I got my two sketchbooks merged into one, so if you're a bit confused about what happened, that's the reason why.
My 'second' sketchbook begins at page 12 -
read that ^
enjoy :)

Hey everyone browsing CA.org!
I thought I'd make a sketchbook, for selfimprovement and feedback :D
I can't guarantee that I can keep it updated often, But I'll do my best
Here's some work done from around 2 years ago, I did when I was about 16 / 17 (I'm 21 now)
Please check the last page for something updated

Here's some work from last year. The armored bone is actually from 06.
More traditional stuff, plain pencil and paper, some watercolour :)

April 9th, 2008, 04:09 PM
I like the octopus post some new stuff though
DefiledVisions
April 9th, 2008, 04:15 PM
And here's some more recent stuff from this year, some traditional, some digital.
Please feel free to leave a comment!
The Pig and the Onelegged unicorn is a picture made in 06, but colored it recently.
Dark Ritual is my first digital picture, so the colouring is a bit exagerated :)
I've only been drawing lines all my life so these two months, a total new world of colour and values has been opened to me, and it's so fun and so challenging.
The picture with the cow was made for ImagineFX's weekly forum challenge, with the topic "the grass is greener on the other side"
The concepts with the lizardwarrior in armor, and different heads was thought to be a DWIII entry, but I havn't had time to finnish.

Done and done.
Just thought I'd post some old stuff since many of the sketchbooks here have stuff from 2006 and 2007.

Hey everyone, thought I'd put some sketches up. This monday I bought a sketchbook, and thought I'd try to improve seriously.
I kinda have been thinking over things, what I want to do etc. and I really want to work with concept / digital art. I almost regret playing WoW for 2 years, hardly drawing anything :P .. anyway.. To make up for the loss of 730 days, I thought I'd draw atleast around 4 pages a day in my sketchbook, focusing on anatomy studys etc. things I've never bothered doing seriously.
So what you see here from now on will mainly be that kind of stuff, but also some other works etc. Allthough I cant update everyday, due to scanner, I'll be doodling!
Also posting sketches of my idea for this weeks chow. enjoy.

Here are 7 creatures, and much more to come these coming days / weeks.
Some of the notes are in swedish cause I scribbled 'em down quickly. Never mind them, they'll all be defined in with the final renders.
Still thinking of how to make a great utopia..

Great imrovement, best regard from Bulgaria! Second I want to add some critique about drawing the body forms, you have to study more the human anatomy and places of each muscle! Keep it up I vote EXCELLENT!

nice improvement here mate, I think you should keep at it with the last piece, it needs more room to breath. Allow the fire from the birdie to be reflected in the armour, add shadows and polish it further.
Get some anatomy studies going as well.
It sounds like a lot of negative feedback but I think you are doing good man. Keep at it with the Deep stuff as well.

Clanlord - Thanks, actually I just got 2 anatomy books :bounce: so now I can study :) I have just been very lazy..
Buckster - Thanks, I put my last piece aside because I didn't really know what to do with it, and was a bit tired with it. Thanks for your feedback. Anatomy studies coming up :)
Here's a wip of a personal project, a starwars inspired piece... I've been very inactive lateley, both here and with drawing in general. But I hope to change that now.. as yoda says.. "Do or do not, there is no try."

Updates.
Finnaly done some anatomy studies, and never realised how much help it is to do them. Especially the one where the male body is divided in 8 parts. Taught me alot about how the body is built up just by doing that one hehe

Clanord Thanks for the tip, trying to draw some from imagination. I also got one of these wooden guys on a stick. Funny funny :yum:
Some random sketches last couple of days.. several personal projects going on. Ballistic publishing are calling for entries to the 4th book in Exotique series. My aim is to get published ( yea right ). My mom allways said it's better to aim too high than not aiming at all... or something like that. Anyway, I just thought it would be fun to have that as a goal, who knows what might happen.
some different character sketches.. far far far from the ideal outcome.

