Tips, Crits, and Books largely appreciated.
Concepts is easy for me to come up with but foundations is new to me.
So this will be an alot of artstudy and now and then concepts when i let them slip.

I'm self taught. Never been to college. Going to Watts Atelier for foundation/figure work next year.

Learning Maya at the moment as well.

Everything I draw is on Paintchat. Forces me to learn colors and not what 5 million layers can do to make my stuff look better.

Trying to wrap up a freelance gig with 60+ CG work and a heck of a lot of graphic design ( I'm working on my own boardgame for Catalyst Games) so Im going to be wrapped up in that fior the next 4 weeks. Plus I landed a sweet comic deal which is paying me pretty handsomely to be an pencil/inker/conceptartist/storyboard artist. I'll post my storyboards once I revise them!

Heres some doodles I did inbetween my time. Usually take me 5-10 minutes its just to get the concept down.

2.5 hour color study pratice. Hurfff derruugg 2.5 hour color study BACK TO WORK. With color studies I'm painting in about 80% opacity. guessing the color that the original picture im studying from is. NO eyedropping unless I fail after 10 guesses of the color. I'm trying to learn to know color when I see it, not cheat.

It helped alot when my mom made note their from the same hue family but, kind of too late since I was at 2 hours into it already.

Fufufu okay! Been working on a comic with my buddy and I'm doing the color job I been doing up character refs and optional color designs for him.

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/3356/bvgfy.jpg
It was hard to get him to contrast Djieien's long legs. But Djieien's legs are bent, but Jonesy's as you can see are long and stilt-like.
Stuck to more primary colors for him since he's the main character.

We'll probably go with the one button look with the tie sticking out all funky. Like he barely knows how to put human clothes on. Though we'll probably go with the more muted brownish hues version.

Goes with the colouring style more were inventing up for the comic. Not my usual cup of tea so I hope to surprise people just as much as Nubba will with the style he choose and his clean lines.
http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/001/8/c/Djieien_by_Ikager.jpg
Djieien is a native American myth.

He will be our talented gun man in the comic. Can't give too much away since SPOILERS.

Also trying to sneak in subtle little Native American motifs into his design and patterning was very fun. I figured with a lot of cultures their dress is based on what they believe their gods to look like. So they try to emulate them the best they can in every way possible. Like small children looking up to the big kids.

But Donestre aka Donny and the Cadejo Bros. are next

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2009/363/3/2/Boss_by_Ikager.jpg
More Pyramid Scheme comic work.

Omg ahh I had the hardest time with this because there are scant references for barrel chested men ( I didn't know it was a deformity what)

Anyways here is Boss he is a Gremlin. Representing the hard middle class working man. Where hardwork and perseverance will get you ahead. Adverse where his son is just sheerly weird talents.

Boss was one of the best, because of it everyone has called him Boss for so long he forgot his real name. He also scored the prettiest gremlin trophy wife he could get to fetch him a beer and a sandwich and was living the high life. And oh happy day-a Son! The ploys of running a father son business bubbled in his head gleefully as he sucked on a stogy and bragged to the Gremlin neighborhood.

But when he discovered there was something very wrong with his son when he got older. He was autistic, and could only put things TOGETHER instead of pulling them apart. Such out of this world crazy and practically useless in the eyes of any Gremlin. Not only that his wife left him and he was laughed out of the Gremlin community. Shamed, he went to an abandoned hanger with his son in hopes to get it through his head the proper way a Gremlin should be. And reclaim his glory when he finally gets it through his sons head that Gremlins take things APART and begin their business.

So he could rub it in everyone's face that laughed at him before.

And thats his backstory/setup

Design for a Comic character.

Trying stylish design. Still deciding between background stories either its going to be the blackbirds baked in a pie or the birds left over from the Salem trials because witch's were burned and drowned but what happened to their feathered insidous pets?

And a quickie concept i pounded out inbetween work as a break. Trying to do an original spin on Cerberus with three helldogs mashed together as punishment for something they did bad. the one in the middle has to support them both because it was the one that instigated the other two to join in. And there just stuck tagging along. They are all jerkfaces.

Thanks so much! And the Watts guys are pretty kicking, there's alot of them over at The Illustration Board.

But thanks! I'm going to a Life Drawing Workshop they have on Fridays. Going to attend every Friday until I leave, it's going to be my first life draw anything so I am really excited.

Leviathus: Thanks so much! I will do my best not to fail, and if I do you can find me on the streets anytime and put shame upon me on whatever form you wish. And trust me, I will know what I deserved.

Metal Fingers: Hahah thanks it's a oldie but everyone seems to love it. I haven't taken any classes yet, I'm just copying stuff from books and trying to learn my best from their until I go to my first school of learning this summer.

Character design for an animation between me and my wife, we decided for the more stoutly one with the actual sword and shield, you'll see her drawn a few times, but her shape seems fun for animootion.

