Hey all. Ive been hanging in the Self Portrait sub-forum for 3 months, doing one after the other, trying to improve.
These are my last few. My sp's were really rough at the start but they're slowly getting a little better.
This sketchbook will get me doing things other than self portraits. In theory.

Yay! I get to be first! Sorry, I didn't get a chance to comment in your other thread but I've noticed it and you have improved a lot. I'm excited to see you try some new stuff!

Looking good!
I'd say, don't be afraid to use extreme/sharp transitions in light, midtone and shadow and darker shades in general. I think the sketch one has this area covered. Looking forward to more stuff, keep on practicing!

You're getting better and better. The first one in your last post looks a bit like Chris Barrie (sp?) from Red Dwarf :D
Human-like... definitely not just a couple of flat face drawings.

Nice job on the face in the first one. :) The skin looks a little plastic-ey, though. Check out Promethues' tutorial here (http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm), and think about using a greater variety of colors in the skin.

You started a new SB? The Moleskin is definitely the stronger of the two. The lightsaber looks fine, you've got all the basics down. You just need to intensify the shadows and reflected green light. You could also put some texture work over it.
Rock on!!!

I think that jedi sp could use a darker redder background. It would make your head and the color green pop much more. Just keep rockin them man! Dont be afraid to draw a few small still life drawing to keep testing your eye. You are moving along quickly!

NicG – Ahh NicG, I'll always remember you were first. :) Thanks for commenting and encouraging.
Rotor – Thanks Rotor, from day one pushing values has been my problem, Ill keep trying.
Karein – Thanks for the kind words. :)
Granny – Haha, I’m really getting USed TO just SEEING CAPS.
P sage – Thanks allot man.
Jailhouse – Thanks Matty, that’s really encouraging. Slow to update but at least it’s up here.
Blonde Bomber – Thanks BB. :)
Virus – You’re always good for a bit of support Virus, thank you.
Cacodaemonia - Thanks for the link, that’s awesome. I had that downloaded and lost in a file, you made me take time to go through it. Appreciated.
KromNz – Thought YOU’D like it. Haha. Thanks brother.
Conte – I picked out two sp’s from my other thread and didn’t really think about the fact that they were ‘like’ poses. Thanks for your nice words and great comment on my profile. Hows the weather in Kazakhstan?
Granma – Toooo slow I know.
Peetaer – Thanks Peetaer. That was only my third Photoshop drawing and I don’t know what I’m doing, so tips like yours are very useful to me thank you.
Sirkenneth – Great tips Ken, I know nothing about color and that’s the stuff I need to hear. Thanks very much.
Spect – Thanks for spammin’ with my favourite pic. I’m gonna use that one on a Christmas card.
Karein – Haha, here it is.
This is my ‘take’ on Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom. He is in the robes and jewels of ancient Indian royalty and holds aloft a flaming sword of wisdom. His body constantly radiates golden light and he is supposed to be “everything beautiful condensed into one”, but I couldn’t really pull that off!! :)
This is my 4th Photoshop pic and the 1st that’s not a self portrait. Trying to draw from imagination is really new to me.

Haha, extreeeme :D
I like your Manjushri. Drawing from imagination feels incredibly difficult at first - it's like, I dunno, tightrope walking only someone has taken away your beloved balance stick and you have also forgotten how to walk. Maybe, anyway. I can't say I've ever been in that particular predicament.
WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS that it's a totally different skill and you're doing pretty good! The more you draw from reference the more you'll be able to pull from your imagination when you need to. I bet if you spent a while doing studies of trees, of cloth, of swords and jewelry and badass jets etc, you'd be able to come back to these ideas and it'd be like a lightbulb coming on - I know how to draw this now!!!
It'll all come as you branch out and draw more. At least, that has been my experience :)

I can never draw from imagination, even though i've got lots of it. It's frustrating to see it all to my head and not translate it on a canvas. D:

I see your fingers have healed up nicely.
If you can already draw the body and hands that well from your head, then we are all pretty much screwed!
Insert stock do some -bridgman/loomis/hogarth studies answer.
Draw more from life! Hands feet, get naked and go crazy. Or even better find someone to get naked for you. You are proof of how beneficial life drawing is so do mooooore, maybe have a go at some of the challenges on here as well.