July 17th, 2008, 05:05 PM
Here's some more sketches, and I've been to lazy to scan the anatomy work but they exist ;)
enjoy :oneye:
I decided on having a forrest-moose-spirit thing in the background, it makes more sence and adds to the atmosphere. The moose is said to be king of the forrest, but we all know he's inferior to the troll.

July 24th, 2008, 08:08 PM
All I have to say is that I really liked the creature sketch on the last page, I think the name of it was creature 7, thats what it said when I put the arrow over it. It looked a bit like a stingray crossed with a fish with spikes and maybe eaven a shellish surface on top. Very nice.
The picture "Flamewielder" also struck me as well done. And this troll shaman you've just made is awsome. The lightning and brushstrokes on the antlers on the animal skull above the figure is fascinating. I think there is litle space in it though, it seems a bit flat, not the skull, but the front figure, and the picture as a whole. But that's all I can think of.

Progress of c.o.w 119. Unicorn Hunter... The reason why I don't have more wip's until final is because I forgot to save wip's.. was so focused on finnishing on time. Turns out I had enough time lol, anyway. Experimental progress, first time I play around with overlay and multiply layers.. (Aha! so that's how all the pro's get their images to look so cool! :P)

Hey there people! I've now realised how much anatomy studies pays off! These past weeks I've tried to do atleast 2 pages every day, and I really feel I know the body much better.
The following sketch is of the theme 'Divine Entities' and I didn't use any ref for it. I know the characters have a very long torso, and that's only to make them appear as something else than human, something more.
Also my CHOW piece which I didn't get to finnish. Though I'll try to work get it done some day soon :)

some awesome stuff in here man, and some major improvement with your color choices and schemes. it's nice to see some solid figure studies in there.... your creatures are very dynamic and full of energy, but your human and humanoid figures tend to get a little stiff. i have the same problem though, and get pinned for it in classes a lot.
keep up the great work, hope to see a lot more.

Mr Blackbird - Thank you for your kind words! Yea.. I have a major problem with humans, faces and feet in particular. I think it's mainly because I spent all my childhood drawing from imagination, doing dragons and monsters (which can be seen in the beginning of my sb lol) .. only these past weeks/ months have I started focusing on humans... You reap what you sow :)
Prepsage - Thanks.. and man, why didn't you tell me using a windows font is kinda like havinga lens-flare in your piece? :P nah, kidding. It's just that I like the papyrus font.. and my handwriting is not even close to what I want it to be.
here's DSG 1394 Nightmaremonster with 2 heads from 1 head split verticaly. ~2 hours
I think I got lost halfway, cause I ended up with 2 heads without the split from 1 part.. anyhow.. Still realize how little I know about painting. Have a hard time with values and saturation... also added daily scribbles. I try to do two A3pages of poses a day. These are 30second poses

Hey man, I saw your submission in the daily sketch thread and saw you didn't feel your colors are too great. I think you're doing really well, and you're doing the right thing. The best way to learn is just by practicing and making mistakes and finding out what looks good :) Find plenty of references, and don't be afraid to just do studies of boring stuff to try and get a better understanding of light and colors. You've got some really great designs, so just keep at it!

Some time ago I found this posemaniac pages too. It's sometime quite difficult to draw poses from such strange angles of view. I liked to draw them a little bit better so I increase a time limit to 45sec. But maybe after 10 poses I'd like to check my sketch with that given poses and I'm missing this function here. you do a very good job on choosing the base colours and creating a dramatic atmosphere, though sometimes when you go on polishing some pieces loose a bit of their initial looseness... dunno if thats bad or something just realised it while looking at your stuff :)

Dude thanks for popping by over my sketchbook, I thought I'll check out yours in return. Firstly dude, your imagination is just F'ing astonishing seriously some of the characterisation and ideas here blew me away, I love it, your imagination is by miles your strongest skill at the moment. Secondly, you use of colours is pretty dope too. Only problems im seeing is anatomy, for instance theres some pieces which are great, but severely leveled by major anatomy issues, so all I can suggest is keep with the pencil studies, and you'll be ace!
Keep drawing bro!

I love your use of color, it's something I've been trying to work on myself. I agree with the previous comment, a healthy imagination will take you far.
Also, maybe it's just me, but it seems like you like the initial stages of drawing more than finishing up. I actually prefer your sketchier stuff to the finals, it seems to have more energy.