So I abused someones " RENT FREE VIDEOS FROM OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY" dealie with his school while I was visiting him, but I remembered too late though I was able to watch all of these Bob Kato DVD's http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/category/15/Bob-Kato Which got me thinking on how I'm laying my marks more and ect.

Some concept doodles for a warmup today.

I figured the females would be a more blueish variety. And I tried mixing the gremlins to the old Disney Variety to the Gremlin movies one. Also have them retain that " Up to no good" mischievousness too them but still keep that likable Disney charm. Then throw in that the more rarer or harder to get/more infamous cogs are something the females would be wooed by. Just an aspect on making a more believable Gremlin race.

Second Onisan! Your sketchbook has personality and movement that can be a rarity but also the attention to technical detail that a lot of people strive for on this website. Awesome!

Hey, I had a ball looking through this sketchbook, Your studies are solid and well rendered which is refreshing to see, and you pay great attention to proportions and details, and that helps make your characters feel a lot more real. Nice style you have going for yourself as well, though i find myself wanting to see your characters pushed a little bit more, the concepts are great but a little fine tuning and experimenting can make them even greater. Also your people seem a bit static, zap 'em with a bit more dynamic energy!

Anyhoo, like i said, awesome stuff in here, good to see you updating regularly, and i can't wait for more! Keep up the hard work, you've got me inspired.

The Jasolo- Hahah good! Sketching is my life, I'm such a doodlebug it's terrible. But in the end mileage helps alot

Onisan-Thanks so much! I feel bad for always posting my anatomy studies so I'm going to post some more of my characters

B-Ren thanks! ♥

Lemming clone- Thanks alot! I used to animate alot so I try and keep that one thing in there, and I have fun putting motion in my work.

Austen FM- Thanks a good thing to strive for! Alot of my anatomy work seems clincal because I'm worrying about something or another, but my character sketches are seemingly more fluid let me post some up.

Went through your book, and I must say this must be one of my favorite ones yet here. It shows great versatility and skill, but also gives a great example of a smart way to learn. I especially appreciate your notes, since they really help the reader learn something too amongst enjoying the sketches. Five stars :)

first thank you for stopping by my sb.

I am fascinated by your process. Particularly the notes you make on forms. For example in one post you wrote on a note book page a series of notes on facial movement..smiles demonstrating the muscles. then later in one of your renderings I could see the subtle but characteristic smile, smirk and movement in your renderings faces.

I am still looking through the sb. But I had to comment on your notes, the way your characters progress oh and your perspective renderings...wow.

Learning how to hold the pencil will be a arduous task but Chase is teaching me, I'll try to practice making strokes on the weekends.

Lucas 20 minute figure lay-in class.

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6525/124pn.jpg
Lucas corrected the torso and a lot of my random contours.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/3412/122wj.jpg

I believe he corrected this one too.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/2337/120co.jpg
Lucas did the back, arm, leg. Seems I tend to skinny up my arms and legs too much and again way too many contours and giving my work the Michelin man effect.

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/5945/114wi.jpg

Just focusing on Reilly for awhile, still struggling with making adept strokes.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/9539/116jia.jpg

Chases cameraaaaaaaa.

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5214/118lb.jpg

Erik's trace paper over. I learned a lot about being adamant about measurements and symmetry and patience is the key.

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/2012/112jk.jpg

Still holding the pencil wrong.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/9464/110ni.jpg

Got too busy with the hair. I did lay it out with a basic shape but her curls looked really fun, but all the line noise in the bottom left looks odd in comparison to the Reilly face.

http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/9695/127qzy.jpg

Trying to take Lucas's advice about less contouring.

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/4099/forestrelicredo.jpg
Some great advice.
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/9126/designingcharacterswith.gif

LOVE your original ideas. If I may ask, what sort of process do you use when creating something from imagination. Do you purely draw from the minds eye or do you gather reference images for some inspiration etc.

Icecold- Thanks! i am really loving the Atelier and what it is doing for me. Watts is just a really great place to go.

PHATandy- Thanks! Just bought Micheal Hampton's Figure Drawing- Invention and Design and I hope to boost my figure invention even more with it.

Blue Habit- Counts how much of the ideal I have down in my head. If it's something simple I have to work through then reference all the way until an ideal forms. But if I have a majority of the information, I'll throw the ideal down and use reference to help enchance and make the ideal stronger.

NickTRIP- I have no ideal. Normally digitally I don't have that problem but with figure drawing it is really evident. I'm probably measuring out really wrong and should use more shapes and plumb lines to help.

Skullkid- Hahah thanks so much!

Anatomy doodles from today. Swore everyday I'm going to take 1-2 hours doing anatomy studies no matter what.

And I'm not even done with my 2nd term year haha, I'll probably update this when I am.

For those who are concerned about improving and moving ahead with their drawing skills I would highly suggest this school- http://www.wattsatelier.com/org/WattsAtelier/cms.aspx

I was at first scared because I had no formal training but this place put that at ease. It's a pleasurable experience with great models, very informative and caring teachers and an all around great community. It's hard not to make friends here and great contacts. The progress is cool to see. Do you think that doing the construction so strictly has made you able to visualise it more and in turn are able to draw without it more accurately?

