Hey everyone. This is my first time posting here. I used to be a pretty avid lurker and poster but Real Life™ took over for a while. Anyway enough of my boring life story.. here's some art. It's a project for fun right now. Possibly expanded in the future. Follow links for higher rez images. I hope you like!

AHAHAHAHAHAHA! 'Maybe next time, Gumby,' lol

These are really great! I can't really see much to comment on, your panel layout is interesting and flows well, and everything reads very clearly.

I remember some other comic pages you posted awhile back, these seem to be a big improvement.

Oh haha I just noticed that at the top of the last page, she was using her hand like a muppeteer on his head, thats really funny.

Fllexelf I have seen your comic stuff for long time since you were doing star wars ..etc etc Your superior at it and this is really good so far the story is good and it goes without saying that the art is fantastic !! The character design is really good also it's not easy to make interesting characters . I have been fallowing some online comics lately like www.megatokyo.com and some of them have huggggeee audiences ..10's of thousands of fans . Though none of them have the quality of say a comic like this ! I wish more people with your talent would put out a web comic so I would finally have something of quality to fallow ! Just something to think about ...:D

edit: Is this all done in the computer or do you do line art and then scan and paint ??

Loga4 - Thanks man I appreciate it :)

Lost Dragon - I'm workin' on Page 4 right now actually, I'm glad you seem to like it. :)

pogonip - Thanks pogo, that makes it all worth it to hear what you're telling me. For this one I actually drew the lineart by hand with ballpoint bic pen and then color it 100% in photoshop. Page 1 however was done partially in Painter. But I think I'm goin' with photoshop. Page 1 was a bit too rendery IMO

Joshua - Haha you saw The Bendster :)

darkcult - Thank you! Yeah I'm working on more :)

Wednesday - Thank you very much!

Nimrod - I'm glad you see improvement. That's my #1 goal and it makes me happy to have you say that. Thank you :)

Wow there is some really great stuff here! Must admit I haven't seen your stuff in years (if you are the same flexible elf I'm thinkin' of). My comments are more minor considerations so please take them that way.

I really like the feel to the first page, you mentioned that it was painter and I think it works when the line work isn't strong - particularly in the 1st 3 panels of the 1st page. I don't think it works well on the last panel of that page due to the line work. On the first page, the flow between the 3rd and 4th panels feels strange. You build up to something in the first 3 but then cut straight into an interior and it isn't clear how the first 4 panels relate to one another other than the text.

2nd page is really good and not much I can really say about it. At a second glance I saw bender in the background which is a nice subtle touch!

With the 3rd page, it really becomes obvious that the page is not inked and I'm not sure that it works. In the previous pages it wasn't as obvious and didn't take away from what was going on. Here I think it does a little cause it feels a little more rushed and not as polished. A really good flow to it and the smart arse remarks really add to the piece. I'm not convinced about her facial expression in the whole body shot - just seems rather indifferent and not really working. There is also something a little strange happenin' with her right arm, particularly around the elbow.

Again small things which you may or may not agree with.

Wacom Knight - Thanks! :)

Grifter730 - I'm glad you like :) The vote seemes to be pretty split on the pencilly rendering style.

Matt - I'm probably the same one :) Thanks for taking the time to do those crits. I really see what you mean about page one in hopping to that interior.. I should have had an over the shoulder shot into the interior of the place for better flow bigtime.. I'm not entirely thrilled with Page 1 as a whole. It was using an old technique that I had done with my Star Wars comic. As for Page 3 yeah her expression is a bit non-chalant. It kinda goes with her character but it was mostly because I wanted to give her a real sexy 'come hither' sort've expression since it's the first time you see her. The elbow is a bit over-rendered I think and I didn't clean it up much. I have to be careful with those areas now that I'm not making tones first and I would lose trouble linework along the way.
Thanks much!

lookiiiiing GOOD!

only comment i have (if im entitled to one) is that her presentation of herself together with the guys comments kinda gets the feel of a hentai going...

granted, i might have read one too many of those god-forsaken, dirty dirty things... but still... might wanna tone down the blunt sexuall references ^_^

Flexible Elf
January 12th, 2004, 12:36 PM
Mac - Hey thanks. Yeah I see what you mean. it;s more meant to be just verbal groping at her because she's in the middle of a real seedy bar, but I can definitely see it being the preamble to something hentai. My comic's definitely not going to be Hentai. There _may_ be nudity (depending on what my web account will allow) and a little eroticism but I definitely draw the line at porn. Most likely it's gonna be in the R/PG13 range

The Swift - Thank you :)

gene - Haha yeah those GI Joes are way too funny. Thanks much.