Hey man! I would recomend doing some study in perspective as you get into drawing from mind. It really helps to understand the space you are creating something in. Everything can be built out of a cube, cone, or cylinder-if you can put them into perspective and light then you can make anything out of your head. Keep up the good work!!

Liz Edwards – Thanks Lizzy. What you’re saying has to be true, lots of drawing and studies and things’ll get easier. Thanks for the encouragement and thanks for taking the time to comment and hurry up and get internet back!! :(
Shamandalie – Thanks Shamandalie. I’ve started using reference more for my “imagination” drawings after reading that it’s ok and that most people do. I’m a beginner and I always thought that imagination meant “without” reference but that was like torture. Using a bunch of magazine, book and web photos to construct an imaginative scene is what I’m trying to do now. Oh, and I like your new look.
Granmassa – Ahhhhh, the inspiration.
Dan Lambert – No Dan, they haven’t. I drew this one with the pen in my mouth. :D
I’m waiting on my Amazon order with Hogarth and Bridgeman. Aussies have to use Amazon USA. The last order took 4 months because it went to Austria instead of Australia!! I’ve been drawing for 5 months so that puts it into perspective – I waited my whole drawing career for my last lot of books. Thanks for the advice. I’m asking everyone I know to get naked now. I’m loosing friends though.
Alesoun – I did let ‘em down Alee. Next time. Or three times after that. :)
Jatherip – Actually I have problems with everything! :D Good advice mate. I followed your advice and this soldier pic was a study from some photos and I can see that doing this will “teach” lots of things. Thank you.
Sirkenneth – Thanks Ken. I’ve got so much to learn and perspective is near the top of the list. I got that Carl Dobsky perspective download during the sale weekend and I’m gonna study it soon. Time, time, time.
NicG – Thanks Nicky G. :)
First time using greyscale for anything and this is a self portrait from a mirror. This is my innocent and confused look. I use it on my wife all the time but it rarely works. I loved greyscale and I’m going to do another next ‘cause it was so much fun to do.
And as mentioned above, I used some reference photos for the soldier dude.

Hey man, LOVE your progress. You've improved so much since that first self-portrait.
Simple studies and (of course) practice will get you tons better at drawing from imagination. And when you add value to those, try to imagine the shading as depth, not color. Don't be afraid of it either. There's a happy medium :)
Keep up the great work! You're really showing improvement.

Your Bridgman studies are really very clean, they look great. I'm not great at crits, but I would watch how you put down some of your figures, The weight distibutuion on some of them look a little off. Take the second woman for example, She looks like if she put any more weight on her right foot she would topple over.
But it is great to see some studies, doesn't matter if they are boring, it's a sure fire way to see improvement. Your going great though, so keep pushing :)

That cat!!!! It lured me into your sketchbook! D:
Nice bridgeman studies and selfportraits. You seem to be getting shapes and form down pretty well. watch your saturation in your digital paintings. Seems a bit strong. More studies in colour and light (and not just from photos, but from life - apples! everyone draws apples!) and you'll get an understanding of that more.

You have a very consistent likeness in your self portraits. I like the goofy happy expression with the light saber portrait. One suggestion for the background you can experiment with the texture or dark gradient to draw more interest. Realistically it's rare to have one flat color for an environment.

Thanks for the tsunami heads up a couple of weeks ago too. Lol, not that I expected anything, it was low tide, and there's a sort or reef at our beach anyway! October 14th, 2009, 09:26 AM
The structures look pretty good - nice sense of three-dimensionality. :) Your colors are what's bothering me. You've got what I'm guessing is a white light on a pale yellow skull with a red backdrop. I think the skull looks way too yellow, with no real variation in color. The dark parts of the skull are just a darker yellow, when they should be leaning toward the opposite temperature of the light source. Also, there should be more red bounce light coming from the surroundings and affecting the skull.

