Coro and I are going to do something special for you all this coming Sunday as he and I join up to cover the single most important aspect of image creation. We will be covering composition for Illustration, Narrative, Fine Art, Storyboarding, Marketing Art and more...

Topics to be covered:

The Principles of Design.
The Illusion of Space and Improved Image Depth.
Composition for Visual Storytelling
Linear Design and Visual Flow
Tonal Pattern and
Abstraction
Mood and Feeling
A Crash Course in Composition History

We will be covering many aspects of improved image creation which can be utilized regardless of style or industry to better your skills. This is very very practical stuff and you will leave the class with theories and ideas which will immediately improve your work and your awareness of how you create pictures with purpose.

When: This Sunday! 1-5pm CDT
Where: Right here on ConceptArt.Org (forum coming!)
Why: Because you want to improve your ability to create believable and deep images containing emotional depth, mood, and content. And because we want to help support CA and it's new technology goals (in progress!!)
How much? 95 USD. http://www.conceptartstore.com/artofco.html

More info to come!!! I gave a teaser when we did the color theory class and it covered only the most basic part...we are going to cover the entire spectrum of composition, value storytelling, and share ideas which help you have greater emotional impact in your works.

Join us for art, and in depth conversation on Composition. I consider this to be my best class and having Coro there with me, will make it an experience worth hearing and seeing. I have four hours of material prepared and we will be answering all your questions...at least as many as we possibly can!!

Hope you all will enjoy the class. I had planned on running it as a download but it is a topic that I have realized is much better served when I can answer technical questions and share the info with you all. Coro and I have been studying composition since the mid 90's and there is a TON of info which will be given to you.

Can't wait to see you all. Really. The questions so far have really pushed me to better communicate these ideas which have been refined down to the very core of what it takes to be successful in image making. Coro's knowledge of image creation and process is top notch.

As usual, with these courses, CA's proceeds are going to the suport the continued building of all the new technology for you all to enjoy. Thank you so much for the support...We will do all we can to help around

Really. thank you. Just got working with Jackie Oh and Randis on some new layouts for the site and the features list is thick and really the whole thing is beginning to lo looking thick. Going to keep at it til it is all done!!

Does this mean there isn't gonna be the downloadable content on composition?
I can't seem to find that thread anymore either.

This sounds pretty interesting though.

EDIT: opps nevermind just read Jason's post over again heheh
EDIT 2: Jason is there a minimum recommended bandwidth speed to stream the lessons smoothly?

Pitty im gone for the weekend. But I might just pay for the on demand, but will it have the entire class? Or will the beginning be missing like on the colourclass? (btw, that wasn't in a negative tone. Just wondering)

Btw, what is this 30days I'm hearing about. Does the on demand only last 30 days? SNAPP I better watch both the last classes once more to get it in reaaaaal good :)

I actually prefer this to a download (Not to say a download would be sweet), having the chance to interact with Jason and ask questions as well as clarifications is immensively valuable-

I will definately be there on sunday.

If we need to, we will run it twice...will see how the interest is.

Thanks for the comments. The colour theory should not have a missing part. I will discuss with Davi and get that resolved. Since there are some issues with the first two classes due to the switch over to the new ten channel plan, we will keep the course up another few days. Thanks for letting me know. If anyone has further issues please reach me directly via PM.

I am going to be taking questions from those who cannot make the class until it hits on demand. I will make a thread for those folks so they can get all their questions answered. cool?

I am going to make an additional recording of those questions to add to the on demand library. I think that should help too.

Doing all I can. Trying my best...still working out the kinks but it is all coming together.

Sucks that the download won't be happening... I would have saved my money from the last class for this if I'd known about it. Is there any chance of getting notice of topics a few classes in advance so we can budget for the ones we really want?

Hey Jason... would it be possible to offer these at lower prices with a one-time-only viewing option?
I understand you've got costs to cover, but purely from my perspective I'll be going bankrupt! :P

Although I would've loved a cheaper option I'll say I'm still super excited about this, I've been looking forward to it. I definitely thought that the color class was well worth the money despite some hiccups with the technology.
I'm in agreement with the thought that eventually it'd be nice if there was a schedule of upcoming classes so people could save up and prioritize. I know you guys are getting things worked out, so I'm not complaining, just thought I'd raise my virtual hand in agreement with that sentiment.

Anyway, thanks again for all the work you do, it's much appreciated. : D

Queue lazy writing skills,

Guys i've spent $200 on downloads and now $200 on classes. a few downloads i would get my money back on if i could and needed the money enough, but these lessons are worth everything and more.

in fact i feel asif im betraying myself writing this, the less people who know this info the better, because really, no one knows it like jason

I actually can make this class due to this. not saying everyone would feel this way but im enjoying that the change allows for me to participate.
The class time table for where i am is 2am to 6am Monday 10th of August 2009-dont have a problem there either really.