Lilou thank you for your kind words... and I agree with you on the looseness.. don't know why. Strange things tend to happen when I concentrate too much :[
Starf1sh Thanks a ton! very encouraging words.. and I'm going to do something about the anatomy. Going to take Croquis courses from this week forward.. Which I hope will be sweet :) (sweet because I get to learn.. not because.. you know..)
Yamino Thanks! I havn't really been thinking about it until you took it up. My conclusion is that, when I sketch I don't try to think. I just follow some invisible line. I like to work fast when I sketch and just really.. live the idea. And then.. when it comes down to rendering. I get stuck... :( Because then I have to start thinking, which colours, what kind of values. etc. Somedays it's just soo frustrating cause I can't seem to draw at all.. and other days, It's as easy as ever.. I hope practice will enable me to adapt the same loose flow to my rendering.
Lotet Thanks man!
phew.. As mentioned above, I'm gonna start taking Croquis courses each week. Basically it's nude lifedrawing with a model. But instead of having the model stand still for a long time in the same pose, it's more movement, many different poses, each one for only a short time... so expect some nudes every week from now on :yayca:
Also a bit frustrated about painting. I don't know what I'm doing.. and I see so many great pictures, and I can't figure out how they do it.. it's like.. damnit.
As for this weeks updates.. (A3 paper) Face studies.. world's crappiest self portraits that don't look like me at all.. C.O.W - which is giving me hell.. trying to re-figure out how I made my other c.o.w's... and Moleskine action -lot's of creature concept's.

Dude, really digging your concepts here. The creatures are looking great and those pencils are nice. Your painted pieces have a good textures to them but the colors can improve more. I will try avoiding pure blacks whenever you can and probably do some studies to improve in using colors. It is a tough subject but you will improve with those and bring your great creatures to life. Keep it up!

wow you have so much potential!!! I totally envy you!! your lines are so cool!!! specially on those creatures!! seems to be your favorite subject... you do them very well!!!!! the last digis were pretty neet, still I agree with MaestroAndres... the colors seem too.... hmmm... how do I say it right.... 'clean'? I mean they shine so bright and the saturation is very high.... though I think you chose them very well, nice complementary contrasts and such :)
I know exactly what you mean by saying you're not in the right mood... I mean it is lame but thats how the truth is!! some days I feel like my brain's totally empty even though the urge to draw is there... and then I think about the other things I should do instead of drawing, so I leave it and fell bad at the same time that I did it... geez!!! life suck sometimes!!! but now enough with the selfpittyness! let's go back to the table and work on our weeknesses :) I'm pretty sure you will reach one day the level you messure yourself with!!!

hey man, I can see that you are experimenting quite a bit, very cool stuff, I like the looseness of the last couple of pieces.
Speaking of that, I loved the #67 sketch, the very rough ones. I think you added too much details too quick after step 4 or so but that is a great start man, mucho impressed.
Stay loose and stay focused.
Good work

great studies. you have some really nice lines with the pencil and awesome creature designs.
still like your arctic dinosaur. one thing to think about would probably be the head. I can't really imagine what it would look like with a closed mouth. of course it could have a very flat head but I'm not sure if that'd fit to the rest of the body.
last greyscale creature looks really promising!

Nice studies! Keep doing them because they will help you. Your colors and value look very good, and I love the looseness of your brushstrokes. I'm still trying to figure out how you manage to create the fresh, airy feel in your paintings. The pen sketches are delicious.

