How many sketchbooks have you filled up?

Im just wondering how many you guys have filled up. Puddnhead has filled up over 60 I think. I think I heard lung say he's filled up 18 (could be wrong though). Even though I'm ashamed to say it, I have only completed one. I've had many where, I doodle in, but never complete. So for the record one, Im working on two.

So how many?Oh and btw, how many years have you been drawing/painting in them?

I wonder how many Jason, Android, Prom, and el coro have filled up?

kinda stopped keeping track once I started using marker paper, print paper, and napkins ...

certainly over 30, ... but I do have a stack of stray papers that came in at about 20 lbs.

i think ive filled about 7-8
but thats over a loooong period of time...my newest sketchbook is shaping up nicely tho, im supprised at how fast its filling up

Currently working on No.s 10, 11 and 12 (different sizes and paper). Started in August/September 2000.

Depends on how many pages your sketchbooks have.. I almost filled my 105 page sketchbook in the last 3 months and another 20 page one with ref and imagination drawings. I usually don't do life studies in them these go on loose pages. Last month i filled about 100 pages of studies.

filling 18? thats believable. hmm myself i have filled 2 1/2. 1st one has 70 pages 2nd has 100 and the one im working on now has 200ish. eee that seems very little imo but for a while i took a break from my sketchbook and was drawing on looseleaf. mmm i have been drawing for 8 months in sketchbooks and seriously for probably 4 months. it shows too, i look back at my first sketchings from before and they were a lot of ideas that couldnt be put out without correct anatomy. well enough jabbering...

btw what does it mean when ppl say a5 and a4 size sketchbooks? i was always lost on that one. also, when you guys use soft pencils like 6b and so on in your sketchbook, doesnt it get smudge around? thanks.

Hi Lioness,

A4 and A5 are european standards. In fact they are named DIN A4 (DIN=Deutsche Industrienorm = German industrial norm).
A4 = 29,7 cm x 21 cm = 11,7 in x 8,3 in
A5 (half the size) = 21 cm x 14,85 cm = 8,3 in x 5,8 in

All sizes are based on the square meter (A0 = 118,8 cm x 84 cm) and some mathematics I can´t translate :D.

And for the soft pencils take simple hairspray to fix it ;)

Ummm, never ever use hairspray: it smells awful and you never get the protection of a real fixative spray.

Well, i've used in the last 2 years 3 sketchbooks, like bound ones. I hate sketching on paper that isnt ina book, must be a psychological thing. Wow, i need to start gettin together a good portfolio for art college, damn highschool allmost done...:chug:

How many sketchbooks have I filled up? Zero. Looks as if I am the abnormal one here. I didn't use sketchbooks. I find myself using canvas instead.

I'd say since I hit grade 9, I've filled almost 20. I'm in grade 12 now, long long way to go =)

I have only manage to complete one too. I send the papers for binding so it's a 300 pages thick sketchbook. The funny thing about it is that it look like a bible when I carry it around in my arm. It took me slightly more than a year to complete it. Only recently just started on my 2nd book. Although I do have some smaller sketchbooks where I take down notes and loose papers where I doodle/ studies but I consider this one the main book where I kept most important drawings.

I have filled about 25 since High School..... around 1992 or 93.

Some are large, others are small, a few may not be completely filled (Like when I had a "graphic design" sketchbook for my high school Graphic Design Classes.....

It feels nice though to go back and look through them sometimes. Boy, did I ever have a lot to learn! Still do, but it is amazing to see how much you grow over a period of 10 years.

Ive filled up two, working on no. 3. all 70-100 pages, 8x4 inches. Mostly I use copier paper. Ive used about a ream(500) sheets of that and I got 1000 more sheets for christmas. Sketchbooks are too exspensive for me, at least the ones ive seen for sale. Two bucks fifty for 500 sheets works well enough for me. plus its easy to scan!

It's hard for me to say, heh.

I've got 3 going right now, and 1 complete. I find the pages tend to get warped because I like to experiment with paint and mixed medium. As well, I've gone through a little over 1 marker pad, about 1 large roll of trace paper, and about a half dozen illustration boards (boards for school work).

Although I'm trained as a print designer, my income is earned as a web designer, and my hobby is Fine Art, so my thumbnails tend to be very rough.

the sick thing about kevin (puddinhead) is that he did 60 in a 2 years!!! :eek: i'm working on 2 right now. i've got a standard size 8.5 x 11 and a smaller canson one that i'm loving right now. plus numerous sheets of printer paper. can't beat the price on that 2.99 for 500 sheets, front and back that's 1000 pages!! hahahaha. well back to work....

I think in the last 6 years I've filled up 15 14"x17" sketchbooks, soon to be 16. 8 11"x14" sketchbooks, about 6 large newsprint pads... aaaaand... that's it I think. Yeah. Peace ;p

um quantity, like a badge of honor here eh?

well, before i had any idea of what i was doing i'd finish sketchbooks really soon, like draw a big picture of an eye or an arm on one page, and go to the next page, no not the back of the page, but the next page. i filled a few books that way. by sr year of highschool, i figured these sketchbooks were costing me alot of money, so much so that art supplies ended up costing more than my beloved comicbooks. so poof! i seperated doodle books ( with mostly quick drawings) on cheap paper and sketch/work books with more idea driven sketches. during college, my friend bay (tiktok on the forums) introduced me to bookbinding, and after destroying a few books to see how it's done, i decided to bind my own sketchbooks. ( i've filled about 8, these books last a while). it's really helpful starting from scratch! there is value to what you're doing before you even start drawing!
i'd rather get one really great drawing done than 10 sketchbooks finished.

@ capt.harlock ahh in ever knewww, thanks :D btw i looked at the spectrum 10 today, i saw fosters, sweets and puddns work, i was just suprised he put his name was "puddnhead" instead of his real name.

@Jrr, ah i see, yea i noticed that a lot of pages or spaces in my first sketchbook were very empty, not because i wanted to finish but because i had this thing where if it was in there it was final instead of a sketch.

hmm i was thinking of getting a sketchbook tomorrow, though you guys saying using copy paper is fine makes me think....that yes maybe i should save the cash and use my copy paper. anyway, i have literally 10 packs sitting around because of "getting a free case with buying your scanner" ha which is nice. thanks for the idea guys :D

*Jrr: i think maybe you misunderstood? it's not about quantity, it think how many sketchbooks you fill with GOOD, PRODUCTIVE art is important as it reflects on how much you draw draw draw. and i too would rather fill 1 with good stuff (not doodles) then fill 10 with junk. also i'm curious on book binding and i'm too lazy to google. :rolleyes:

I think puddnhead filling 60 sketchbooks in 2 years though goes to show the concept of "every artist has 10000 bad drawings in him". Not saying that they were bad drawings though =) Just saying how it shows how important practise is.
