View Full Version : Battle of the Sexes; Gentlemen's Topic Suggestions

Alright, my little stud muffins, you should know how this works...

Around the beginning of September, we are going to battle with the e-VILE females of the forum in interpreting a subject as an illustration. THEY are going to come up with the topic we have to do, and it will probably be something meant to inflect as much embarrassment and emotional pain on our poor psyches as possible, so let's keep the blubbering to a minimum.

In THIS thread, you MALE entrants will post as many suggestions as you can from which we will choose ONE for the ladies to do. Really think about this and forget the stereotypes--military themes, blood/guts/gore, and tattooed dicks WILL NOT SCARE these chicks. They have had us for breakfast twice already, and I for one, am tired of being sauteed and eaten.

Think. What inspires fear in the female artist subject-wise? What subject do you honestly think they'll have trouble interpreting just because they are female in the psychological sense? Then list it below, and we'll pick one of them to be the subject that the ladies have to execute.

What were the two topic choices guys gave to them that made us lose?

Ilaekae
August 7th, 2009, 07:47 PM
The first was a male "pin-up" calendar and we were supposed to depict males in a fashion that females would find attractive and sexy. The less said about that one, the better (One entry was a rather memorable close-up of a flaccid dick).

The first Battle of the sexes had "Loss of Innocence" as the topic for the males to do, and "Brotherhood" as the topic for the ladies. This one was a bit closer but we did get smeared anyway.

Domesticated housewife stereotype (like June Cleaver), serving and pampering her husband.

Ilaekae
August 7th, 2009, 07:57 PM
If I had to pick one thing that would make the average female's skin crawl...

Depict a young woman in her late teens to mid-twenties with absolutely no fashion sense, no make-up, no social sophistication, and absolutely nothing that makes her superficially attractive to the opposite sex. I don't mean ugly or deformed. I mean a total damn nerd with absolutely no clue. This is the blind date from hell, and even her own mother can't say, "But she has a nice personality..."

That actually sounds fun to draw though. I don't think a character is going to scare any of these girls off...

Not that I have any suggustons yet. I'll work on it though!

Zombie sex stars run rampant in _____(insert city of choice)

Tattoo session goes horribly wrong (no 56 stars tributes)

Male birthing experience (Take it as you will)

Female with shocking secret

Females, the weaker sex

Sisterhood of the Traveling Tampon

Females working for money

These are just some of the ones that I could think of off the top of my head. Feel free to modify at any time. I'll think of more soon.

ila how ummm horrible can this be? I mean i know that something many women fear is men. And I dont mean like boyfriend men...i mean like scumbags who would rape them type of men.

So perhaps a rape scene? I mean I would find that hard to depict....but being female...well that would really be hard to swallow.

Ugh...just thinking about that is pretty nasty. I would totally understand if this is crossing the line. If you want me to delete said suggestion I will.

We figured out last time through a thread like this one that it's better to do something challenging as an artist rather than just trying to attack gender. Stuff like rape, domestic abuse, etc is definitely a bad idea.

As much as we're taught the opposite, men and women aren't really THAT different. Gender roles are a part of every culture and vary respectively. However, most societies around the globe are patriarchal. Obviously this means that men hold the majority of power in most social institutions. There are honest biological justifications for some of it but really it's simply about power. Men were thrust into the lead back in the day because they were the sex that could work year-round, every year. Men could farm without taking unnecessary breaks. However in order for the species to survive, women had to take time away from gathering because of child bearing. This means that for 9 months, men were the soul providers. This gave men great power. Of course being stupid apes, men assumed they were just way more awesome than women.

Anyways, I think a good topic would be a play on power. Something where women could express being in power or being powerless. I don't really care for it being an easy topic, the whole idea is to see who the best is. If one group is truly superior than the other, topic should have very little effect on the outcome.

Sorry, I had to sneak in here to see what you all were planning.
But, in all seriousness, I kind of felt like I had to say something about this. Some of us gals may have had friends/family members/acquaintances who were actually raped, so having to depict a rape scene would kind of be crossing a line there.
Sorry to bomb your thread.......time to sneak back to the ladies' thread.

