Hi there

I'm hoping that this SB will kick start me into doing more practice and hopefully get better at environments, I'm gonna try and do weekly updates! thanks for dropping by. :)

Shows us the vastness of nature!

I really like the first and the last one,I think it's difficult to draw trees, you did a great job on those :)

Hey these are great, man! The first one and the 4th from the top, the one with lava is just great! You really found some sweet colors for those. Keep up the good work!

I have to say, im not that much into Environments but these are great, the first and last post especially. the sense of scale in the first is awesome, and that hive looking thing in the last is a nice touch. Keep up the good work.

These are all very interesting. I envy your environments and your painting skills. I can't wait to see more.

Is that a warnet nest from Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa? Is that lava flow on planet Arieki?

I miss being addicted to Ultima. I haven't really been in the zone since the early nineties, and I was hoping Tabula Rasa would do it for me, but in spite of a terrific effort by Destination Games, it wasn't able to absorb me like Ultima did when I was in my teens. I'm just so jaded now. Being seriously addicted to a computer RPG was a peak experience for me, and to think there are actually clinics to help people get out of such addictions. I want to get back in!!!

Sorry for the digression... Your enviros remind me of the concept work for Tabula Rasa. They're kind of speedy looking, but if you spent some more time with them I'm sure you could take them to a similar level of polish. Sci-fi is cool. So is fantasy. I look forward to seeing you post some more enviros in the future.

Palidoozy
August 28th, 2009, 09:50 PM
Awesome work with color, especially on the last one! I like the guy looking like he's gonna poke the gigantic glowing sack with a stick.

PxelSlayer
August 28th, 2009, 10:37 PM
These look really good, I love the feeling of vast space on all of them. If you don`t mind, I`d like to suggest adding a focal point on your future ones, a part with sharper brush strokes and a bit more detailed? I`m sure pretty soon your enviros will look breathtaking, just keep working on it! ;)

Hi guys hope you are all well :teeth:

G A I A - yeah trees are difficult, good way is not to get bogged down with every single leave and just go for overall shape and form, cheers for your comment.

alexson - thanks dude, gonna try and update

Izer - glad you like them, that last one was alot of fun to do

kvanzant - haahhaah thanks man, but i still got to improve alot, hope you visit back!

Dahami - yep i know that feeling, I used to play WOW, but i could feel it was taking up too much time so had to quit (sounds like a drug or something heheh) thanks for stopping by.

Palidoozy - yeah he is actually a scientist wanting the goo for studying, dangerous job

PxelSlayer - thanks for the suggestion man, yeah my work sometimes lacks a focal point and it's something that i'm trying to get right, really appreciate your comment man, cheers for visiting dude.

adammelo - cheers for the comment man, you can do it just practice and observe and you'll get there, and vid tutorials also help!

LMK
September 8th, 2009, 05:19 AM
hi guys

Raiderukkus - mate you probably have a good imagination we all do, but if you are feeling uninspired try going abstract first and just play around with shapes, sooner or later something will hit you, and you'll have a nice piece.

maria riaz - cheers Maria, that city scape was a good practice, as i had to also get perspective correct to a degree. i'm planning a new city scape will take time though, thank you for your visit.

NewGuy22 - hey there, cheers for the comment man, well i spend sometimes a few hours to half a day on these, some of them i did over a number of lunch breaks, I get only an hour for lunch, but sometimes it's a good thing as it keeps it fresh.

Vulgar` - thank you very much, I hope you drop by again.

will try and post some more works, lunch time has been preoccupied with reading Dorian Grey as i want to finish the book b4 i c the movie!

LMK
September 18th, 2009, 08:57 AM
DK_sketch - hi, cheers for having a look, I've made some custom brushes, I find them most useful with city stuff, like windows etc.

Lateman - thanks for the nice words, contrast is always a tweaky thing, as i sometimes go to far and have to tweak it back, but when it's right it really makes a difference.

Pixiebrush - thank you very much, glad you enjoyed them:)

GETBUCK - Don't worry about spelling, we're artists ;) thank you for your visit.

gonna get some work done on the weekend hopefully!

