Just to make sure you get the title of my sketchbook thread, my name is Mike Burns.

I've been putting off making one of these for a while now but I think it would be very beneficial and fun to have my own so here's the first entry. I also have my own blog so I'll try and make it a little bit different from that.

If interested in seeing my blog just click HERE! (http://artburns.blogspot.com/)

I'll start off with some of the stuff in my sketchbook, it only seems natural.

First 2 images are some characters I came up with, the second is actually based on this really weirdly dressed man I saw walking around my campus one day.

The 3rd image is a study I drew in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

4th is a caricature of magician/performer Penn Jillette

5th are some sketches I did on the backs of receipts while working at my job at a supermarket.

Nice linework! Your first character is hilarious! :) Keep posting.

Thanks chuck18mp! I enjoy drawing humorous things so there's more where that came from ;)

Here are some more examples of work, a little less sketchy, but still sketches at heart.

I figure I should introduce myself a little bit at some point, but I don't think I can handle that right now so maybe tomorrow :P

List of images:
1. Creature design I did a while ago not based on anything in particular, but I really like the texture I used for his skin.

2. Character design. Her name is Somnipathy and she manipulates people's dreams and turns them into her slaves.

3. Environment design I did this past year, one of my firsts. It's the image that's on my business card. It's beginning to become outdated though I think.

4. Drawing I did of Jeff Buckley over a year ago, but I still think this has a lot of nice things going on, despite having some issues.

5. This is the most recent of the images I'm posting. I was really aiming to draw something disgusting and unnerving. I think the coloring enhances teh creepiness too.

I figure since this thread is all about me then I should probably let the viewers know a little about myself! I hope this is a good idea.

As of right now I am currently entering my junior year at Syracuse University, and I'm majoring in Illustration. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, and I've been taking art classes since I've been in 3rd grade, and I even went to an art high school in my home of Philadelphia. I have always had an interest in drawing monsters and interesting characters and telling stories. I look forward to starting my career in Illustration and I hope that at some point I can do concept work for video games and movies.

If there is anything else you might want to know just leave a post and I'll be happy to answer!

Here's a drawing of a creature I came up with while at work...

The first 3 images were made for my Monster Design class. The first one was based on the theme "ice/snow" and the next two were based on the theme "insect". The last piece is a monster I came up with for fun on my own. I laid down some ink splotches and blew on it with a straw in order to get the silhouette, then I scanned that in and worked into the silhouette with Photoshop.

You have a class just for designing monsters?! Sweet. :D
You have a great imagination, glad to see you posting again! :)

Thanks Linguini! I'm currently taking an independent study with one of my professors, so I got to pick my own topic and I decided to concentrate on monster design :)

1) Quick painting I worked on in between poses during figure painting today in class.

2) Had a long day at work, started scribbling in my sketchbook and this gradually appeared after a few hours of working on it. I'm pretty satisfied with this, I don't draw environments very often and they are never this complex.

Designs for my 3 little pigs, full illustrations coming soon! Based on the story that I am writing which is my own version of the classic story of the 3 Little Pigs. In my version the pigs fight the wolf.

Here's a couple dragons I designed for one of my Illustration classes and a drawing I did for a personal painting I'm doing. The Moose-thing-guy is actually a new drawing for an old idea. The older piece had a lot of things not working for it.

This is the 1st of 3 illustrations for my current 'book' assignment. I chose to illustrate my rewrite of the 3 Little Pigs. This one would act as the cover of the book. To give you some background, in my version of the story the 3 pigs fight the wolf using weapons made out of the materials they built their houses with in the original story.
