The helmet design is pretty cool. Do you plan on firing this? If so i assume the non-clay parts will have to come out. Interesting that you are mixing mediums. Love to see your concept sketches if any.

thats really nice, after seeing all the nice sculptures here i have been craving to get into it myself :] it would be cool if you could get the light to work and stuff.. you would have the coolest lamp in town..

hey kress, that is cool! i have been told that the wax castilene works well for the mechanical stuff. it is hard when at room temperature and can be machined, carved, sanded etc. but when you heat it up, even in your hands, it becomes more pliable. i leave my wax by a lamp when working so that it become very kneadable. if you heat it up slowly in a double boiler it melts to a pourable consistency. you can just do all kinds of stuff with it. i think it would have worked perfectly for this sculpture.
keep going, i look forward to seeing your progress.

uno - thanks. i hadnt really thought about it but my buddy did remind me that i could sand it or paint it or whatever after cooking. If I get around to working on this more I might, who knows. maybe ill just move on to the next one?
heres the rough sketch:

bretton - thanks :) I know!!! the light would be soo cool! id have to gut it though and find the right stuff. maybe if Im not too lazy?
foster - glad you like it. when I set out I imagined this crazy thing but honestly the surface came out a lot plainer than I wanted. overall Im happy with it tho - sculpting is way fun.
Ok so I guess I should look into this wax stuff. Im glad I ran into your post because I didnt even know wax-based materials came into the picture. Im gonna have to try it out and see if I can get the detailing I want to happen - I know this was my first try but I felt like I was fighting the sculpey the whole time (i donno tho, maybe that doesnt go away no matter what, haha).
Anyway - thanks a ton for the tips and encouragement. :)