Does the code you get work on more than one computer? Just because I tend to live in two different places, with two different connections and different computers avaliable to use them. I'm really not sure about the wi-fi connection which would be Sunday night (as it's 6PM-11PM here), and I would like to be able to check stuff on the wired in broadband later in the week.

Something that Liffey mentioned that I agree would be helpful - if we could get the topics of a few classes in advance. Having just paid my tax bill, I'm kinda broke this month, and it'd be good to be able to pick which seminars were of the most value to me, as I'm pretty sure I can't afford them all.

I know Jason and co are just in the early stages of figuring this out though, so I appreciate this might not be possible yet.

Definitely agree... A week's notice isn't enough for some of us to pull together $100 by a long shot.

I was hoping for a download too. Have been refreshing the download section a lot and when it disappeared from there I was really bummed. Don't mind streaming really but it is the time that might be difficult :(

Will it be possible to pay to stream in all it's entirety at a later date?

There's no way I'll be able to watch it streaming, we're 12 hours ahead of the States because of timezone, pretty much the same for most of Europe.

The reality is my comp download vid files were corrupted and we have been unable to get it to render out due to problems caused by both a bug with mac/adobe and a full operating system failure that we first thought was a hardware failure. I have spent four weeks on that video, days, nights, weekends. The only way for me to do it again at this point is to completely start from scratch. I wanted that vid out weeks ago...but I am stuck here...we have tried rendering in small bits, we have tried reediting and rendering...both the source files and the project were damaged and so the option for me at this point is to teach it live...and to do so in a way that is better than what I had to offer with the download.

My way of helping make up for that was adding coro to the mix so we can include another extremely experienced viewpoint and provide even more information than I would have been able to on my own. The both of us doing this together is valuable and offers improvement to the program.

As said, if I had my way it would have already been out. I would not have said it was out unless I believed it was going to work out. I announced when we started rendering the final, as always, and then got hit with the problems and that in turn led to thinking it was solved and then more software/hardware/file issues. It is a loss to me, in time, in effort, and financially. I would have had another download out which would help this community and now I do not. I had to pay to get it made too. It is a loss. The best I can do is to make up for it with a better program than I had before...and this class is going to be exactly that.

I'd honestly be glad to pay the 90 bucks, even if only to view this live session. It's just a matter of timing. I wonder why THIS class couldn't be provided to view as a download at a later time? I understand that you must have your reasons, Jason, I am just curious.

Studio Colrouphobia
August 5th, 2009, 02:07 AM
Thank you for explaining Jason, unfortunately this mean I wont be able to get this (very important) knowledge. I do not have 95 bucks to spare. I know people scream at that with the notion: if you wish to improve you CAN spend the cash, but the reality is that 20, maybe even 50 bucks I could have spent, but 95 means my children do not have food...

So I am hoping that there will be an alternative along the road- alternatively that I will get lucky and be able to save up for a future class..

Jason Manley

CA editors are already working hard on the next round of downloads including Andrew Jones Fine Art part two, Donato Giancola's, and another Zhanglu.

Right now CA does not have the editing bandwidth, and I do not have another week to re-record...it is either I do it streaming style or the other option is to not do it at all, given the circumstances...the latter would put it in the back of the download line that is already in production...which means another year out before it can be taught The goal is to take what I have and to add coro and all his considerable skills and knowledge to the mix. This will be a better course because of that.

I have taken the liberty of cleaning up this thread. Please, keep the discussion on the class. I am hopeful for the understanding. If you want to send me a PM on your questions, I will try to answer them.

Regarding the schedule..yes we are looking at that now...expect there will be great demos and lectures, live, every weekend for the next few months. We have much to do.

Best,

Jason

Just wanted to throw in an opinion here. Drawing is a rather affordable thing to do if you compare it to being in a band, recording music, tuning cars, riding horses or traveling the world. I don't know how often i've heard people complain about the cost of a lifedrawing class. If you're serious about your art, put away extra money. I don't make much, but when i do, i make sure to keep an overhead to spend on art materials and courses. If you, like me, miss this opportunity, take it as a reminder of one of the most overlooked ways of improving your art ... being able to afford it.

Jason Manley

Is there anyway to find out if the class will run well on my internet connection? i am aware there was a test version prior to the colour theory and Australian reveiws of the connection were not too stellar- that could have been, i supose during the playback though.

My parents are concerned that the streaming will cut out and not work, i would need them assurred before i can participate in the class.

I myself am confident it will work well enough.

If I am right the server of Livestream should be located there.

If your download is good enough, the live stream should work just fine. I have a 6.06MB/s download now, with a lot of other internet stuff open. I think if you're able to hit at least 4.5 MB/s, you should be fine.

All I say about these live streams is it brings live workshops you would probably watch at events like Reverie to those who wouldn't have a dream to watch. I live a few thousand miles away from these places and would cost me over a grand to go to these. I'm having a great bargain watching these live streams. Sure the atmosphere and chance to meet potential employers is not there, but the chance to meet other artists and the chance to watch it again via the forums is. And the info shared is mind blowing. Beats any downloads. I'm glad this was made live stream.

Perfect! At first I thought 'whoa, expensive', especially since I've just come back from vacation. But then again, hell, I pay a lot more for college and I wouldn't even dream of them touching this stuff in class, let alone as in-depth as I expect this to be. I haven't gotten any of the downloads so far, since I considered many of them a bit too 'specific', at least for someone in my stage of learning, but this is possibly the single most important fundamental for any visual artist. Fortunately, time and finances are on my side, so this promises to be a great opportunity. See you on Sunday!

Composition is my least taught subject in art as everyone tends to just go "WELL, GOOD COMPOSITION IS SOMETHING YOU JUST FEEL..." or something incredibly formulaic that I can't seem to apply correctly. I'm banking 100 dollars that my dark ages of bad compositions will end (or at least be alleviated), as I did for colour theory.

my speedtest.net result is only 1.64 (asia's average 4.2, global average 5.47), but from the free preview live class (i think it was for composition) that i've attended from jason, it was acceptable, save maybe a few seconds of lag in every 10 to 15 minutes interval. but nothing that you cant fill in the blanks with if you've been following the rational, logic or strain of thoughts of the "lecturer", so i guess there's no stopping you (no tech excuse) if you internet connection is not working at the preferred 4!

edit: for vista user outside of the states, can add an additional clock using the gadget menu and find central time or CDT time zone!

edit1: for cash strap members, what about the idea of pooling? 2 to 3 guys getting together at a local cafe that offer wifi?? not sure if this is allow considering the spirit of the course seems to be getting financial support for the CA site while advocating a more accessible and widespread sharing of art experience and info? the idea is sharing, hope i'm not giving ideas for someone to put up a class and "extort" out of jason and CA's effort... damn! the boon and curse of technology.

Go to livestream.com and click around on the videos...if you click the ones that stream about livestreams service those are in HD and will show u what to expect. I run a bit smaller than HD to help be sure we keep it running smoothly but that should show u.

j

Do you mean the ones that are in this link? http://www.livestream.com/procaster/video

I'm living in Japan, but I'm in vacations so no problem waking up at 2AM, just worried about the smoothness of streaming...

There isn't a possibility of upload a small test video from CA so everyone can test the connection?

The Live classes will not be sold as downloads. They are raw and unedited and the straight dope. I prefer to not risk them to the main stream torrents I am neck deep in the new technology upgrades and the online school, so I can't take the time right now even though I want to. The school schedule is more important than my download.

Regarding the not having the money...95 bucks? If you want it you will get it. It pissed me off to no end to be told that if I couldnt afford art school I didn't deserve it. I felt like art had been hijacked by the rich. That education cost me over 100k usd. 95 bucks I could do. 100k I couldn't. If you really want it you will find a way. Your path will be far easier than mine...that much I can guarantee. The next-gen atelier already proves that..as do the other things we have here for teaching and helping.

The reason these downloads and classes are cheap is because we did not think anyone should have to spend 100k to learn art....(ca's prices for educational content are still of the cheapest out there and most of what we can offer can't be found elsewhere as it is here). We will not be giving up on the downloads. We purposely priced these downloads cheap. The live classes are no different in that motivation.

So I hope you can make it.

I think that

These lessons are a great idea.

I'd prefer to watch this live, and I am ready to pay right now, espacially this on on composition, it's the thing I have the most interest in right now, the only problem is that the time it's on I have to catch some Z's because 3 hours later it's work time for us here. Wouldn't a Saturday to Sunday thing be more convenient for most people?

In any case, damn mondays, I really wanted to attend this particular lecture.

If you do not get your password please follow these steps after checking your spam box and checking the .txt file with your confirmation email:

1. After you pay and get your order confirmation, you need to click the link to check the status, and then scroll to the bottom.
2. There is a box to enter your "Card or Account Number" that you used to pay for the class. Enter your card or account number info and click "Apply". ***NOTE: If you paid with Paypal rather than a credit card, then it asks you for your E-mail address instead.***
3. When the page reloads after clicking apply, there will be a blue "Download" button that appears under the class name (in the top right "Your Order" box of your order's summary).
4. Click the download button to get the password for the class.

