Lol GW is so broken they can't even make a proper teaser..
Although I enjoyed the rock spikes shooting out of the water, it all reminds me of a pop up book.
Fail!

Seein' as how a great deal of the ArenaNet art team posts on CA, nodaedalus, you might consider using a bit more tact when expressing your opinion. "LOLfail" isn't a very respectful or constructive way to offer an opinion or criticism.

What the hell are you even talking about? It looked fine to me. I never played GW but this trailer makes me want to explore these new locations, so it must be doing it's job.
And if you think it's so much fail, why don't you do better? We'll be waiting... though of course, we won't be holding our breath. ;)

I thought it was good use of After FX animation.
+ it's a good way to reward the artist who made the concept art.
You can't blame them for trying to be different than all the other CG gametrailers.

Woah, Put away your epeen kid.
I was only commenting because the video wasn't even a video..it was more along the lines of a flashy powerpoint presentation.
And I'm glad you want to "explore these new locations" Go do it.

I've got a new location for you to explore. :D
I'm just saying, why don't you post some art instead of ripping apart guys that spent years to get to the point where they get paid to make those (frankly awesome) paintings. And because they didn't do a fully rendered CG teaser like Blizzard does, you call it an epic fail? They chose to do something different. I don't see the problem.

I actually love the style of it. I think some people see it's limitations and go "AH that's why they did that" but I think the floating plane compositor animation totally has a place in game cinematics. ESPECIALLY when it uses totally badass paintings. In fact I hate seeing an awesome concept totally butchered into an in-game 3D model for the sake of a game engine cinematic. The whole "oh it takes them out of the experience" reason for not using prerendered or stylized cinematics is bullshit IMO. It takes me just as much out of the experience when some character I'm supposed to think is lovely, or am supposed to be emoting with or something has some stupid flickering game shadow across it's not enough poly wooden puppet face. A perfect example of that is Viking:Battle for Asgard. Hurricane painting some fucking awesome concepts for that game, and I especially liked Freya, she was beautiful and seemed kind of dangerous. For the most part the game actually uses a similar "animated graphic novel" approach for it's cinematics, but every so often Freya shows up in the game itself and looks BALLS. I don't think I'm hurting anyone's feelings by saying that because anyone that worked on that game had to know that the concept did not transfer well into 3D. She has this big woolly, downy collar thing, that has some of the worst looking alpha edges I've seen in a while and has none of the appeal of the costume piece the concept has. Then there's the never quite perfect, can't decided where I want to be game engine shadow that usually looks like it's trying to net her face with a halftone pattern or something. Once again, I love Hurricane's concepts, and the game is quite a bit of fun, and in some places looks quite beautiful...but this particular instance was related to the discussion...game cinematics. I'd rather take a partially animated "pop up book" of badass paintings then see something game engines aren't really ready to do. Besides, they showed actual in game environments in that trailer and I thought they were stunningly beautiful. Either way, I'm not a guild wars player, I'm an "awesome art" appreciator, and that trailer got me inspired.
Kekai, your art rocks my face off and makes me put my nose down and really try harder to be a better artist.

I am not criticizing their art, just the fact that NCSOFT decided to create a flash video rather than a full on video.
That's all.

See Cthogua's post above. CG is not automagically better than all other forms of animation. I would say they pulled this off quite well. And don't assume that they chose the style of animation due to laziness.

I like Blizzard, but as a correction, they do not always release CG with their "teaser" trailers. The ones for every WoW expansion except for Burning Crusade (which was the most badass trailer ever BTW) has been using in-game footage. Look up the ones on Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm. They release fully rendered videoes near or with the release of the expansion.
I don't know about you guys but animated concept art > in-game engine trailers IMO.
EDIT: I keep thinking Blizzard = WoW :o Corrected.

I never made any assumptions about laziness.
Pissing match aside, 'for what it is, it's quite the video. I'm not a 'bigger is better' person, or all about flashy effects, I just feel like a real-time CG would have been more effective.
Look at early Final Fantasy games, games made back in the early 90's. When computing wasn't nearly as strong and artists were stuck with a very limited amount of colors, the dynamics of the fight scenes and the action that took place in cut scenes and intro vids are what captivated the audience.
Again I must stress that I wasn't targeting the art so much as the form of execution.
A fully-rendered CG just would have hit home, IMO

trailer is awesome, unique and very different than straight CG and in game trailers we've been seeing for years now. I like the raw after effects and concept art feel. Great job Arena Net!!

I love this emerging trend of using 2d in this way for cutscenes and such. Anno 1404 also did it beautifully.
Man, NCsoft's art team gotta be the envy of quite a few studios!