Oh my god, I am loving your sketchbook. The studies are so well done and have clearly served you well. I love your sense of design and style. Your recent Watts work is really fantastic, too. I'd love to attend someday and it seems so reasonably priced as compared to some others that I've seen.

I've inferred that you do a lot of your digital work in paintchat, and that seems like a really nice, simple way to learn the basics of digital painting. Any suggestions on where to go to find a good paintchat application?

Thank you for your kind words! I used to know where to get the program at but I'm starting my own Pchat forum from scratch with a programmer re-hauling some aspects of the program. So artists can mingle and improve together, sometime I'll be launching it later this year.

And Watts is an incredible place, I have never thought being taught to draw would be such a pleasurable experience. I just posted up the Spring schedule over here if anyone is curious. (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3045699#post3045699)

I am not interested in any other school. I feel this place will teach me everything I need to know.

The teaching process is so great you are guaranteed results for the first term. They usually let you warm up for about 20 minutes. Then sit down and do a demo and go over the process of gesture, Reilly rhythms, shadow mapping and toning. Then the rest of the duration of the class you can respectfully ask for the teacher to work on your piece or do a trace over. You learn so so so much from this teaching method.

Best of all, the students and teachers are all really great people and are charming and helpful. The classes are limited to 15 people each so the teachers can pay special attention to everyone. So it makes it easy to get to know people and make good connections. And it always has this nice cozy and inviting feel, and at the same time very inspiring with everyone working towards the same goal of getting better at their craft.

Sketch for dominance war and expect more of these.

This guy got sealed up underground and with all the noise from above he has finally awoken again. And with the battlefields are splayed out like a all you can eat buffet now he is just going to town. His tendril spikes break off and regenerate so he doesn't end up singeing himself in his acidic cauldron of a tummy.

Week 1 of my first environment class, get used to seeing these I'll be taking classes over the course of the year. Next will be Paick's Environ 2 class for set design then after that Futurepoly's environ classes when they open up. Also we were discouraged about relying on texture tools and were supposed to be painting these rather them smothering them with a bunch of texture noise. So I did two things I don't really paint often, water and rocks.

My crit for this week was just put more foreground elements in the top two and I just need to push my values just a bit more. This week I got to do 3 city scapes, no 1 point perspective and using his curve?? lighting technique. Still got to watch this weeks lecture.

Totally impressive works!! Your anatomy studies look very interesting, especially the Hampton and Bammes inspired stuff. I also really like the upper greyscale sketch in post 211. Looking forward to see an update!

I like all the little personal touches you put in... like the skull at the head of the femur... and the Marios :)

You're rockin and rollin.

Your sketchbook has become a mini art education course for me. Seriously, thank you for putting all these little tidbits and tutorials. You are really motivating me to work even harder! So...thank you again :)

A quick doodle, her butt and leg are weird and it's a bit sloppy but I feel odd responding with out ~*~pictures~*~

Thanks p_sage! I figure as long as I'm essentially learning from them I can destroy them however I wish.

tehmeh- Excuse me for a sec while I turn away and blush from the intial shock of you commenting on my SB.

Okay I looked at some gifs of sharks eating planes.

I maned up a little. And nah I did them in pchat, I'm trying to get into the habit of doing stuff more traditional, problem is when I do stuff traditional I get kind of lazy about scanning it in. I'm gonna be grinding up some charcoal into power soon and get amp'd to doing these three gnomon videos I borrowed from a friend-

How to Render Matte Surfaces: Shading Planar Surface
How to Render Matte Surfaces: Shading Round Geometric Surfaces
How to Render Matte Surface: Shading Complex Curved Surfaces

Watching them first right now and getting myself geared in a weeks time to get to grinding when my freelance is lightening up. I hope to getting busy with my studying so much more when my schedule is wide open besides my 9 hr day job.

Fernteixeira- I love your name first off. And haha thanks! I hope to be scanning some in tonight and spamming this more.

Cassandre Palentine- Another awesome name. Thanks! I hope to be doing more, right now I'm going to do some Algenpfleger style flesh tubes (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=114449&page=8) for awhile and step up to portraits.

Anonanon- Oh wow thanks! I write everything down from books/lectures to help me remind myself better. Just key notes I fancy at the moment I'm sure there is a lot more to be had by reading the material itself. But I post a lot of tutorials and tibbits I find on my tumblr to help people. The famous artist course is definitely a must download for anyone- http://amberblade.tumblr.com/

But my usual partner is busy atm so I haven't been able to do a lot lately. I hope to grab unto him and clutch him tightly next time he's around.

Also doing a 100 male torso challenge since watching Ctrl+Paint how if you have trouble with something draw it 100 times. So I will! Gonna try for a male torso a day!

Here's a few more Pchat collabs since I found a folder with a bunch-