Callumbo
September 18th, 2009, 11:45 AM
Some nice pieces here LMK.
How much thumbnailing do you do to start with?
I agree with PxelSlayer about focal point. I reckon it would really give
your paintings such as the 'hive' piece (last image on your 1st post) a real punch.
I'm a bit of a sucker for epic atmospheric paintings...

Bendragon
September 18th, 2009, 06:31 PM
Nice! I think you could separate the foreground, midground and background some more. Think about those three levels and their different planes. Cool stuff!

Diabolique
September 21st, 2009, 05:50 PM
Wow i love your enviros! I just really started trying myself, i really love this stuff!

LMK
September 24th, 2009, 04:26 PM
hi all, hope your well:)

Callumbo - I do thumbnail a bit, usually they are just scribbles that get the idea across. I'm trying to put more of a focal point in my work and also trying to lead the viewer too;) I'm also a sucker for epic enviros, especially ones that the Guild wars team produce!

Bendragon - cheers man, gonna try and get more depth in my paintings as i go. I'll definately remember those three lvls dude;)

Diabolique - thankyou for the Kind words:)

well this one is a WIP trying to further understand light and shadows, i'll try and work on it more.

Nice work LMK :) I'm really looking forward to seeing how you improve. *subscribed* Do you use ps or painter? If at all you dont mind me asking.

LMK
October 15th, 2009, 06:21 PM
jatherip - Thank you for checking my sb out dude and thank you for the link, i'll study it for sure XD

Aperson4ever - cheers man, i'll try and do more hahaha

Alucid - hey there, thank you for the nice comment:) I use both painter and PS. I find it easier to rough out the basic shapes in painter and then refine detail in PS, though usually it is a constant back and forth process. thank you for visiting dude.

thought i'd post a few thumbs from my analogue SB, not much mostly scibbles i use to get ideas out.

November 15th, 2009, 12:14 AM
nice stuff, i think you could use some more dramatic lighting in a few of your exteriors. not necessarily like crazy sunset lighting but just a little bit to make it pop :D

Holland
November 15th, 2009, 11:27 AM
Great work! Perhaps try upping the contrast a little in places though and adding a few highlights. Keep it up! :)

good works, latest work looks very natural
and keep it up:)

Bendragon
November 15th, 2009, 02:07 PM
Looking good! Keep at it! Id like to see more shapes and elements involved in your interiors to break up the regular looking shapes. A wall doesn't have to be too flat, add some raised layers there and carve in slots too!

LMK
November 16th, 2009, 03:55 AM
wow these are thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate the feedback.

jatherip - Well I kind of wanted to push myself to do more interior environments, also to push rendering a bit more and try and communicate things better, still a ways to go, I'll try and post more for sure:)

Hp - thank you for visiting my SB, Lighting is one of the things i'm trying to get right as it really helps an image's mood and believability. I'll try and do more:)

Holland - cheers man, indeed i can push some of my stuff further with contrast to make things a bit more punchy, thanks for checking my SB out.

milu - Thank you for the kind words, will try and keep em coming;)

Bendragon - cool dude glad you liked it, was weird i was kinda funny, i had a basic thumbnail as a guide but also corrected and explored some stuff on the way. cheers dude.

Apologies no Pict update.... coming soon lol :)

That latest image is awesome! Storytelling-wise, the backstory comes up very vividly, makes me wonder who and why did that and for what. The first image you posted drew me in too; it has that impact to it. ^^

Thanks for dropping by my SB by the way- I'd totally pick enviros over characters- but for now it's all practice, practice, practice. Keep painting those enviros! (Actually curious as to what your Character SB would look like- if you did have one.)

Digging the internal scene you last posted.

I like the sense of scale your outdoor scenes show, very epic. It's a good start.

