Good stuff
I like the second self portrait and if you rendered that car yourself then thats also very good.
The last guy looks good as well i like the way youve "suggested" the elbow the dark smudge underneath it. I need to do stuff like that.

georgem~ thanks for the feedback. Yes, the car was all me, its actually not as hard as it looks. As for the smudging, i just recently got back into pencil when i saw Tonci (lungbug) 's bad ass stuff.

your progression is improving daily.
stop framing your elements in the center of the composition ya dirty bastard.
work on gesture and indication on your figure stuff. don't be so literal with the lines. vary your line weight, don't outline.
you're still hot and cold so keep drawing and consistency will follow.
lots of love!
ho ho ho.

hello. couple new things tonight:
http://www.gino.hostrocket.com/robots.jpg
im not too good at robots/mecha/futuristic stuff, so i did a study. It doesnt get much more advanced than a NES.
http://www.gino.hostrocket.com/night%20copy.jpg
yet again out of my comfort zone, i decided to attempt an enviroment. I failed. sorry.
Stephen, Yiako~ thanks guys.
Van~ Those poses are from a book called "The Nude Figure" by Mark Edward Smith. Its gotta be french models, cause they are all hairy as hell. I decided to omit the pit hair due to personal preferences.

Hello. I got bored at work tonight so i decided to draw on those tiny post it notes. It was a real slow day today. I work at Gamestop by the way, so as you can see, it was an influence. dont mind the crap quality, or the anatomical errors:)

Aidan, probably becuase i suck at environments ;)
oh and also, i just realized i havent really introduced myself yet. My name is Gino, i live outside of Pasadena, California, near LA. Im 19, i like art and heavy metal, both listening to it and playing it :evilbat: I plan on attending art center next year. I just need to build a decent portfolio.

So your after a crit are you??
Here goes,
Rock eaters do not wear pink ballet slippers! :bash:
:D
Now, what I realy think is that the creature is ok, although it looks a bit flat in places. I think this is down to the shading. You have an obvious bright light source, but the shading on the hidden sides is not a drastic as the areas where the light falls.
And you definately need to add in more forground and backgground details to give a better sence of depth.
Apart from that it looks good, even if he does look like a girls blouse in those ballet shoes. :D
Sleepy
legacy
January 22nd, 2004, 09:08 AM
hey man,
love the rock eater thing but just like sleepy said, the shoes....WTF? lol
then again it adds that playful sense to the picture. I like the busted chains and the fact that he is wearilng some sort of tech. helmet to hide his eyes.
Aidan
January 22nd, 2004, 10:26 AM
The rock-eater looks excellent but why did he get that green and that red!?
Much too saturated for my taste, but maybe its just me. :]

i'll second that. These are lookin awesome helltaxi, and I don't think there is such a thing as drawing too fast. I conciously try to speed up as much as i can.
the figures are great, I just noticed that the heads are a little small, I try to think about making them oversized. when i try to draw them to scale they always turn out to small. just a thought.

my chunderdome WIP. Color is gonna be a battle, i can tell...
for some reason, sometimes i get it down, most times, no. I think its just because i work too fast, as i constantly bitch about. any thoughts?
legacy
January 26th, 2004, 08:33 AM
whenever i start to get down about artwork in generally it helps to think about how far I've progressed or to look back at all the positive feedback people have given me all the years.
also, most of the time i just think about how many people wish they had my skill level just as I wish i had someone elses :P
nice sketch btw :P
van
January 26th, 2004, 09:13 AM
legacy, that rocks. I dont think I have ever really thought about that. I am surrounded here by people who far exceed my skill level. Even a couple of folks here I pretty much idolize. And yet, there are some here who I have passed and even more surrounding me out here where I live. People look at my stuff and go 'How do you do that?!'. I usually shrug it off, but its the same appreciation that I show ehre for people that I look up to.
Helltaxi, working fast is better in my opinion. It allows the creative side of your brain to do the work before your logical side has a chance to screw it up.

