View Full Version : Edit--> paste in original location?

Ok, this has always annoyed me in Photoshop.

Why is it that when I copy a layer (or drag it in from a separate document), the copy shows up on a seemingly random place when pasted?

Is there a way to edit-paste where the layer you paste in has the same position with respect to the upper left corner as the layer was when it was copied?

Sure, there's ctrl+j to duplicate a layer without the copy budging, but what if you're trying to drag one in from a different document? Say I have two documents, and each are 2,000 X 3,000 pixels. I want to drag in an adjustment layer with a mask on it from Document A. When it gets into Document B, it's all out of place and moving it can be a pain on the workflow.

Why can't PS position the dragged-in layer with some respect to its original position?

Is there some kind of function I'm missing here?

Thanks.

Hold shift when transferring the layer :). I do believe both docs have to be the same size though.

Hi

As mentioned above, if you click- drag- shift+release from one document to another, the new layer will be aligned in the new document relative to their upper left corners (even if the documents are different sizes).

If you drag something from your LAYERS MENU instead of directly from a document, results may be less predictable.

If you CLICK the layer menu in a document and "duplicate layer" to another document, it works the same as click-drag-shift+release. aligning the new layer with the upper left corner of the document.

If you just use click-drag-release the point, then you click and drag from "document A" will end up wherever you release your mouse button in "document B". In other words, you have control over the drag assuming you carefully choose where you click and where you release.

Hope that makes sense. It's easier to explain such things in person while demonstrating on the computer.