Have you ever seen the Life time network. They love to show women getting raped. Besides that's just too dark for a contest and I felt sick reading your post. I wouldn't want to see 50 highly detailed entries of rape scenes.

I'm not calling you a fucked up guy, but am saying that is a fucked up idea.

Not that im not all for any thing humorous and completly degrading, but id like to see some serious though about what the topic is if im gonna spend serious time on this piece and it be something i really pour alot of effort into i wanna see something id like having in a portfolio instead of lets say, Penis Castle or something, the same should apply to us gentlemen so lets see some great ideas.

Then again if their multiple rounds i see no reason for one serious topic and one degrading one :madchef:

Aside from...

"death penalty for possession of more than one pair of shoes"...which I think should be part of the US Constitution...

I totally agree with BuckWeisel. A "power"-oriented professional situation where the two genders have to be portrayed as absolute equals. No protective stereotypes, no secretaries/bosses thing, etc., no token situations, and it HAS TO LOOK NORMAL, and a not a fantasy/wish-fulfillment/forced situation. Perfectly normal, (and this is just to get across the "role-lessness" of the situation I'm trying to describe) like a unisex shower/locker room after work/sports/military action with absolutely no hint/feeling of "sex" other than the obvious physical gender differences.

This is hard to describe exactly, but I think you get the idea. I once had a girl living with me and we treated each other as total buddies, even though she was one of the sexiest chicks I knew when I was young. I'd haul her home after a drunk and toss her puke-stained ass in the tub, clean her up, and put her to bed just like I would a guy, and she did the same for me more than once. Our situation was so obvious to everyone that I even had a girl I was engaged to, and she had a girlfriend AND a boyfriend the entire time we lived together, all without any trouble from anyone.

This would make a great illustration pulled off well and would be just "touchy" enough to be hard to work on (right facial expressions, totally relaxed interaction, etc.,) for any artist.

ADD to Demo... I really didn't explain it well. We always have mismatched numbers on the sides, so to keep sheer numbers from winning, we vote once for THE OPPOSITE GENDER'S EFFORTS (males vote only for females, and vice versa), then the top five or six vote getters from each side are voted on AGAIN by both genders for a final overall winner.

Yeah the power theme is definately a great idea.

You should all remember the last time we were beaten by the girls! So please do not underestimate then. Also, Choosing a theme won't cripple their abilities to make kickass illustrations. However, we can choose a topic that is challenging AND fun to see executed.

Here are my suggestions:

1. metal
2. Good grief!
3. Conan the barbarian
4. Vanitas Stilllife
5. streetlife

I think something in the spirit of dogs playing poker would be tasteful and too complex for the females feeble mind.

Okay, people...we're gonna try to go to poll on the topics quickly (say, Tuesday night, if alesoun agrees) so we can get the topic set up and this thing started.

Make any prefs of any suggestions already made known NOW, or add in whatever you think might be an additional good suggestion. I'll put up a poll with the best possibilities from an artistic/challenge view and we'll all vote for 4-5 days to get the final topic.

Just got back from weekend excursions. And I totally understand about my suggestion. It is not something to be proud of...i was just thinking of as the topic stated something quite scary for the women to portray. And testing the line was necessary at least for me so that I can understand where we are truly going with this. I went to "fine" arts school for college so themes like that(S&M, rape, etc) were running rampant throughout the studios. My apologies to any ladies offended. Not my intention at all.

Alright, guys. We have 146 suggestions ranging from ridiculous to sublime, and I'd like to get it down to around forty or so by Tuesday afternoon so I can put up a poll for a final vote.

The one's that got more than one mention (including my own when I saw them but didn't post) have the additional "votes" after the item as a (•). (I did eliminate a few that were duplicating or didn't seem like they would be interesting enough for the chicks to attack.)

The best way to do this is just post your favorites, maybe four or five) from the above by listing just their numbers to make it easier for me to collate.

