The Appreciation of the Feminine Form Thread [nsfw]

Hullo Everyone!.

I've noticed a trend lately in the lounge that unfortunately has not been a positive one. As you might have noticed, there have been several threads relating to the objectification and sexualization of women. Now I consider myself a feminist, though not a militant one, and I've been trying to think of positive ways of combatting this trend rather than simply constantly raging against it, and this is my thought.

Last week in the Girl's forum I posted two thread: One called "The Appreciation of the Masculine Form" thread and the other "The Appreciation of the Feminine Form" thread, both of which you can see I've have now moved here. This is where we post many pictures of beautiful people, with many many different conceptions of beauty. These threads were objectifying either sex, but rather to deal with sexuality and beauty in a way that doesn't belittle either party.

Basically, the idea is to let everyone let off a little steam and post pictures of people they attractive, or even just interesting! (For those that don't have a specific gender, or have changed genders, please post them in whichever thread they usually identify more with.) Let's show that we can deal with beauty, aestetics, sexuality and gender in a relaxed, comfortable and non-offensive manner, and see some really awesome pictures (and get some really awesome reference) to boot.

Feel free to tell me if I'm bonkers, but I really think that we can turn the current tide around into a positive, gender-inclusive and comfortable atmosphere for everybody. :]

Thank you so much for this, Daestwen! I also consider myself a feminist, and having a desire to work in the video game industry, I often find myself surrounded by a all-encompassing and pervasive blanket of misogyny that can become very tiring to deal with on a daily basis. I always feel like I'm ruining everyone's fun whenever I have to explain to them that rape jokes aren't really that funny and harassing the booth babes at Comicon is really not OK.

I think a lot of the problems I see with video game/ fantasy art / geek culture simply stem from ignorance. I don't think the guys are often even aware that they're making a hostile environment for us gals (or gay men or women, or transexuals) but often they are, and I think part of the solution lies in empathy end education. If guys really made an effort to understand what it feels like to walk into the workplace as the only female artist on the team, and then sit with men making rape jokes all day after someone close to them had been raped, then perhaps they'd be more sympathetic on the anonymous internet.

I had found more females by doing a bit of research on African Tribes. The Shai and Krobo women of Africa are considered the most beautiful by their colleagues. There is the female coming of age ceremony known as Dipo. If you go into Flickr you get some great results.

I find the "Porn-Star Portraits" fascinating. It is interesting to compare the facial expressions between the clothed and the unclothed versions. Even though the subjects, in most cases, attempted to hold the same pose from clothed to unclothed versions, there are subtle differences in facial expression between the poses. The degree and nature of clothing affects the state of mind.

Self-evident you say? Take nothing for granted.

Isn't that just an innate difference we have? I don't mean to oversimplify things, but "character" can be faked or altered just as easily as surface appearance (through acting), is there really anything deeper to an average woman's view of a man? Either way, you can't convince another person of what is attractive. Asking a guy to look deeper is ignoring the fact that we are primarily attracted to surface beauty.

What I read from those pictures is that either the model and/or Photographer/Commissioner are egotistical.... Those arent the type of photography that tell a story (if they were I figure the people would be in their natural habitat... their home doing what they usually do... rather than posing), so no I dont get a sense of character out of them. Those are obviously Beauty shots, and the message is clear: "look at me, I'm still beautiful and I'm going to shove my "beauty" in your face."

I think its an insecurity that too many women suffer from and men (in general) don't have that problem. Either women want to get plastic surgery to look like the "perfect" female form or they want to challenge it. whilst men in general dont take it as seriously.

I’m going to put out a challenge here because my Google-Fu sometimes escapes me. Find traditional Japanese beauties without the lid operation, Indian ones without a nose job, and African women not coming from the northern half. All of them should not be a western ideal. I hoped this thread would be a celebration of different types of women, but unlike the men’s the choice, it is so narrow here, with a few exceptions. Now there are women from all of the above who would quite easily fit into the western norms of beauty, but try harder.

I’m not bitter; just don’t understand why some guys have to limit their choice so dramatically, when there’s a world of different beauty out there waiting for you to rediscover them. Beauty was based on good health and that means regular features, it doesn’t mean the features have to be a certain shape or size.

