Ahoy!

So, my sister's been doing a bit of sculpting for her uni course, and I finally decided to bum some sculpey off her, since I got myself worked up to do some sculpting. I've always made things out of all sorts of stuff, but my only (recent) sculpting experience is a very small amount of green-stuff modeling on some warhammer conversions, so it was a bit of a learning curve here.

I've probably spent about 20 hours on this guy over the last 3 days, using almost exclusively one of those modeling tools you can get from games workshop stores and occasionally a scraperboard scraper or scalpel; he's 14 cm (just under 6") tall.
(It probably would've been a good idea to attach him to a baseplate before I started, but I didn't actually have the metal at the time, so I made do.)

I know I took a bit of 'artistic license' with the musculature, mostly 'cause my anatomy's not quite as good as I'd like it to be—though working in 3d certainly helps, I have to say.
There are a couple of little tweaks to do before he gets baked, and I'm going to lean him backwards a bit 'cause my armature wasn't quite as solid as I'd've liked and there's a bit of flex in his torso, meaning he's leaning a bit too far forwards in the final pics.
Anyways; since it's my first major undertaking of this sort, crit away! He's still soft so there's still time for (not-major, preferably ) adjustments; looking forwards to painting him (though I'm not quite sure about colours yet; suggestions?)

Very impressive! For an unexperienced sculptor you sure seem to know what you are doing. As for the anatomy, since it's a demon you can probably get away with making unnatural muscles and still continue to have a realistic appearance. Great work!

Great job! The hands, feet and head in particular is very good. As for the muscles they remind me of the resident evil games concept art, in that the figure is bulging and asymetrical. My only crit is that the pectoralis looks a little flat...
Just take a little time to smooth everything out before baking (take a look at the the tutorials here for info on how to "brush down" a sculpt) and it will look great:)

So far, it is looking good.

Given your strong conceptualization background, I don't believe you'll want for curious creatures to develop. And you've certainly picked up the process and run with it for this beastie.

I hope we'll see more of your efforts with clay in this section of the site.

Corpsehand; thanks kindly! I hoped that'd be the case, glad to hear it.

Doggy; cheers! I was particularly happy with the head and hands :D
I've made a couple of tweaks to the muscles since these photos were taken and think he's a little better now, but I might work on the pecs a little still.
I had a bit of a look around for brushing down, you mean with alcohol or turps? I'm curious as to how much this would smooth out details; I guess a bit of experimenting's in order—what would you recommend?

FightingSeraph; thanks :)

KingUnicorn; cheers! I've gotten the bug now, so hopefully you'll be seeing plenty more :D

In that vein, actually, I've begun a new model, quite different in style; I'm aiming for a sharp sort of vinyl-figure type of look with this; again, don't have any metal so I'm gonna need a base plate before I go too much further, but I'm pretty happy with how it's going. Looking forwards to painting this one already too. He's about 6 inches tall. The pic he's based on is in here (http://Mr--Jack.deviantart.com/art/PILE-86864953), about halfway down on the right.

The angle the photo's on amplifies the over-the-top proportions a bit more than what they are but even so they're pretty dramatic.
Maybe one day I'll design something not ridiculously top-heavy.

(oh, and here's the 'sketch' that I based that demon on, if you're interested)

I love the demon:) The fact that its top heavy really works in its favour,It has a great realistic/cartoonish style to it. The hands and feet are superb as is the face. This will look very awesome when he's painted.

I like the new guy, I havent got much to say about him because its so early on, but I like the design and already you've got some nice edges to it:)

...With regards to "brushing down" your sculpt,I use turps and it just takes off any finger prints, fleks of clay and the likes, but just generally makes the whole thing look a bit smoother, great for veins and muscles, you would need a base to stand it on as once smoothed the sculpy surface seems to go a bit mushy, so you cant hold it.Just a quick dip with a brush is all it takes for quite a large area.manipulate the brush so you don't loose any detailing and voila! But anyways I highly recommend you use it as it just gives everything a smooth and professional look:)

Great stuff, cant wait to see more:)

What Bongsplat said;)

I usualy go over the entire sculpt with a soft brush and acetone to get the surface nice and smooth, then i add wrinkles and detail... If you look at my sculpts and compare Jason with Hellboy you can easily see that Jason hasīnt been brushed, but Hellboy is nice and smooth.
Thatīs what it does... it takes away the hard and sharp edges:)

Hmmm....this new design looks like a cross between the Martian Manhunter and the odd empty-eyed people from Kingdom of the Wicked.
Interesting. And the demon has inspired me to have a crack at something similar, since I too have done nothing in sculpture bar greenstuffing. This is Sculpey right? Where could I nick some?

That demon is damn sweet. Looks like he's a bit overinflated, but in this case it works.

Wow! The hardest and most important thing to do is get the gesture and "feeling" right and I think you have a heap of it right from the start. The finishings and the details will make it even better and I'm sure you will master them after an hour of practice. Hands are a great feature to give expression and I like that you seized that opportunity. At first glance the demon reminded me of a Shifflett sculpture. I would say that you have a bright future in sculpture, but since you are insanely good at everything else, I think you are already in the brightness . . . uh, does that make sense? . . . you know what I am trying to say I hope. Hehe.