I really believe that we should hit them with something both EXTREMELY difficult for ANYBODY to do well and something that could make a nice portfolio piece, so please keep that in mind when you go through the list. If it scares you, it WILL scare them. If you'd be proud to show it, then it would be something that they'd really want to try.

I'm A bit late getting in on this, and doubt I'll be able to join the contest, but heres my 2 cents, for what its worth (probably less than 2 cents)

-A depiction of ancient female goddess cults as uncivilised, barbaric, and violent, with patriarchal religious influences (Norse/Germanic, Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian, Muslem) as a benevolent force; providing order and leading to a civilized society. (Frazetta-esque women in loin cloths sacrificing their own children on altars highly encouraged)

-A work which includes a self portrait of the female artist enjoying a meaningful relationship with this guy (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Dick_Masterson).

-A side by side comparison of the greatest creative/inventive acheivement made/thought up by a man next to the same made/thought up by a woman. (It has to be a product of the mind: natural processes of the body do not count)

-Display female circumscision as a good thing... on second thought, please don't.

-A show of masculinity so impressive that it even turns lesbians straight.

Thats all I've got fow now.

Though i do think that skeletons are anything but boring.

While I understand your objection and agree 100% with the thought behind it, the things that I listed were specifically listed because I thought they would on some level or another be something that women absolutely would want nothing to do with. To quote you yourself: "Potent symbols of the oppression of women" ...what better to use in something called "the battle of the sexes." I mean, isn't part of the point to come up with something that the opposite sex would have trouble drawing? That specifically was one of the most disgusting disturbing things that I could think of (your responce alone validates this point)... so much so that I decided to negate the suggestion because I did not want it to be taken literally and end up finding myself viewing picture after picture of mangled vaginas. (Plus, it was something I realised most of us would have trouble with, regardless of sex/gender.)

However I left it up because I still figured it would be something that if pulled off would be a whole new level of shock value that the whole "smear poop on the virgin mary" crowd could only dream of. The artwork in and of itself would in no way actually hurt someone, and if anything, though it would "display female circumscision as a good thing" it would draw attention to the issue, and no matter how it displays the subject I doubt that any attention drawn to female genital disfiguration would be condoning the practice.

Posts and suggestions like these were exactly the reason why I stayed out of the last TD too. Coming up with a difficult topic for the female half of CA is not being done by giving them something that will surely insult them, I think. You are writing stuff like this in public, please be aware of that.

This TD is supposed to be fun for everyone. Hard to do, yes, but fun. Your suggestions are rather gross and definately NOT fun to do -unless you actually want to create shocking and vulgar art, which most people usually don't. I'd go so far as to say that your suggestions border on racism against the female half of humanity and/or lesbians.

Peter: I think you've missed the whole point of the contest. :/ As everyone has been saying, over and over, the object *is not* to disgust us, or to give us something that we would hate drawing (and in that case probably hate ourselves for drawing it). The point is to come up with a topic that is challenging and fun, not insulting and disgusting. Why would we bother playing if that's the spirit behind it?

You are writing stuff like this in public, please be aware of that.

I think you are misreading the intent here: It is not my intent to insult women but to see how they would handle a subject that requires them to insult themselves. The ideas are out there, somewhere, and in this case I just collected them expecting that they WOULD be difficult in that working with them would require the artist to get past any of their own moral hangups to create the art. To a certain extent women already have to do this if they are going to work in an industry that often objectifies the female form and marginalizes their significance with confining female characters to roles such as "scantilly clad Amazon" and "seductive sorceress." Therefore seeing as I expect that the women of this forum would already be conditioned to handle this and I would expect nothing less of them in challenging us I figured that ramping up the gutwrenching disgustingness of the possibilities would be neccesary.

Anyone who thinks that I particularly advocate any of those options that I listed as the way society should act or view women needs to have their head examined.

It is not my intent to insult women but to see how they would handle a subject that requires them to insult themselves.

