Edit: time to revive this thread! So I'm in my second semester at CCA now. Although my major is only remotely related to concept-art (im combining industrial design and interactive design) I still love painting. I hope to continue improving as much as I can and Ill post my process here.
Cheers!
im a high school student, going to graduate next year. im hoping to be able to study at cca or art center. what major, that i dont know yet.
started a sketchbook on cg-society, but it wasn't very helpful.
i hope you guys can help me assess how much i have to improve to be accepted at either school.
thanks!

amazing! :D lets see more.
Your anatomy and use of tone and colour is excellent, keep doing that. Perhaps a good way to build a good portfolio is to have a good variety, keep those figures coming and also some still life and environment. I think you are more than talented enough to get into school.
Dont just show the finished pieces, show your little doodles and personal notes, it's always nice to see a bit of your personality
:)

Nice works man! The second figure drawing is ace! A solid portfolio will have good variety, but also some cohesion. Maybe pick a theme of some sort. Something important to you. I dont think you will have any problem getting in. Just make sure you have a scholarship!Schools like to see self portraits too. I dont really know what other advice to give.
Keep posting! We like to seeee!

Hey
haven't posted for ages, but now I'm finally finished with the finals and college application.
I hope I can update more often. It'd be nice to get some critique, I know you guys are just waiting to rip me apart. ;)
first two are self portraits (my very first two actually! second one turned out to be more accurate)
last two are sketches for paintings I intend to paint with oil (or acrylics maybe)
and the middle one, well, nothing much to say really.

just another practice. I focused on skin tones mainly. I still don't know if I like this one or not. :/

Your anatomy is incredible and I'm another who is jealous - You will go very very far if you keep up this kind of skill level. Awesome. Thank you for the inspiration!

spiralpen - haha thx! to be honest i dont care about the project, just want it to be over. :) well, at least I had fun painting it!
Urötskidoji - thx!
YUYU - thx. I checked out your sketchbook and love it! its nice to see someone from beijing btw. I used to live there ... ah, good times. :)
here's my drawing final from last semester. It's essentially a slideshow of various environments in the novel "Veniss Underground" (my favorite book, its wicked!) the quality is terrible, as it is sized down twice (once for the actual slideshow, second time for the youtube upload.)
video slideshow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVOM9CEA-5A)
is there a way to embed the video into the post? i couldnt figure it out. I attached the first portion of the slideshow, so if u want to see the whole thing, please click on the link.

Aryeh - thx for the reminder. I do have a tendency towards hard edges ... it's just faster than trying to "sfumato" everything. :P
insane lemur - thx! I think my professor liked it a lot, not much criticism received.
Here are some process sketches. They are for a self-portrait project in my graphic design class combining abstract shapes, text type and different media. I cant show the final image atm, because my prof has it.