I have been drawing constantly but nothing worth showing.
I've been trying to learn to draw human form from all angles after watching an awesome David Finch figure drawing dvd and I've done loads of pages of sketching in pencil. I tried scanning some but it looks dirty and fingerprinty - it was never meant for show, just training.

Hi there! Don't ever be embarrassed to post your work. It's all about the process, a journey. We all learn by doing mistakes. It's the only way we can become better.
You should be embarrassed if not working at all :) and that's it!
What you did so far shows your dedication to grow as an artist. Just keep it up. There are many resources on internet, many books you can get from bookstore, videos, etc. It's all up on you. Read, study, practice :)
danlambert
May 25th, 2010, 09:08 AM
That's some gooooood stuff man, and an even better attitude! You'll be looking back in a few months and be seeing plenty of improvement if you keep up what you're doing.
Doing the gesture is one thing, but having a pose in mind or a character in mind for the pose is an even better way to do it. One thing I can suggest is that instead of just outlining, draw in the major forms as well (although on 2nd look it looks like you might be doing that in those lighter lines so feel free to disregard that :p)
Proportions are overall pretty damn good and where there is foreshortening in the poses it's handled well!
So keep it up!
And post more you slacker! (pot calling the kettle black I know, but this is about you!)
Take it easy sir,

Not sure why, but your thread didn't show up as updated on my cp thing? weird?
Hooooowever...that is one badass skull sir. Got some nice form going on, and great values! It's from life I take it?
Who do I have to kill to get a skull to draw from life?
Take it easy man, it's good to see you updating more.

Thanks Granny, Nic, Snootchy and Dan the man.
I tried a Magic Man (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=184254&page=13)style experiment to learn about light and form. The whole sketchbook is AMAZING but checkout post #383
Also two attempts at copying a picture of a bust of Benjamin Franklin.

August 26th, 2010, 02:34 PM
good stuff as always, and great to see you persevering with stuff. It takes quite a dedicated person to say "right, I just spent however many hours drawing this bust, but I reckon I could do better.I know, I'll draw it again!"
Although the proportions are off on the first attempt, the forms are reading well consistently between both, and you've got some nice shapes of value. What I would suggest now is turning the page and trying to recreate that bust or another head in a similar position and lighting from your head, just to see how much you're actually retaining with these studies. It's frustrating, and really good fun!
On another note, how the fuck was I unaware of Magic Man's sketchbook? It's incredible, so thank you for that! That study is looking pretty good man, although the dark values on the shadow areas would suggest quite a strong light source, so maybe a more defined and darker cast shadow.
Take it easy man,
Dan

Thanks dan. I am trying a completely different way of drawing and I'm just getting used to it so the 1st BenF was way out proportionaly but I got him the 2nd time. You're right about the lighting in that "thing". I've been studying lighting for a couple of weeks and the box things in this post might be better.
Thanks Snootchy and cgaddict. :)

Hey Snootch. Thanks for your encouragement as always man. I'm hanging to do stuf like you and everyone else with awesome imagination and skills but I'm still a baby drawer. I'll keep trying to improve both technique and imagination, give me another year or two, I'm patient.
Haha, thanks vanaga. :D
Thanks Istmin.
I haven't been posting the stuff I've been playing around with because it isn't worth showing, just training drills. I'm lucky enough that recently I started to be tutored by Magic Man (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=184254), great artist, great teacher and great person. I didn't want to sully his reputation by saying he was my teacher but he assures me it's ok to say, haha. Remember that if I'm still a ratbag in a year or so, it is NOT Magic Mans fault. Heh Heh.
Not having great luck with friends lately. The latest drama being that one of my closest mates died last week, unexpectedly, suddenly, young.
Just starting to learn a little about colour. I copied this from a photo and I guess the main point was to get the colour and values right without using the picker. I know there is heaps to do to it but it won't be done, I got what I wanted from it. This took me about three hours but I swear that just a few weeks ago it'd take 3 nights of three hours each so I'm getting a little faster if nothing else. :)

dood jig that last study is awesome, i really like how some parts are focused and others blurred, i think for me at least that's what painting is all about, the edges and as for colors, don't think need to stress just keep using it, it'll come naturally to u and experiment but i'm still blown away by ur eye for proportions and value
i said it before, i'd take one of ur sketches over 1000 of my lousy sketches anyday cuz there's just that much more substance in ur sketches, so even if it takes u 3hrs to do it, still kick ass dood
and sorry to hear about ur friend, i hope everything is good with u