Promoting them as topics for the challenge is still promoting them, and still just as insulting. Perpetuating ideas because they are "out there" keeps them "out there" rather than doing something positive to make a CHANGE of perception. So yeah, it sure does sound like you don't have a very high opinion of women, Peter. And to be frank, it also makes you sound like an ass.

If this is the spirit of this competition, to be required to insult myself and belittle women in the process, I REFUSE. I'm out.

ila how ummm horrible can this be? I mean i know that something many women fear is men. And I dont mean like boyfriend men...i mean like scumbags who would rape them type of men.

So perhaps a rape scene? I mean I would find that hard to depict....but being female...well that would really be hard to swallow.

Ugh...just thinking about that is pretty nasty. I would totally understand if this is crossing the line. If you want me to delete said suggestion I will.

This VERY much crosses a line, and is NOT something to be made light of. Suggesting it was in poor taste.

The object of this contest is to "think out of the box" by being challenged to handle topics that will stretch us artistically.

We still want to produce art that won't make people lose their lunch. There is an opportunity here to produce pieces that anyone would be happy to show in their portfolios, especially since each gender is suggesting topics that the other might find hard to express and might not normally tackle.

Topics should stretch us artistically, not make us want to throw up. I actually doubt that anyone would vote for a topic that would outrage either sex, so I don't see the point of suggesting one, do you? really?

I liked the one with drawing a total nerd with no sense for looks..
but its too simple yet..

which is why I propose; A self portrait, Full body, in a scene (don't know which yet) in wich THEY HAVE NO FASHION SENSE, A self portrait of themselves as COMPLETE nerds and in some kind of situation that I can't think of.. Auditioning for top model?

I want them to find and Bring out their biggest flaws.. if they dare ;)
eg. Have a big nose? Let us see just HOW big~

I know all women are conscious about their looks, sometimes it stretches further than just their clothes and hair.

I am in no way trying to be mean, simply 'thinking outside the box'.

Why not just say "Unflattering self portrait" or "Your biggest flaw" then? A lot of these suggestions are way too specific - stuff that sounds more like a book or song title leave a lot more room to not have a pile of the same single painting over and over.

And yeah about all these topics that are either thinly-veiled insults to women in general or are outright hateful or offensive... Taking a sharper jab in your shit talking can be funny, but things like "Women working for money" shouldn't even be in your poll - wtf, guys. That's not a topic, it's a sexist insult. Funny in conversation, yes, but if something like that gets voted as a topic I'm out too. I'm not even going to discuss the more vulgar or shocking shit. Take a look at the list the girls have compiled, do you see anything insulting or offensive to men in there? If the other side could try to approach the idea with the same amount of respect that'd be nice.

We're trying to make the topic cool and fun for you - show us the same courtesy.

Ladies, don't take this brainstorming thread too seriously. If the topic that is voted by the men disturbs you in some way or another, then please, protest when it happens. But doing so right now, it's kinda silly. You know how us guys aren't as sensitive as you when it comes to disgusting subjects (gore, violence, etc), that's just the way guys are. You know how us guys aren't as sensitive as you when it comes to disgusting subjects (gore, violence, etc),

Calling us womenfolk "sensitive" plays a bit into the stereotype a little. I'm just sayin. I happen to like gore and violence! (sorry, Gringo, not aimed at you anymore, the rest of this is aimed at Peter and a few others who made suggestions) If anything, I'm sensitive to portrayals of violence against women because it is something I live with every day. I have several friends who have been raped or were victims of male-on-female violence and I can't think of anything more disgusting than having to depict something like that for this contest.

I was hoping to get a portfolio piece out of this and I just want to reiterate what Nonie and some others have said about open, somewhat nebulous topics having the most potential. That said, some of these topic suggestions are really awesome (the power play idea sounds particularly kickass!) and I can't wait to see what you guys finally come up with!

After careful deliberations, I have narrowed my choices down to five of which I think would be challenging and fun to do.
***************************************
13. Death metal band (or Album cover for...).

