Fish tries to improve drawing

quick background: I'm 19 yrs old, no tuition in art but keen to improve, just damn lazy and ignorant about it. I know i shouldn't be lazy, but i am, so this sketchbook is an attempt to fight my laziness somewhat and get some of the basics down (since i started out, like so many, drawing anime, and still do, i guess, i really don't have much of an idea of the basics - actually, i don't even know what counts as basics). I think it would be awesome to have an art career some day, but i know i don't have the experience or knowledge neccessary to do that yet, and i don't even know what aspect of the industry appeals to me most yet.

so to start off with, some photostudies out of magazines, just drawn iwth ballpen. a non-ref charcoal sketch to show what i don't know about drawing faces. a quick digital study from national geographic. By the way, the flowers are drawn around the most screwed up drawings. It's to keep me from scribbling out every single mistake i make.

I'm not quuuite sure about the etiquette of this site yet. Have I done anything wrong, like too big image files or something?

it seems it takes people time to begin to take notice of these SBs. doesn't matter. i guess i should post more in other people's threads instead of lurking.

Paudang woman in oil pastels referenced from National Geographic. It's unfinished. I wasn't bothered here about getting a perfect likeness to the woman but with seeing exactly what you can actually do with oil pastels in terms of colour and detail. They're not as impossible as i thought, quite malleable, once you make a mistake, and it's nice to work iwth physical texture instead of pixels, but.... i don't quite like them.

Brush tests using zhuzhu's photoshop brushes. I'm not getting enough out of them - my fault, just trying to use them like my normal brushes, when they're not all like that. The second one is ridiculous, but i'll show it anyway.

Great start to your SB, your studies are good, I really like the Paudang woman in oil pastels, looks like you have a solid foundation on which to build apon, keep up the good work :)

I need to give this sketchbook some more love. It's not that I haven't been drawing. I just haven't considered anything worth showing. Lately, I've been trying to get colours and anatomy right. So here's two colour studies. One from a reference (lockstock on deviantart) and one using my own preconstructed colour pallet to test out skin tones (never used a preconstructed pallet before, shoudl have tried it earlier, much more useful). I really want to be able to get really tactile looking skintones like some artists can, got a way to go yet though.

I drew an apple! And then because I found the apple was not quite in proportion with the reference (from a photo, because the lighting on my desk is terrible) I got stuck on whether to restart because apple proportions aren't really that vital compared to like, apple texture, or whether to fix it because I'm always so lazy about copying exactly from references when doing photostudies. And so I stopped drawing the apple for now (will continue later, when I decide whether to restart or not) and did some lacklustre speed enviros but i still feel determined and incensed so i'll find something else fun to draw now. I think you have problems drawing face from different angles, try to work it out ^^
