Your sketches feel a little constricted, perhaps try sketching with a pencil to loosen up the forms and allow yourself to experiment more. It seems as though when you are drawing with a pen, you are afraid to make a mistake or put a line out of place. With sketches, especially at first, it helps to be able to feel like you have the freedom to "mess up".
