Thanks for the comments. Glad you got some value from it. Reilly method is such a beautiful and simple approach. I highly recommended finding a proper classroom if you can. Of course New York and L.A. residents have an abundance of great teachers.
Izer, good luck. Keep me posted with your drawings!

Although he worked on several continuously up to his death, Reilly never published any books himself. There's a thread on the available books on his method here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118194), and one with more background here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=151539).

This is a pretty sweet method. I'm a tad confused about separating light from dark though. I see all the little tone changes, but some of them are really light and subtle. Where do I draw the line?

Just thought I'd bump this thread for those who don't occasionally check out Mr.Legaspi's site (http://www.freshdesigner.com/). The latest tutorial (http://www.freshdesigner.com/how-to-draw-the-head-in-3-quarter-or-side-view/) is about drawing the head in side and 3/4 views along with a corresponding video:

I thought the "pie" construction was rather interesting. Usually I use the ol' "cross with a circle" approach, but I end up making so many adjustments that I may as well have not even used the framework in the first place. Next time I think I'll try Mr.Legaspi's pie, I may have better luck with that.
Also as a side note, I've picked up Mr.Legaspi's approach to hatching in shadows (minus the extra shading at the edges). I really like the flattening effect that comes with that style of shading, I think it's the contrast between the depth in the lights and flatness in the shades that grabs me.

Cool, Thanks!
Looks like the pie shape he uses is essentially the ball-n-cross being cut off at the hair line (top of the pie)