Velkroboy - haha sorry about that man... hehehe made my day.
Maestro Andres - Thanks a bunch! I'll have to start painting some bananas and apples.
lilou - thank you very much! yea too saturated, which is very often my problem :( hehe, hell yes, time to kick ass with our tablets.
Buckster Thanks a bunch man. Some how I have problem sketching up a piece, it just flows.. and then when I start working on it I loose ally my initial looseness. Will have to work on that. Will stay loose and focused, Cheers!
Algenpfleger - haha thanks :D also, thanks for giving me some tips about the books in your SB. Will probably order one now when I get money at the end of the month. Cheers.
Monotony - Thank you! still regret I failed to deliver the piece in time. Oh well. As for the new beast.. my limited colour knowledge ruined it halfway haha. I had to rush it so I made some last-minute-duplicate-layer textures ... It looks really crap now, but I will re-work it after week's chow.
Nightblue - thank you very much. I'm also trying to figure out how I do haha.. more delicious pen sketches coming in.
Wow.. never had to respond to so many comments before.. I must be popular :rocker: haha joke. Thank you all very much for your comments.. it's what keeps me going.
More nude studies from this week, aswell as chow wip, and continuation on the beast - which is kinda ruined. Will rework it later... also been slacking with my other studies, especially face / selfportraits.. damn.

serriusly, you just punched trough a big mental wall there, great update, love the pen n paper stuff, the anathomy is looking great, and I see ur getting the crosshatching down pretty well to.

nice progress!
I would recommend changing the way you transition from grayscale to colors. You seem to hit the colors better when you start from color. I would recommend painting in color more often, and if you are going from a grascale image to color, be bolder in your application. Don't be afraid to lose some fine detail because you painted over it, and don't leave any black or white.
I look forward to see where you take things :)

I can't have you hanging on my shoulder for free ya know.. :P
hope to see some updates from you soon, til then.
Man Made God - thanks! Ill try to have some more sexy work with next update
Buckster - Thank you very much, and for giving some feedback - really needed. I think what I'm doing a bit wrong is that I don't think when I start a piece, I just start scribbling and painting. And then when I got something, I havn't given a thought to color and thats when I get stuck, like with this one. I got stuck with the colours, so I just gave it a warm tone and added some fire.. shame on me.
thanks mate, appreciate it.
Only paper-work today.. too tired to work - I should get a hold of myself. Missed half of this weeks life-drawing due to train delay.. really sucky.
I'm happy the weather was good enough for me to go out and draw some birds.. I suggest you try it once, I've not had so much fun and felt so relaxed in a long time. It really makes you think on how to depict it in an instant.. drawing moving geese isn't easy.

wooow!!! the last one has some good potential! like... some underwater scene or something! I know these are very rough pieces, but may I suggest you try to create interesting moods and atmosphere, by using gradients, layer settings and stuff. the earlyer you do this in your works the sooner you will get a better feeling for the scene you're painting.
I know this motivation issues... but still, never let it keep you from paintig too long!

Love the underwater piece, the composition is really nice. I think the reason you don't like the last steps is all parts of the painting have similar level of details and sharpness. Have you tried using softer brushes or air brushes? While I've never been able to use airbrush as a rendering brush, I found it very useful to create atmosphere/luminosity/depth or do small adjustments to part of an image. The softness of airbrush would also make a lot of sense in an underwater scene.
I hope you don't mind me doing a paint-over with a few very quick blue, red, and black airbrush strokes: http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd214/lxc2000/randomstuff/DV_paintover.jpg

whoa Murli, that was so nice of you to say, made me really happy to read :) *BIG hug*
but you shouldn't let your day be dull :/ there are tons of cool things you can do, don't stress yourself so much, remember painting is something fun to you, you do it cos you like it, and you're in the very comfortable position where you don't have to prove anything, so just paint, try to learn and enjoy the mistakes :)
As for your under water scene I agree with Nightblue, its the same thing I mentioned before, like tryig to use some gradients ( or big soft airbrushes) and layer options to create more atmosphere in your pics. it helps a lot :)
but some of the orange tones are way too bright ( in the lower ground) they take my eyes away from the ship and keep me from moving into the far bg of the scene... I think you don't need so many 'highlights' in this one :)

ReviseTheMethod - Thank you man! good seeing you around here again ;)
Wheew.. In a good mood today. For some reason I have the song "I'm so horny" by Mousse-T echoing in my head.. that's a good thing right?
Today I discovered something important - a new way of painting.. or actually, some, in my opinion, key principals behind painting:
Light and contrast
Control of colors, saturation especially.
It all came when I was checking out Dile_'s homepage and I saw a concept piece of a fishlike humanoid holding a spear.. And after looking at it a while, reflecting over how he had painted the piece, a eureka moment appeared.
The crocodile was made before I had my 'eureka' :) enjoy.

