discussion for how people present themselves in interviews in the games industry. I usually try to dress nice but not over do it. I do the button up shirt and jeans sort of approach. It shows you care how your present yourself, but that you're still a casual game developer. I do know some people that make it point to not dress up more than a t-shirt and shorts, yet know a few who go as far as wearing a tie. Just taking a poll to see other people views on this.

slacks and a collar shirt should be good. shoes not flip flops. I think a tie might be too much. Good luck!

As someone with green hair i may not be the best one to talk about this but i have found that an artist can pretty much get away with an old sack as long as he and the sack are clean and ironed/pressed. shave (if you need to), wash and wear your newest smart/casual and you'll be fine. I have been known to wear black bondage trousers, my 16 year old leather jacket and green dreadlocks and still get the job. Artists are expected to be wierd :)

Yeah, look your best, even if it's an "alternative" best. Clean up good and put yourself together and it will be fine, no ties required (unless it's part of your normal look).

i'm such a slob, the last interview i went to i went in my old faded cordaroy pants with a few paint stains (not the kind that is intentionally put down). and teeshirt. but with my brand spanking new portfolio. needless to say i got the job.

Well, if you have soiled your pants, a shirt that has mustard stains on it, and rat tunnels in your hair then you might not get the job even if you are great.

No matter how well you dress, one thing stands above all, never ever under any circumstances, regardles which direction the conversation/interview is going, tell your interviewer your not wearing any underwear....
really
Unless of course they are particularly taken with you, but then your job goes into a different arena altogether on the cutting edge of legal. lol.
Watch Mtn Dew commercials, dress like them!

My two cents:
Dress as you would for any professional interview. If the atmosphere is more casual then you show your effort to look descent, and if you show up and its a more professional environment you don't look like a dork.
I've been to interviews both kinds of places... I wore the same suit (black dress with jacket) for both. Got offered both, too. I'm not advocating a black dress for the guys, by the way- I'd suggest chinos/khakis/slacks - clean and pressed, a dress shirt - cleaned and pressed too, and a tie and nice shoes (my husband wears Docs when he interviews). Oh, and one more thing - avoid perfume and colognes!!! Nothing hurts your chances more than causing your interviewing to have an allergic reaction to you! Yeah, it probably won't happen, but then again - it might.
For those who bristle at looking conformist or that they'll come across as snobs, I look at it this way. The first thing that will speak for you is your personality. The second is your enthusiasm. These are even before you crack open your portfolio. (An interviewer told me once that I actually didn't get the job because I was trying to be so polite I seemed as though I didn't care about the job.)
And as other people have mentioned, your work will speak volumes more than anything else. However you don't want your potential employer to have written you off before you even show your work.
Hope all this helps. :)