January 26th, 2004, 01:38 PM
Amen, your doing fine, that last draw is great (and the heads the right size too). I think i rush things too often as well. to make a drawing that is somewhat satisfactory, I always have to leave it alone for a couple of hours. Or when I am doing a sustained drawing i have to constantly get up from my chair and move around the room to battle frustration. all part of the process.
let it marinate for a while and make a whip ass color piece.

These are sweet. I like the use of the black flame as a graphical/design element on the Unholy Monk's. I like the Bullseye too, although he looks a little charicature. But still, you've somehow managed to keep his likeness.
All I can really say is I envy your pen skills. Those life drawings look like brushpen work? If so, bravo on both clean lines, and interesting line weights.

I really like that last piece you posted. But the main thing bothering me is the lack of focus in the forground. Parts of the middle ground have high detail but its not consistant enough with the forground to give a DoF like look. Assuming that is what you were going for.

Max - I think part of what makes Art Center a good school is that they force you to draw your ass off. You come to a point where you realize that after every drawing, you are learning something and improving. Mileage is really an important part of improving i think, so just draw, carry a sketchbook, fill it up with anything and everything. Im sure im gonna read this later and it will sound very stupid...oh well.
Mike - glad you liked it, made me a tad less insecure :bashful:
Gloominati - you raise good points. They are supposed to be large buildings though, with the idea that it was kind of haphazardly constructed, to be continually expanded upwards? i dunno i gotta do more work on this, the base definately needs to be heavier. Thank you

Thanks for looking fellas
Ben - I have no recent figure studies, havent been to workshop in a while : < soon as i go ill post it up.
Max - I started out after high school at the local community college, Pasadena City College, studying product design and life drawing, trying to build a decent portfolio. I learned alot there, starting taking things seriously. I started Art Center in the Illustration program, and there, you begin with life drawing, head drawing, basic painting classes. I always made it a point to take some sort of vizcomm or other product design styled class to keep up on "that end of things" If youre looking for a solid foundation, id say you cant go wrong with a solid grasp of form and perspective. Then you can start worrying about color and the rest. Ive learned that a messed up line drawing wont look better in color, if anything, more messed up, so i think its important to have strength in basic drawing. Im not one to really preach, though, im still working on all of it, long way to go. Whew.... sorry for being so long winded.

Balsamic, youre correct, these were done for A Game of Thrones, iron throne edition. While im not familiar with the storyline myself, it was pretty fun to do. You guessed em all right, except the last one i believe is tyrrion lannister, i perhaps should have made him uglier :)

My first thought was Tyrion, as there aren't too many scenes in the books with Jaime reading, other than the log of the Kingsguard in the third book. It does kind of read midget now that I look at him again, but the slightly caricatured style makes me think it's a normal sized person. But I digress.
Either way those are really cool and well done. You captured those scenes superbly for not having read the books. How did you land that job, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! Who are your best teachers at ACCD? Do you take many product classes as part of the entertainment design program? Keep up the great work!
Cheers :)

Designboot, cubixxx, gnoll- thanks guys, glad you enjoyed it
RebeccaK- there are a ton of amazing teachers at art center, itd be hard to choose just one. Lately ive gotten the opportunity to take classes with some great artists like Nick Pugh and Mark Goerner, which has been great. Also, Gary Meyer is pretty much a legend. There arent any product classes per se, but i made sure to take a few of em on my own when i was still in the illustration track. Thanks for looking!
wanted to try something different from my usual "style"

I need to probe your brain and steal those skills of yours, eh, anyway I'm sitting here with my jaw somewhere below my waist and pondering what I am to do to be you :er:
I think I'll start over.
I'm saving this down for colour/character/paint inspiration down the road - & thanks for showing us all these pieces; I'll deferentially return for more.

working on refining my main character, Johann, for my senior project. my main concerns are a viking influence reading appropriately, and having a consistant stylization, which is almost there, but not quite. Any input is greatly appriciated. Thanks peeps.

Good stuff. These last few pages of figure drawings look great. Pleasantly loose, and you make the forms interlock nicely.