October 28th, 2008, 06:10 PM
Ooooh! Killer stuff =)
Like with all your lizard-ish designs, the crocodile looks really cool =)
It would probably be good to try and push out the head a bit more, since it blends in a bit too much with the rest of the body.
Adding some well placed highlights would really make it pop =)
Sweet work on the new style! :) Nice sense of movement in the phoenix, and the colors are working well too.
From a more critique oriented viewpoint: I think that it needs another leg in the shot to really come across as an easily read phoenix =)
I had some trouble "seeing" the phoenix, although I knew that that's what it was :)
Keep up the great work! :>

I think you should extend the phoenix picture further to the right and maybe even cropping it more on the left. The focus point (the head) is too far to the right and to close to the border of the picture, it leads the eye out of the frame.
And I would change the background color for the reactor creature, it competes to much with the creature, something more subdued would make the creature pop out more.

whoa O_O !!! your progress is impressing! your paintings are getting better and better, my fav is the second in post #132, great texture, super awesome smoke like, great movement and the desaturated colors fit quite well !!! the phoenix has great feel of movement too, and the fire is captured masterfully...
I'm glad you discovered new ways of painting, this is a great sign of your improovement! It's really not easy to look carefully at a painting you would like to learn from, and find out what it is that makes it so much better than your own works... ReviseTheMethod - Thank you very much, great inputs. I havn't planned on polishing them any more than what they are since they're concepts. But I'll take your advice with me for later stuff!
thanks.
Dannelf- Thanks alot man! Yea I realise now the piece has the same amount of hardness over all.. and you're very right about the smoke :) thanks.
Mokinzi - Thanks alot! - ofcourse I remember you :asspat:
Flamable - haha thanks!.. I really should be doing more dragons :( now I want to do more dragons!
Shalite - Thanks! keep pushing it yourself :)
Lingmerth - THanks for the critique! very much appreciated. I did some different crops, and it looked a lot better when I cut a part of the left so the head got more centered. And you're very right about the background for Reactor.. didn't have a clue about what to do so just took a bright yellow (what the hell?) I just might give it a new background. thanks.
Lilou - THank you! I hope you keep babbling cause I like to read it :yum: .. and I also hope you update with some new art :D about watching other people's art .. I find it dificult with complete illustrations - I just find myself being lost in the awesomeness.. haha, however what really helps is to see the wip's behind the piece, or some tutorial - because I think the information given by the different steps is really good.
Lotet - thanks man!

love watching your development man - its great to see someone really progress
with your weapon sheets, it might be worth, when your doing these concept sheets, to try out some really wierd shapes and designs, just to see if anything interesting comes out of them - at the moment they seem a little similar to each other with only slight variations... having said that tho, the second sheet of daggers do seem quite dynamic....i dunno, maybe that comment doesnt help too much :p
looking good man
your new chow looks like it could be something special, finish it up good!

Lilou - thanks, you've pushed my sketchbook further to page 6, and helping me realise my goal of a new page within 2 weeks.. 12 days.. new record! :) cheers
Strybjorn - thanks man! I totaly agree with you about the weapons, the thing is - the guy im doing them for wanted a specific look - so this is kinda the most I could get out of it design-wise and still stay true to his original idea.
aah page 6 :yayca: .. I cannot finnish my chow, sadly. I've realised my knowledge of anatomy and especially humans -faces and skintones- is too limited. I wont pick up the digital medium for some time now. Instead I'm off to the bookstore in search for a good anatomy book. I'll try to work on my pencil values and then get back to painting.

you got some really nice stuff and got good expression within ur concepts.
but every time i saw one of ur images where some sort of light or flame was involved it seemed a little too dull, especially in the earlier concepts. that could even be the style in itself, i could be wrong. but i think u should add a white or a really light tone of wateva color u using at the core of the light source or glow or flame etc. just to emphasize that aspect of the image.
but you r definately more developed than me lol.
keep posting coz i like.

Dannelf - Hey man! For this COW, and the earlier work posted about Yggdrasil I've only worked from lines. Diana - Allways a pleasure to have you around :) I chose this layout because I felt it would be the best way to combine them... uh..can't describe it... Each of the creatures works alone aswell, so might make them one by one, and then make some kind of collage with all 4 together, morphing into each other with this composition.
You'll have to wait a bit longer for colour stuff though.. I'm a lazy sucker :P

Very inspiring stuff. You have a great sense of form, and your attention to detail is really quite amazing.
I think what makes your work most successful, however, is your radical eye for composition.
I don't know what to criticize. That stuff is gorgeous.

November 26th, 2008, 03:07 AM
look ast you pumping out these amazing sketches as if you were a fucking vending machine:P Put on a quarter, wait 30 seconds and you have a handfull of excellence! Hehe, well anyhoot, I like the dragons, as I pointed out earlier, they are a delight to the eyes, your life studies too, are very impressive and very well done. You PS stuff could use some more work, but that is a harder field to get good at entirely, so just keep doing that stuff and you will see improvement quite quickly.
When it comes to using acrylics, there is a very easy way of getting much more interesting results, and even get it to behave more or less like cheap oils. Not like the good kind of oils, the kind of oils you would actually spend lots of moolah on, oh god no, but still they can become quite decent for studies, i guess. What you do is you go to any art supply (depot, hehe), and you get a few things to blend into the acrylics, and there are about four things you need. One, you need retarder, this is a substance that keeps the paint from drying, and it also makes it thicker, which is great, for some rough pencil work, and it gives it a very nice feel to work with. Secondly you need some acrylic medium, if I remember correctly, this is in fact mostly acryl, and something else, and you use that, like you would use painter medium with your beloved oils, or like you would usually abuse water with acrylics:P Thirldy you need something called airbrush smoothener or something, it is what you blend into paint to make it able to go through an airbrush without clogging it, and it is great for keeping the paint from lagging on the canvas. Lastly I would advice to get some thickner, just to add to the paint, if you need to add to it, and also some glaze, to put some nice touch on your painting at the end.
Now when you are going to paint your masterpiece, I would first test out the results of grounding the canvas, plate or paper, with a mix of the different things you have bought, so that you see what works best for you. I use an even mix of retarder, airbrushwhatnot and medium, this gives a nice smooth surface on paper.
Oh, and you should also get hold of some really good titanium white, and make sure it is titanium, not zink, seeing as that is a generaly better and more covering paint.
There, I really hope that helped out a bit!
Oh and another thing, might be even cooler to to Midgardsormen, or the Wyrm of Midgard, the great wyrm that lay at the edge of the world, going the entire way around it, and biting it's own tail. That could be awesome I think:)

wooow!! you really know how to amaze me :D those sketches look fabulous!!!
about the composition.... I'm sure its just a matter of taste, first time I saw it, it remindet me of the old bible illustrations, with the four evangelists. I know these have nothing to do with your pic, but the composition is kind of similar and I always found it, dunno, boring and too constructed.... maybe it would be an opition to really do them seperatly (each with its own frame) and put them together in to one pic...
yeah, winter sucks... !!!
oh you quit your job? hmmm thats what I'd like to do, but still I don't think I could earn enough money with freelance work to pay my bills, so I keep on going to work. but you have my full respect and I wish you all the luck and sucsess :)

Wilbur - thank you very much!
MischeviousLittleElf - Thanks for filling me in on the details! lol :D School has all the paint and stuff I need, thought I've never heard of thickeners. Will have to ask my teacher.
When I paint I just put out some colours on a pallette and start laying down colours.. thats where I used to get stuck, but thanks to some art books and from learning the hard way digital painting I found out it's much easier to lay down some underpainting first hehe.
I've been thinking about Midgårds ormen.. it's definitely something.. there's a myth where Thor goes fishing and accidently catches the serpent. That could be really cool :) will have to sketch up some more.
cheers.
Diana - Thank you! and thanks for digging up this pic.. never seen it before. And what a boring picture haha. There's no interaction inbetween them, and it's like frozen in time - which is oposite to what I'm aiming for :) don't worry, I'll do everything I can to not make it into anything like this.

Those lines look great! Looks like you're seriously getting your process down in terms of line weights, and the poses are very dynamic too.

The red dragon up there is looking more and more awesome... Looking forward to see it finished ^^ And yeah, those studies are getting great too! Would like to see you be more playful with experimenting on different body types eventually ^^ That is something I find really exciting.
What wacom tablet is it your cousin have? Cool sketches!

Thanks for the tip mokinzi .. I havn't really tried experimenting before. I prefer the stereotypical sexy body.. :P
Hey man. I can't work on my stuff at the moment since I'm at family. When I get home though :) ..
to answer both your questions - It's a Wacom Volito2 .. never heard of it actually. It's really tiny. The drawing surface is as big as my hand and I guess it's not as good as I think it is. It's just that my intuos 2 is old.. and doesn't have the technology all newer wacoms have :D
It's great for laptops though.. just place it on your lap and chill in the sofa haha.
Man Made God
December 24th, 2008, 09:40 AM
I had a Volito 2 before i bought my intuos. Gave it to my cousin, but it was a great first tablet. Really cheap and surprisingly accurate. The only real issue I had was with the surface, it's just hard plastic and it's more slippery than the rubbery sheet on the intous. I'm pretty sure they don't make them any more though.

ManMadeGod - Yea I agree.. the surface was the only thing bugging me. It was fun to draw with though :)
Clanlord - Hey man, things are geting better and better! Thanks. By shadows, do you mean adding depth to the pictures by rendering everything and not just the lines?
Mery Xmas to you too!
Lotet - Gott nytt år :D hehe. Thanks man.. been there. Just outlive it.. I havn't been able to really lift the pen since november. Just these past days have really sprouted my creativity and imagination. Sometimes it's just really good to get away from the whole drawing too.
Reject-D - Thank you!
Allright, back from a great christmas with family in denmark. I enjoyed it alot, and it was really good to leave my home for a while.. let the senses rest and just relax.. which easier said than done with my fighting cousins :P
Anyway.. here's a moleskine dump.. these days have been kind to me.
My favorite's the Chimera and my semi-self portrait with some lyrics from a Katatonia song called In The White.. really like em. Great melancholic melodic band, sounds a bit like Opeth. Check em out ;)
sorry for the blurr... to lazy to fix it now. And the lyrics are miss-heard... still a good song :P

Great stuff as usual, mate =) Lot's of nice movement, both subtle and obvious.
Keep working on your rendering, and push the values a bit more.
The dynamic part of your work needs to be complemented by strong values to deliver that bitchin' impact that we began to see in this (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=539222&stc=1&d=1229087864)! :)

Good to see another update! Man (or mate:wink:), you draw some freaky shit, the COW process screens are pure inspiration! How did your creature stuff improve so fast, you got any resources you want to share?
DefiledVisions
January 28th, 2009, 05:56 PM
Man Made God - Mate! :D about the creature stuff.. hmm, no Idea really. I've been a bit inspired by Linda Bergkvist's (http://www.furiae.com/) tutorials. The way she blends airbrush and hard brushes.. gives a kinda photographic touch to it.
Other inspirations.. looking at other peoples stuff, and drawing. To be honest I don't know, cause I hadn't been drawing in a month until I started on the cow and chow.
Painting traditionally has given me lots of insight about contrast and light vs dark tones.. I've allways had trouble grasping it in painting.. until I did some still-life's with oil and it's like .."aha.. so thats how" - how that helps creature creation though.. I don't know :P
hope it gives some clarification.
Did a dreamhouse.. speedie kinda. And made a sketch for the next chow.. not at all what I had in mind, but I still like it - gonna be interesting to see where this leads.

Kickass compositions in your digitals, man! A lot of cinematic shots with dynamic poses. My favorit has to be the lizard warrior vs the leviathan. It's also good to see you're working hard on your pencils. You're making some really good progress with that. The best part about it is that it will also show in your digis. Rock n Roll!

