Did a new self portrait...
Not too happy with the background...I don't know I didn't want to make it too complicated but at the same time this one just doesn't seem right....maybe I'm being too nitpicky..
Also I'd like to know your opinion on my style..is it too cartoony (sp) for your guys tastes?
ideas or crits are welcome..:p

Who cares about other peoples taste? Is it too cartoony for YOUR taste?
I like it, it looks great.
The background IS cheese... only because you're using a stock texture though. ;)

BORING BACKGROUND ALERT!!
that, and I think that somehow the shadows on the background makes the character look flat, but I'm not sure.
IMO, your style is not too cartoony, but I liked your other, more stylized drawings better.
But please, the person (you) look so much better than the background, I really think you should give the drawing some justifiable background.
You need a little bit of shade under the nose.
Hope I wasn't too hard on you, should that be the case, it was not intentional, so just ignore me.
btw, you look like a nice guy :)

Seraph My Man!...too hard?..pbbbft!...That was nothing...besides if it wasn't for guys like you I'd be having crappy backgrounds on all my pics for years to come:p...I really appreciate you taking your time to post, and share tips like a "little shading here", or like you said...now that I look at it again....the background DOES make the image look flat...I'll try to rework it a bit and update in a little while...
Thanks again bud!:D

I think the background is good. You don't want the background to steal all the attention from the main figure.

Yea....like I'm running into the same problem with this one...I just can't seem to find a background that will fit...

If she's only half as cute as you drew her, you're a lucky guy.

hummmm, i like the drawing of your girlfriend the best of the two (maybe its cause the BG of the other is distracting me-LOL j/k). Yeah BG's on the first looks to amature, look at the other peoples work on this site- visit Thunderdome's thread and see the work there. Some of thoes artist have great styles that may inspire you on how to tackle BG's. I like your cartoony style, but i think the way you color them hold the characters back from being really good, heres an image from one of my fav Japanese artist Falcoon for an example of simple effective coloring:

i hope this helps! GL:chug:
