some really inspirational sp studies in this part of the forum :). so i think im going to start my own and get myself in gear.
here's a sp sketch. not at great start but need to work on pencil techniques alot. :/

your drawings have a nice "worked" feeling to them. seems your not afraid to make broad, quick statements. maybe work with graphite and don't be afraid to erase out and blend a bit, maybe spend more time. this will force you to look more and get used to the mirror. good stuff so far, keep it up =)

thanks virus! that's some good points you brought up. i think i will try spending a little more time on them and try and develop stuff abit more. :)

this time i had ago at digital one. i should have really sketch this before painting. instead i rushed into colour and form so quickly on this. everything got so distorted in this method. also i forgot to set colour proof before i started so some of the dark tones have gone now. :(

jigje you got to give oils ago! the blenders are awesome and the colours are alot warmer than other paints like acrylic can archive. i will work into abit more when i get some more stuff :)

Man, I loved the colours in the green one, that's thinking outside the circle! The pen is awesome Alex. I got no crits man, I love the way the hair is just emerging from the page and the proportions are excellent. I wanna do pen now, there is something about it. :)

WOW I love the crosshatching on the pen piece, try using that in your pencil portraits so that they look cleaner. I agree with Jigje about the hair emerging from the page, great effect.

Haha, that's cool, I feel your pain with the straight down portrait... oh god I can still feel it in my neck, even after two months :P. Not really but yea it hurts, you actually achieved the feelin that you are looking down at the viewer from above though, which is pretty cool so kudos.

I would recommend not to use those fancy brushes and things more often then not, as they are hurting your ability to draw and paint better. If you focus more on the technical drawing and painting aspect (again, I'm not saying EVERY time, just more often then not) you will improve alot faster. It's cool to play around, and finish some of them in ways you want to finish, but if you really want to improve, you will be best served to take your time and do some academic studies with a few of these. You will be amazed how much of a difference it will make in your progress. Keep up the good work!!

You're getting better! I recommend spending a significant amount of time on a self portrait though... I learn a LOT more when I spend at least 1.5-2 hours on a SP rather than 20-40 minutes, where it sometimes feels like I'm not really learning much. Of course it's not always feasible to spend that much time on a SP every day, so you should just pick a day to set aside and spend a few hours really nailing down the forms of your face, and correcting what you can until it's as perfect as you can make it. I guarantee you'll be surprised by the results.

Other than that, the last self portrait (27/11/09) is AWESOME. So cool to pull out the light shapes rather than the shadow shapes.

that last one is great besides one thing- when you go from that angle, the structure of the nose doesn't look quite right. really think about the structure of the features while you look in the mirror. =)
your pencil work is getting better, but your digital stuff is really starting to take off =) great

The first post of your last 3 is really interesting.
I like the bold lines that seem to interconnect.
you seem to get real dark in the values in the other ones
but I see that you can tell the structure of your face pretty well.
Try putting more light on your face to pull out the features.

A great set, the new years piece makes me so dizzy though, haven't had a chance to look through them all yet but im likging alot that ive seen so far. I'd love to see another piece in the style of August 9th though, as I quite like the mechnical style of the broke strokes in that one, I also like 210 for its simplicity yet effectiveness. Keep it up!!

Another good set, especially the digital painting. With ur digi one do you set out the outlines first or just build the form through tone? Also I like the whole loose brush stroke thing going on like in 217 with the skull in the corner. Oh and 216 kind reminds me of "a***face" from preacher (no offense) :)

thanks man! :D yeh when i do a quick sketch then start throwing down tone. helps keep things a little more accurate for me. and no offence none taken about that 216 man. i just been have alot of bad days and thought it would be a visual way to show how mucked up my mind is atm. :/
i do feel everything should get better now so shouldn't looks so disturbed in sps as much. :)

Got a new apple monitor for my macbook recently. so really nice to paint with but alittle different.