I agree with this, my argument was that guys aren't attracted to "character" as much as women seem to be, and that it's not shallow to be attracted to mostly physical traits... which I think you implied initially. But yeah, I hate fake boobs, nose jobs and "standardised" beauty....

I think more variety would help the thread, but at the same time it seems a little inane to whine about any else's choices when you can easily submit your own.

Human beings are social creatures, what we describe things as when they are familiar is mostly predefined by the societies we live in. the popular ideas of beauty are generalized, real beauty is found when you encounter something that maybe doesn't line up with those ideas, but you have no predefined understanding of and it blows your top of.

I love this picture. The expression on the girl to the left's face just crosses all language barriers. I love things like that. Things that cross seemingly impenetrable cultural differences, and remind us that despite variations of society, language, custom, or dress inside we are all the same. It's really amazing how powerful laughter is. That's something that's always struck me whenever there are shows or programs that go to visit many of the indigenous tribes in Africa. That was the only part that was a joke. It was a play on the "western ideal" thing. Seems whenever something is opposed or considered a little strong it is compared to the nazi regime. Be it civil rights, business ethics, or most recently healthcare. Which I think is funny/ absurd. Seeing as "Now I consider myself a feminist, though not a militant one.." you are no doubt familiar with this silly term. And seeing as the ladies on the forum have a little corner called something like "Chicks that draw" and the term "chick" often being a hated on term, it seemed to me that there was a general sense of humor about the whole thing. Not unlike photoshop, I like to work in layers. So my post, while written with a little venom, was intended to reach multiple audiences and work on a few levels. I’m more into creature design and not too long ago I started to build up and organize my reference folder for character design, so looking throughout this thread has been very inspiring, so thank you daestwen for starting it and thank you all for the posts. I’ve added so many of them to my reference folder. Thank you very much for sharing.
For me the most wonderful thing is the mix of nationalities, cultures, and genetic information. I remember meeting a girl with German and Filipino parents and she was gorgeous. Catrinel Menghia and Irina Shaykhlislamova, for example, have that kind of blended beauty that I find incredibly attractive. I also think that some gravure models (I’ll post more of them later on) have an explosive mix of cute, adorable, sexy and mysterious look. Last but not least important, I’m very into kissing, so I’m conscious that juicy lips are a trend within this selection. I’m sorry for being so obvious :D

Ralph Lauren has been catching a lot of heat for a recent ad. I think the picture is awful. A major player in the clothing world has a social responsibility to the young impressionable girls seeing these ads. Not only that but whatever art team made this and cleared it for use should have their tablets taken away. Just plain bad photoshopping.

Gotta disagree with that. Parents have a social responsibility to make sure their kids aren't dumb enough to be affected by this crap. I hate edited photos but free expression allows for that. If some people are adversely affected by imagery, they're pretty much screwed either way. There's too many people blaming their flaws on external sources.

I concur. Very interesting face. I really like the way the skin hangs around her upper eyelids. heh. Is that a weird thing to say? Sort of poofyness above the eyes. It seems like somewhat of a rare trait. Particularly for blondes? Usually I'd expect more eyelid to show I guess. When I see a blonde with eyes like that I go gaga. Its like an asian babe and a blonde babe in one. heh. One came into where I work about a year ago. Wish she'd shop there more...

sort of a morbid picture, but what of this thread isn't, anyhow. (especially the awfully airbrushed ones) I get a lot out of viewing the female form, but none so much as this series published on rotten.com years ago. An overwhelming awe and silence overtakes me, my mind thinks of all of the tiny life forms thriving in place of human cells. A universe destroyed yet still teeming with life. I get jumpy and nervous, evolutionary reaction, every fiber except for my nose trying to tell my stubborn mind "Aaah! A dead body! Run before whatever did it in gets you, too!" I get visions of myself someday, not just old and decrepit, but dead and rotting. The dead flesh used as a canvas of grotesque beauty by nature herself. Then I get a little bit sick to my stomache, as a final warning to me from nature that, no matter how hungry I am, this is not something good to eat.