50. All seven of the three stooges

51. A movie-style poster (think like Drew Struzan style) of the manliest movie that has ever existed---giant bosoms, chainsaws, blood and vikings (with the optional pirate or ancient jungle relic) thrown in for good measure. •

107. Armed to the Teeth

126. Deep Space Hot Rod

I pondered this one, "Male birthing experience", but felt this might be very difficult to portray, however, I was reminded of a certain Native American tribe where they had this strange custom. When the woman is about to have her baby, the father would lie down above her in a bunk-style bed. Strings were attached to his testicles, so the lady could tug at them every time she experienced pain...that way the father could share in the pain of the birthing experience. Needless to say, that tribe went extinct quickly as most couples could only have one child....

I leave to get some important things taken care of for a few hours and all fuckin' hell breaks loose!

Both sides--alesoun and I are running this thing and we won't let anything thoroughly stupid get in as a topic on either side. That should be obvious common sense. The idea is to have fun, and more importantly, to get a decent USABLE piece of art out of all the time we put in to the challenge.

Yes, some of the suggestions are stupid and sexist. That's what happens when you mention sex in a bunch of males with the emotional sophistication of a wombat. We simply assume most are meant to get a quick laugh, and have no real hope of getting to the top. As for the two posts I had a lot of trouble with, Tetsuo knew immediately he went over the top and apologized immediately. We all make mistakes. We move on.

Peter, YOU I do NOT understand. After all the discussion of fun and possible sample use in all these threads, you open your shithole and out comes something that gags even me, and I have an extremely high tolerance for gross useless and insulting shit. That doesn't mean I like it, or agree with it, but that I recognize it as soon as I see it, and your bonehead suggestions crossed THAT line by a good bit. I fucking wish you would THINK--ACTUALLY THINK--for .0005 seconds before you "open your mouth."

On behalf of alesoun and I, and all the people who are out there seriously supporting the efforts here and in other challenges around the forum, I apologize for any insult or just plain simple shit tossed into the air that offended anyone anywhere through these threads. Most of us are adults. Many are not, but have learned how to act as adults. And some were just born with their head up their asses and will never realize it has to be removed before anything decent can come out of their mouth.

Again, everybody...my apologies.

Now let's get this back on track with the usual insulting and childish behavior that such serious endeavors require...

I'm wid you. Puddy Tat! I know that most of the ladies will recognise that almost all of the males here would have way too much respect for themselves and the ladies to give more than a second "wtf" to posts like that.

Wow, seems like the ladies are winning already... I mean, come on!

Some of you are missing the point. Our topic should challenge the ladies to produce AWESOME art, not something crappy. I'd rather have my male butt kicked again, than winning against a pile of shit. Lets find something, that will bring the best auf of the ladies, like Nonie's "turnip murder" last time.

I think the men didn't lose last time, I think that we won by seeing all those great pictures that the ladies did. But I think we will lose now, if we give them a topic, which they simply can't turn into something good.

So what makes a great picture/topic? I think, a piece of art, that evokes some kind of emotion is always a good one. But evoking emotions is really hard. So that should be a challenge to the women. Hard but with great potential outcome. I think I know some ladies around here that are able to pull it off...

My choices of the list are:
18. Losing
19. A Great Day to Die
21. Self-Sacrifice
27. On the edge
75. Escape
114. Three Wishes

I personally think that this whole topic suggestion thread should have been in a private forum like we did with the pinup calendar. That way the trash could have been dealt with in a more civilized manner than a giant flame fest on who is what and how everyone thinks. Things like that on the internet are just recipes for the usual forum disaster.

Also, having private topic suggestions would help keep the *cough* spies *cough* out so when we really let em have it with the topic it would be that more shocking (and no i mean fun shocking not electricity shocking).

No teams other than "Boys" and Girls"--it's a knock down free-for-all with any weapons at hand. We don't even care about the sides being even. We'll take care of that later in the polling. Each team will vote on the opposite team's work, and the top 5-6 from each team moves on the final poll where both sides vote to determine the "winner". So it doesn't matter how many is on each side. At least that's how it worked last time (check the Challenge forum if you want to see the threads) and I presume it will work that way again or similar this time.