Hi Nicky G. Thanks mate. Thanks for your constant support.
Hey Snootchy, it feels better when you're back in town. :)

alright the jig (sorry couldn't resist) is up, what are you on or taking?! seriously now i got to put out like 10,000 sketches to match one of these kick ass illustrations ur getting into! I could write a gajillion things about what i like but I'm just gonna say this, you are one talented bastardo (<--------i mean this in a good way)
the more i look at it the more it seems like it's real, i will point the thing that gets me about this last sketch is the believability of the materials in terms of the texture of the suit or the shiny metallic finish on the helm, really tip stuff dood, look forward to the next kickass post!

Hi Jigje :D Thanks for visitin and I've seen Sebastians Caricatures briefly on google searches but not known his name, thanks for the fresh inspiration :D Norman Rockwell was the first caricaturist who inspired me.
Anyways your work is amazing! especially your sp's and Bobafet :D Also love the spacetiger, he's quite suave. You doing any caricatures yourself?

Hey Snootchy baby. Thanks mate. I'm just trying to spend a bit more time on stuff and it helps me to learn the things I'm studying. My aim is to be able to spit out 5 masterful speedies per day like you do. haha.
Hey angel in the ook. Thanks for droping by mate. Sebastian is a freak, isn't he? I've never tried to do a caricature but I'm tacking it onto the long list of things to do. :)
Hi Dreadful Look. You're right about the tiger chest. I never meant to go quite that far with the pic and I ran out of steam and posted it when things like that could/should have been finished off. Thanks for the crit mate, thanks for visiting.

Hey bro!
Wow.. I honestly don't know what to crit really.. you are just so good. One thing I haven't seen in your studies yet are still lifes, correct me if I'm wrong though.
You may want to consider painting or drawing some still lifes, but what works for me may not be good for you, so it's just an idea which may help you with your colours..
Keep well for now bro and have fun with your next study. =)

Magic Man - Thanks Daz. I owe you big time mate, the sessions with you taught me more than I could learn by myself in 2 years. Thanks for everything Master Magic Man.
snootchy - Thanks snootch, you're way too kind mate. I get satisfaction from doing something I like but there's no denying that it's great when someone else likes it. Thanks for your constant encouragement. Seriously appreciate it and I'm always inspired by your awesome sketchbook.
vanaga - Wow, thanks vanaga. The whole thing was done using Magic Mans chalk brush (find a link to it through his sketchbook). The last pass was done with a brush from a magazine cd. It makes 5-6 lines when you drag it, I just used it to fur it up. I'll email the file if you want it, just pm me.
Kungfoowiz - Hey mate, thanks so much for visiting. You're right about still lifes. Apart from the skull stuff and self portraits, I haven't done that much. My to do list is ridiculously long but more still life studies are in there somewhere.
MattGamer - Thank you man. Those made up block studies taught me loads about lighting annnnd they're great fun. Do 'em k?
NicG - Trust you to be the first. I must admit that I got allot of mileage out of it myself when I was drawing it.
Benjy - Haha, thanks Benjy. You have to be pretty quick to beat NicG to a ribald remark.
LAL - Thanks LAL. Glad you like it, thanks for visiting.

Heeeey Daz. Wow man, thank you. Yes, all hand rendered. The old-school caltex logo is a photo, a blur filter on the wheels and a soft light layer at about 30% opacity at the end. They're the only 3 "tricks", apart from your secret chalk brush that is of course available from your blog. Haha. Thanks so much for your post man. Hope you're doing well, catch up soon mate.