Oden - Hey!long time no see, thanks :) glad you dropped by :D
yeah no kidding man, school has been keeping me busy busy, not much time for art! I'm gonna go crazy this summer though. :sungod:
Keep working on that monster, I really think it would be worth it, even if the comp is over...it's a great piece. Sometimes the difference between a piece of crap (to your eyes) and being on the road to making an awesome painting is just a few more hours of getting through the tough stuff.
Paint over the background with something simple, a flat dark colour just to give yourself a new slate...then just stare for a while at it or sketch on a diff layer to see if anything works.
The monster itself is awesome so far, the skin really has luminance. Maybe give that head a cast shadow or something on its body, and start using a hard brush to define the fur as one big mass, give it some edges.
hahah, sorry, I just hate seeing awesome stuff like this get tossed aside. I know the frustration though. :D

Love your last piece, that creature is so cool! The colour scheme is awesome too. I agree with Oden, don't give up on it! He said like all the important things too, I guess. I'd like to see you give some more depth and life to that little eye, though! It can really make a big difference.
And that dreamhouse... So adorable :) I want to live there!

Thanks a ton for the tips! I didn't intend on working more on it.. but you've made me change my mind - gonna finish some other stuff and then get to work. Thanks for pushing me!
Mokinzi - You know what they say, the eye is the mirror of the soul .. I'll put some extra thought into the eye, thanks :)
I hate my computer, it can't handle pictures over 2500 pixels.. trying a new workflow with this piece. Basically it's what caravaggio did.. a medium background colour, then flesh out highlights in white, and shadows in a darker colour.. then refine, and add hues. Just been fooling around :D ... or I should just stick to how I did the sound creature.

Awesome developement and progress man. You've really developed since i last saw your work. Your drawings are looking very nice, and your paints are starting to get better also. Allright.. I kinda missed this weeks chow.. but heck - wasn't pleased with my piece at all anyway :)
Starting on a personal project for fun. Those of you familiar with Blizzard's Diablo franchise might recognise these characters.
I am going to illustrate each character class with their personal set.
I'm currently working on the necromancer and druid, which are my favorite characters..
The necromancer set is called Trang-Ouls Avatar, and by lore we learn that Trang-Oul is the dragon upon which the world lies. He is worshiped by the necromancers, and in return grants them wisdom and magic enchantations.
In the game, if you have the complete set - your character turns into a monster-class called vampire, which looks more like a tall wraith-like creature. I will try to incorporate some dragon in the piece aswell :P
More to come these days!
DefiledVisions
February 17th, 2009, 08:32 PM
The druid sketch..
In the game, the druid is a hybrid character, with a setup of different types of playstyles: melee-type spells and abilities in form of shapeshifting; defensive and offensive summoning spells and range-type nature spells.
I've chosen to depict him in with parts of the summoning-spell tree and shapeshifting-tree.
To the left you can see a summoned creature called carrion vine. It morphs into the shapeshift ability known as werewolf, which in turn, morphs into the werebear, which morphs back into the most powerful of summons - grizzleybear.
They're all interlaced to show that they're a part of the druids abilities.
DefiledVisions
February 18th, 2009, 11:37 AM
More work on the druid, and started working on the Sorceress.
Her set is called Tal-Rashas wrappings, and in the game, Tal-Rasha is the head of the Horadrim brethren, a brotherhood who hunts down the three prime evils to seal them away from the mortal world.
Though they fail to seal away the last of the brothers, Baal. Tal-Rasha then voluntarily seals Baal within himself, and is imprissoned within a tomb forever.
The sorceress is a pure spellcaster, with fire ice and lightning. So I'm going to depict all three elements, and try to give the piece the feeling of her being possesed by some twisted presence.
How that's going to be done I don't know yet.. :P
I'm also going to change the druid piece, by having him moving towards the viewer as in the necromancer piece. As it reads at the moment, there's no interaction - I want him to look away, being occupied by his summoning, but still have him interact with us by walking our way.
Oh and.. today it's 1 year ago I got my wacom tablet... time goes fast!
