Beautiful studies. I like the thick paint (as it should be) on the Burdick copy. I wouldn't mind seeing some traditional media as well. Keep up the good work.

got painter 11 today, heres my first digital charcoal with the new hard media, lovely they are. also got artrage 3, nifty oils all luscious like yummy, self portrait in that one.................

and finally for those of you who struggle with color and value ive made a basic diagram showing how "direct light" affects colors and there resulting shadows.
the top swatches are in the light and are the starting colors. once you have your color in the light all you need to do to get the correct value (for the moment we are speaking strictly value) is move the color picker to halfway between the current value and black, this will give you soild results every time for scence s in dirct light(sunlight, strong artificail lights with a secondary diffused light, ect) as you can see when these swathes are placed next to one another the top ones are clearly in the light and the bottom clearly in sshadow, there is no confusion even though the shadow of the yellow color is almost as bright as the blue in the light.

Nice stuff here. I'd love to see more tighter paintings and some work from imagination.

like the studies a lot, really nice painterly style, as long as you learn something from all of them there's no point finishing them (unless of course that is what you are going for). A bit more work from imagination would be good.

only two things for ya paint what you see not what you think you see, and on the top picture give the green guy a left hand. :)

tiny update, been working alot with real paint these days, i actually think im getting used to it finally. also justy bought myself some old holland oil paint, it was incredibly expensive but it should make a real difference... looking forward to trying them out. btw all these paintings are done with shitty student grade paint, the yellows in particular annoy me because they have absolutely no covering power!

im sick of trying to use the artist oils in painter they are so awkward, because of the inabilty to control how much paaint comes off the brush during a stroke, from now on ive decided to use the chunky oil pastel then i can follow up with the artists oils for effects after the painting is complete.

a quick poop!

Yeah, the artist oil is hard to use from scratch, it's easier to lay down some colors first. Great updates btw. I really dig the looseness in your stuffs. Keep it up! :)

no idea why no one replied yet, your blog has good info for idiot like me. your paintings are good, the one where you show your portret proces in 3 steps is very usefull and the one where you start with soft brushes then oils and then refine, very interesting. Thank you :)

Good work here, I think you should practice more in drawings and in traditional portraits. The portraits look a little bit faded, this is maybe from the dry paint. If you use more saturated colors I think it will be better.

i use a limited palette for better harmony so i cant reach high level of saturation. maybe i should add more colors.

To me, this is a perfect example of a 5 stars sketchbook. I love what you are doing with the strokes and the sensibility you are showing with the expressions. Did you stop posting or having a long holiday? Id love to see more:)

just a small update here, a few quick oils, the portrait took a day and a half and i learned so much doing it. my first real attempt at a diffused light portrait in oils. something that really surprised me was the amount of black i used, every inch of the painting has black in it. I have learned to be much more sensitive with my darks.

besides the stufff posted ive been doing alot of composition work, small quick thumbs in painter, nothing worth posting but im learning

So I'm assuming that this is a feature of Painter - but when you paint and you seem to have drop shadows from the paint on the canvas, what's the trick to do that?

(Since I'm working in Photoshop and traditional oils, I'm wondering if I can give that element to my digital work).

Excellent stuff, I love seeing your posts

yes its a feature of both painter and artrage... it looks nice but is difficult to control. you should check out the 30 day trial of painter if you never tried it, an awesome program but very complicated to use properly, artrage is also good and simple to use, you would get good results mixing it with ps.
thanks for stopping by
