i need help ! dont we all haha .
i have Painter x & wacom 9x12 intuos3 for about two years now . $600 + .

and think i made a meager financial mistake .
i like to draw with mostly pencil or pen / calligraphy pen .

but i run in to so many road blocks with painter im wondering if i got the wrong program for what i do .

win i draw , i like defined well thought out lines ( no shading , stippling , cross-hatching , blending , ( dull i know but defined ) i never learned color in the 5 years of high shcool art . ( pretty black & white ) i like to design things like character designs , vehicles , buildings & structures as well as patterns & symmetrical drawings . i was heavily influenced by Leonardo's art . love the detail & visible functionality of his drawings .

what im looking for is - if im just using painter / or the tablet in the wrong way , or should i have purchased - illustrator or Coral draw or some other drawing program ??? is painter good for drawing or just painting = brush strokes ???

my lines are very shaky and i havent goten around the learning curve of not being able to rotate the tablet as i would a peace of pappier .( i get more use out of drawing 2d with turbo cad than i do painter )

feel very lost ....
any advice would be greatly appreciated !

There's no reason why you couldn't continue to use Painter, especially for the top two styles. Try using the Pen Tool and remember that it's no good rotating the tablet, you need to rotate the canvas (Spacebar+Alt). Otherwise, yes, Illustrator (or similar) might be better for the more geometrical/clean-lined/technical drawings.

Hi,

To make your freehand lines smoother:

1. Open the Brush Controls palettes (Window > Brush Controls > General will open all Brush Controls palettes in a docked group).

2. Open the Brush Controls' Spacing palette, then move the Damping slider to 100%. Now your brush strokes should not look so shaky, if at all shaky.

3. If you like the way the brush variant works with the Damping slider at 100%, save it as a custom brush variant with a unique name not already used by Painter.

Another way to temporarily rotate the image to any angle to make drawing at odd angles easier and more comfortable:

1. Click the E key to activate the Rotate Page tool.

2. Click and drag the image to the angle you want.

3. Click the B key to continue painting.

4. Click the E key again to rotate the image to another angle, or double-click in the image to return the image to its normal upright position.