That should do it.

Somehow you manage to do things on the days when I am not at home.

I would love to see a downloadable version or a DVD(Set?) about the two big classes.

I dont have internetbanking or credit card (just a common bank account) which makes it a little tricky to transfer money, especially when you are in a hurry and have to change it from € to $ (which costs around 12€ extra)

I think I am not the only one who would love to get this on DVD

I think we have to wait some more. I mean, Jason has a lot of things to do. This new class, the new online school, arranging the tech for the site, probably work for the workshop. Also, he has to sleep, eat and be able to live away from his computer. We will get what he promised. :)

Vaejoun, you could make a PayPal account. I have a normal back account too. PayPal allows you to link your bank account to your PayPal account. It works like a charm. If you want to see it live I'm sorry to inform you PayPal has a confirmation method which takes a few days (they send you two small amounts of money which you need to verify your account with). But you could always tune in for the On Demand right? ;)

ArtZealot, Go to this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=177) forum. You will be asked to enter a password. Do it so and you'll enter the forum. It will be in the post you see there. Make sure you have Java (http://www.java.com) and you'll be able to view it when Jason puts the player in a post in the forum.

edit: please refrain from posting at the thread for Q&A at the beginning of the class, try to use the chat system provided, else it might crash the server and we might have to stay on for more than the 1pm to 5 pm time frame....

edit1: another thing, check spam or junk mail. but i'm guessing credit card payment will take longer than paypal, especially if you're card was not issued inside the states?

edit2: for reference, not sure if it works, but i've call up my credit card company and found out the approval code for the transaction and send it to CA store... but i'm not sure if there's anyone working during the weekend to receive the mail...

Thing I don't understand is that I believe the regular downloads use PayPal and they go through for me within minutes at the most. I press the button, I get my download. And why would it need to verify my payment since the money's already gone from my account?

money deducted from account doesnt mean that the transaction is approved, it simply means that the financial institution/ credit card company has block the requested amount (hence the "deduction" from your account). when the transaction is approved, there will be an approval code generated and only then will the money be on its way to the vendor (CA store). this is for online banking and credit card, not sure how pay pals works...

Actually, that makes sense and answers something I've been wondering for a while. I noticed that the money had been removed from my total but there was nothing my transaction history for the specific withdrawl.

Back from the gym and still Pending?!? Oh No! Guys, we aint gonna make it but I just sent Jason a PM and I mentioned the probs involved more peeps than me - due in main to paying by credit card. Those missing out ought to PM him too so he understands the extent of the problem and so it can be rectified for next time.

I find it amusing and a bit depressing to see how fast this thread is spiraling towards despair.

Those who has passwords say they cant view the stream, "it has been prohibited from viewing by the channel owner" This would be Jason and his team.

Now this might just mean they are working on fixing all of this as we speak.

Coro is bringin' it so gloriously right now with the storyboard comps!

Class is totally worth it already, and we're only like an hour in.

That was awesome. I especially liked how Coro explained the uses of compositional tools in characters, vehicles, and weapons.

Being told to do master copies is one thing but without knowledge of what to look for, that's not really productive in the end other than blind copying. Everything in the lecture just opened my eyes on what to look for in compositions. That will certainly aid me in studying compositions and, eventually, place them into my own works.

Hmm...I was reviewing the on demand videos and it seems like the beginning of the lecture is missing.

I think when it was live, Jason started by talking about rhythm, but in the on demand videos, it starts out with variety...

According to the colour theory thread, that stream has the same problem..

Btw..Thanks Jason and Coro for the awesome class! Very informative!
I'll have to review the videos again and again for it to really sink in.

O yea , and thank you for waiting till everyone had access to the stream before starting the lecture this morning :D

We are still learning the new tools and I thought we had it all right and class time came and I didn't. Zack thankfully got it all working for us. Thanks Zack! To rectify coro and I did about two hours extra of lecture and presentation. It was only supposed to be four hours and ended up closer to six I think.

awesome class, can wait to review all the material again, hope everything works out with livestream so that we can see the full lecture on demand :)

no worries on the initial bugges before the class got started, ive had lecturers in uni who were more inept at plugging in an overhead projector, the fact that i can sit in sweden and take part in a class like this still blows my mind, even when i have to wait a bit longer than advertised :)

Besides, coro drew a monkey, all is forgiven.