Quick question Elf, how big were the papers that those pages were drawn on? If they were 11x17, how did you go about scanning them in?

That first page has one baddass backstory in it.

well done, look foward to seeing more :)

Usually I don't like most comics... the writings are bad, the angles are overused, the drawing is uninspired, but wow, your comic caught me from the first line, even if it was for 3 panels only, i want MORE, and I love it! Great writing, awesome perspectives, and the drawing is amazing.

That stuff kicks ass! More more!

Keep it up

ProudestMonkey - Thanks! The writing is usually what I'm worried about most. I used to try to cram way too much in a page and it seemed wierd but it makes me immensely happy that you like it. More to come :)

tyboogie - Hehe thanks yeah I wanted this comic to more fit my personality. I've tried way too many dark and brooding things in the past, as have a lot of other people. I think it's gonna be pretty silly along the way. Yeah the pork chop sandwiches is from the GI Joe thing. God I love those. I nearly wet myself the first time I saw them. Thanks again :)

alti - Thanks!! Working on Page 4 right now :)

Grifter - It actually was varying methods for the first three pages to try to get a feel for what I wanted to do.
Page 1 was scanned ballpoint pen off of a 8.5x11" sheet and then colored in Painter, a little bit in Photoshop and then lettered in Illustrator.
For Page 2 I just made a thumbnail rough and scanned it in. I finished it using a gray toned 'Medium felt tip pen" in Painter and then I colored it 100% in Photoshop. Lettered in Illustrator.
Page3 was ballpoint pen on 8.5x11" again and colored in Photoshop. Same Letter in Illustrator.
Since it's all for fun I wanted to experiment a bit, but what I think I'm gonna do most likely is the method for Page2. It seems to have been the tightest of them all. But we'll see :)

That's good stuff man. Are you using a tablet where it's also a monitor? Because I have a real problem drawing tightly on my Wacom, maybe because I'm just not used to it I guess.

Have you thought about submitting your work to Image or Dark Horse comics or anything? It's much better than the crap that I see out there nowadays, with a few exceptions. Are you planning to do more pages? How long did it take you to do each page roughly?

Flexible Elf
January 18th, 2004, 04:44 PM
Grifter - No I can't afford that thing. Once you get the tool set the way you like and get used to the tablet, drawing tightly with it is just as easy as by hand. I am actually working on submissions but I am also considering shopping this one. I'm planning to finish one whole 22 page book at the very least for this one. For the Star Wars comic it took me about 5 hours a page. This time around it's about 10 hours a page.

amphex - Thanks! When you get something done I'd love to see it :)

If I see one more elf-ear I'm gonna commit suicide. :p
And I didn't like the censored dialogue. The sexual comments in #3 were a bit over the top.

Other than that it's top notch! Drawings are great, and so is the overall mood.

Can't really comment much on the story (need to see more first), but the writing is very good. I think you shouldn't rush story elements too much. I'm referring to that very last panel. I think you should set up your characters a bit more first. But that's just me. :D

Keep up the good work! I'd love to see more.

This is seriously great shit. Great art/color, amusing dialog, good sci-fi setting. It's also very easy to follow (I hate comics where you have to spend an hour on one panel just trying to figure out the order the actions are happening in). I'm looking forward to seeing more. I'd love to see this in print, as it's probably something I'd enjoy reading in a book format.

I agree that the censored dialogue has to go. Especially if you're considering a PG13/R rating.

This reminds me of a little bit of Azpiris Lorna and her Robot stuff for some reason (although obviously much less risque.) But sort of sexy sci-fi, rich colors, amusing dialogue.

Flexible Elf

fukifino - Hey thanks :) I've been wrestling with What kinda rating I wanna put on it. I think I only bleeped out 'fuck' but I guess I did keep it a bit tame. I originally saw an R-rated almost Heavy Metal comic when I started, but I wanna keep it somewhat classy and not too trashy. At least with this comic.

Payback - Haha yeah elf ears. She's actually a character I've had since highschool, when elf ears were still a novelty :) I redesigned her a million times but kept comin' back to 'em.
Like I was saying to fukifino, I've been wrestling with What kinda rating I wanna put on it.
I'm definitely going to be letting the exposition flow here in the next 3 pages, hopefully at a less than hectic pace :). Thanks much!!
