) Unfortunately you can't see the anemones on the back of his shell in this shot. They feed off of fish pieces he misses(he's a sloppy eater), and he moves them when he moves shells. I'll try to get the video at some point, but I have to edit it first and I don't have the right program, so it may be a while before it ends up floating around the lounge.

this is cool...
well for starters, I always loved drawing. I started drawing years ago, when I was supposed to be playing outdoors with my friends ( I can still remember the time I was drawing and I can hear the the laughters of my friends outside).
Then I got into sports. I was part of Volleyball team in highschool. Was also playing table tennis and basketball but not that serious. Then I fell in love math and science for some time and even joined some quiz bee competition. I was such a rascal and a bummer and I didn't take it seriously.
Then I went to fine arts school and did a lot of fine art stuffs (painting drawing of different kinds of media), but not much sculptures.
Then I got into digital arts migrated permanently. No more mess, oil spill, washing brush and stuff. Yey!
Along the way I also learned to play a bit of guitar. But again not in a conventional way. I'm ok to know a few chords and sing. Yes sing. Used to be part of a choir group affiliated with our school.
And now I stumble upon beat making, and how you can produce music digitally. It was a whole new world for me. Ever since then, I've playing around Sibelius (since I like to compose by notes), Reason and Beatmaker for iPhone. I also got a few compositions lined up, one with simple guitar chords. I also used to write poetries and incorporate then in my paintings, and it helps me when composing songs. That took up a lot of time from drawing, sketching and painting.
But since my computer just crashed, all my WIPs, sketch and painting, beats and music are all gone :(
now I spend my time doing graphics design at work and sketching traditionally. :P

I tottaly agree on the brain thing.
Me too, Art + Computer Stuff... and yikes, alot more of... learning "how to do stuff" and move on to another "how to do stuff". When im stressed, Art is what i do to let out all emotions free, and when i feel the opposite, learning new things is what i do.
So far, like to sew, cook craft all the girls stuff as usual... main intention, learn and share to the world!