LMK
November 19th, 2009, 03:13 PM
Hi guys little update for ya

aiRaGe - thank you very much man, will try and do more updates XD

ilmenhin - hey there, glad you liked the image, i like environments as it's a chance to create a whole different world and you gotta think about everything. I guess i should do more characters, maybe i will in future :)

derbz - thx for swinging by, happy you digging them! ;)

ok so i know these are not environments, but a bit of variety is good, these two are master copies i did from the Zhang Lu's & Jason manley portraits, but i did them in black watercolour to train and get familiar with the medium, hope u like...more envo's soon hehehehehe

hp
November 20th, 2009, 01:24 AM
um wtf why have you not been busting out the watercolor before!??!?!?!?!

awesomeeee

LMK
November 20th, 2009, 05:51 AM

LMK

gonna tighten this one up, trying to get more narrative in my pieces :painting:

Inishmore
January 12th, 2010, 11:49 AM
Your work looks great. Absolutely wonderful :D

One thing though that sort of stuck out to me is that you seem to have very little contrast in your works. (I'm a terminology-rookie, so please forgive the lack of eloquency. On top, English isn't my first language, so bear with me :) I'm referring to a bigger contrast between lights and darks)

LMK
January 12th, 2010, 01:02 PM
Hey Inishmore, yeah i'm sometimes a bit hesitant to go really dark in areas, just gotta keep at it, thank you having a look.

JasonHickey
January 13th, 2010, 04:21 AM
The mood is great. I think you could try and push the values a bit in this one. what do you think? Also where is the light source going to be coming from?

Look forward to the finished result. :)

January 14th, 2010, 05:39 AM
that's a pretty epic composition! I actually wonder what the character is doing, that seems to be unclear. are they just walking or just standing there? Where are they walking to or from?

looking forward to more of your studies!

dana brancucci
January 15th, 2010, 11:50 AM
Hey, thanks for the comment in my SB. Lovin' the enviros and the variety you are putting into them. Keep doing them, they are only getting better- the one on the second page with the security guard dead at his desk is awesome! My one criticism would be, and this applies mainly to the environments on the first page, that in a lot of the images you are using a pretty indirect lighting. So you have multiple paintings that are mainly in the middle value range. Which is fine if you are doing it intentionally, but it would be cool to see you push some them into stronger light/dark seperation as well. Keep it up!

LMK
January 15th, 2010, 06:31 PM
angelo cordon - hey there, well story is not to fleshed out for the piece, but it is supposed to be that the mech has stopped and that the soldier is doing some type of diognostics on it, yeah it totally needs to be clearer though, i've done an update to flesh out some detail.

dana brancucci - hi ya, i'm glad you like my environments, and thankyou for you advice man, i think i will try some more dramatic lighting and one point source light, will definately add to the mood and atmosphere of a picture;)

update on my mech image, till later

Dude, great enviro's. I'd like to see some pushed a little further to completion like where that mech piece is going, which is really dope by the way. Post up some more watercolor portraits, those were tasty. On the rake brush piece, be careful of the face structure before you start blocking in features. Keep it up, cheers.

LMK, love the enviros. Your master studies were top notch as well. I'd love to see more of your enviros really pushed (details, more contrast). Your concepts are brilliant and great starting points, but I am left really wanting to see where they end up as finished pieces.

Awesome progress.

JustinBeckett
April 12th, 2010, 02:23 PM
Hey dude, looks like your back at it...I am unsure what you have done in the time you haven't been posting, but I think maybe you should do more studies towards environments, stuff to start with would be: perspective(all kinds), color theory/moods etc, composition(this is huge) and drawing from life...etc...

Keep it up!

LMK
April 12th, 2010, 05:27 PM
Syle - hey there, I totally agree, i need to do some proper finished pieces, I'll try and do some though my job keeps my pretty busy, thanks for the feedback man:)

good work with these quick movie stills. Loving the 'moon' one with gerty...except you didn't include kevin spacey's smiley face...damn you. What film is the 4th painting below it? (the interior shot of the front door)

Great environments so far LMK. I like where you going towards with it, the piece with the monster coming out the mountain is nicely done, the clouds and such look good so far :) It's funny a year ago i really disliked environment design now it's like a focus of mine. Character design and environment, trying to get my environments stronger. Keep it up!
